26 miles west of Vidal Junction backed up pretty good. 2 helicopters landed for evacuations.

So sad. People make bad passes in a hurry on that road.

My wife is in between the 10 and Vidal right now. [emoji1418]

My brother almost got run off the road by a guy passing, my brother had no trailer doing the speed limit, with a WaterRod years ago. People make bad decisions......Now that I reside in AZ no more Rice Road although I loved going late at night from LA and puling off the road at the junction from 29 Palms....full moon and dead silence....

So sad. Praying for the best.
Yep, we take ehrenburg. Better drive, plus reckless drivers would get pulled over quite quickly there.

I texted my Brother and Sister In law as they are on Rice Rd. It was a rollover and a bunch of people already helping.

Here’s her reply...

“White suv was upside down people still inside off the side of the road at a turn. Debris, cars, motorcycles & people everywhere. It was a heartbreaker”

I go through Ehrenburg more often than not anymore. If anything, it’s a more relaxing drive. Plus, we usually see tractors and tractors are cool.
Sad deal...every time.

Pro tip on Ehrenburg. Stop at Oscar’s on Lovekin. It’s a little hole in the wall convenience store and meat market. They have some of the best carne asada and pollo I’ve ever had. I make sure to stop every time I’m in the area. Don’t let the looks and cleanliness of the place fool you.

We drive OC to Havasu 10+ times a year and almost always towing. About 8 years ago I was on Rice Road fully loaded heading towards havasu around 10pm on a Thursday when I almost lost everything. I was on total cruise control, everyone else including the dog was asleep, and the road was empty until the perfect storm of a big rig heading towards and a truck with an empty car trailet doing 90+ decided to pass the big rig headding straight at me. I'm not religious but somebody was watching out for me that night because both the big rig and I locked up our brakes and I don't know how but except for the truck with the trailer going into the dirt everyone was okay.
My family and I now take the 40 every time.

My wife and I have been lucky and decided enough luck. We do not use Rice Rd!!!!!

We have come upon 5 horrible wrecks during the day and at night.

You have too many tired people, passing and speeding on that highway. When you add all that in accidents happen. Sad

Agreed. When I was back and forth, moving out here from Ca, I saw a double fatality on 10 in Quartzite. 7am, Suburban full heading back to LA from Texas...passed me rolling about 80, and nodded off. Rumble strip woke him up, just in time to see the tanker he was about to hit off the side of the highway. He tried to steer out of it, but cleaned off the passenger side...front spindle and all. When it touched down, hooked hard right into a vacant lot passed the on ramp. Passenger front and middle were DOA...as I helped get the kids out of the back seats:( 6 years ago, can still tell you what each person was wearing...and worse details.

Have to pay attention to everyone on the road. It may save your life or your family's.

The exact reason why I leave the house at 10pm and roll through that area past midnight. Zero traffic and all the idiots have already crashed.

Be hard to lose a left rear and end up end over end. Seems usually a rear and an overcorrection send people into barrel rolls. Don't know the speed or the roadway well...just glad there's no RDSUX sticker on it...

Rollovers are very common on that soft shoulder road if you dip a tire off the pavement.

If I responded to this I would piss everybody off. This is why I don't travel to the river area on a weekend and take a safer route. Especially on a known busy weekend. I enjoy the parker strip Monday thru thursday and head home on a "more miles less traffic route" To many ego a--holes that think they are impervious to "shit happens to others not me" and feel the need to race home and set a new here to there record without a care to everybody else on the road until they need to be scrapped of the highway. They can live with the deaths for the accident they may have caused or were involved in. OOPPSS I did respond sorry. Now that I have is 1 hour out of your'e life that important????

These poor people woke up this morning just like we did. Probably had coffee, breakfast and had no idea that this awaited them. Who knows, there may have been another vehicle involved, untouched, going the opposite direction? Ehrenberg Highway has wide firm shoulders and rather quick response for first responders. Rice road has neither. What is does have is boats being towed at 80+ and others doing over 100. Memory tells me there have been A-holes on here bragging about doing that. Believe some may even have kids now.

I think you’re luring yourself into a slightly false sense of security. Accidents happen every day and on every highway. Sometimes no matter what you do your numbers up.:(

It may happen any time. BUT it won't be by my stupidity. I have driven 45 years, 35 without any infractions and 12 driving commercially. I hate to say how many times I have rolled up on fatalities and assisted seeing things that I wish weren't etched in my memory for life. If you care to roll the dice and take the circumstances, let it rip, but NEVER involve innocent people. Mark

Wasn’t trying to start anything with you, just stating the facts. I’ve been driving a truck for 30 years and have seen plenty.

Staying alert and aware is your best asset. Got to foresee or recognize a situation brewing miles ahead.
See plenty of distracted drivers, those are the vehicles to avoid.

I couldn't make sense of it, but i needed to keep going to get out of the way ,which i did... Best to all of you Good Samaritans on scene.

I think the general feeling is this: Shit can and will happen. Do your best to not be there when it does. Be it the route taken, the time traveled...or just flat out being on your toes.

Is that SUV missing the rear tire or is it just the angle of that pic? If so, it’s possible that they blew a rear tire & that’s how they veered off of the road because there doesn’t appear to be any major front-end damage w/ another vehicle.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Other vehicle had front end damage. My neighbor thinks this SUV was passing hit other vehicle and rolled of road. Other car had front end damage. Beginning of the season.

It’s the calfornee fast lane! ... I’ve rolled rice rd for over 14 years now and only seen one car drive off the road (fell asleep) in all that time. Slow down to 70 and pay the fk attention! —— about the only time I read this shit are long weekends, events, and holidays! o_O

I so hate reading of these Rice Road tragedies on RDP :( Of course for the obvious reason of death, suffering and loss.
Mostly however and I agree selfishly, because there's those who can not resist using it as an opportunity to advertise alternative route "E".
I know it's a natural tendency to reach out to our fellow man, even if it's to save them from themselves. We feel we must do something.
Like church folks ringing your doorbell to hand you a salvation pamphlet, you understand their motivation, despite being irritated they've bothered you.

Well, I gotta be honest here, each time I read one of these sad "Rice Road" threads and the humanitarian outpouring inviting others to join us on the wonderful route "E",
I'm forced to ponder ---- WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING ????:eek::eek:

Are you just lonely on your drives ?
The serenity of it all bores you ?
You want to spice it up by dogging head on collisions ?

We left these ass-clowns on Rice Road and found a route less traveled, why do some of you insist on fucking that up ? To what end ?
Oh I know, you might save a life, it's a humanitarian thing, you can't help yourself ---- but consider this, you might have also just killed somebody :eek: :(

I drive 50 miles of 2 lane rolling hills before I get to the highway. Dodge wildlife, and the occasional lane changer. Hit I40, and it's balls to the walls, average speed of traffic is 80. I don't know if it's the rush everyone is in on the Ca side, or the boredom. If more people take Erehenburg, does it change the risk? The people that are worried about every last minute probably won't change their minds based on safety. Mapquest and Google will still say that Rice is the best path, so people will still take it.

I don't think its a concern that the Rice people will go the E route, very few will come (like the church pamphlets) ….. this is a way of life for them, rice rd is part of the river …. their parents and grandparents came that way and that's just the way it is!!

Guys, I'm not really busting anybody's balls over their spreading the word, I realize it's human nature to do exactly that.
We all do it, doesn't matter if it's some amazing remote valley, hidden oasis, special fishing hole, or the path least taken, we're apparently wired to spread the news.
Funny how folks will move to some remote place in Idaho or Montana, made special to a large extent due to the lack of people and can't wait to immediately share it with everybody they know

As you probably recall, we too have our special place in some mountain off a well worn historical highway made famous in stories and song. :)
Human nature urges me to share it with stories and pictures while common sense screams at me "NO, don't do it, or THEY will come"

YES, I absolutely feel the more it's advertised, the more cars, the risk increases, logic dictates it, it's a numbers game.
In the 10 years we've been using "Plan E" as an alternative, there's already far more vehicular traffic than in years past, it's an unavoidable consequence of many factors.

You'd better run 75-80 mph on AZ I-40, or you'll tear your suspension off in the slow lane, or the big rigs will mow you down in the fast --- going with the flow works best !!

We rolled Rice Rd in the 70's, then again for 15 years beginning in the 90's, finally after witnessing the carnage of a series of accidents, we'd had enough.
I've suggested it a few times since, mid-week, broad daylight, just for a change, wife sez no fuckin way.

By nature I'm a contrarian, the more I can avoid the masses, the happier I am. Unfortunately in the past, that lifestyle conflicted with my/our ability to make a good living.
Now that I'm retired and my wife will soon join me, we're more free to escape the masses, that's always been the plan.

But Wait --- not so fast, while we've been waiting for this moment, we've aged ---- and fuck me, who knew, that as we age, the odds of requiring more specialized medical care can seriously screw up even the most well thought out plans. Seems really bright medical specialists, don't tend to live and work on remote mountains :eek: :(

All of this rice road be. I’ll still drive that road so no worries here. Pay attn and have respect for the road!

IMO it’s not the road that kills, it’s the drivers that kill themselves call it natural selection. If someone was killed by someone else. I still blame the drivers as not driving defensively.

Harsh my mellow
