Automatic Emergency Braking on all cars by 2029

Well, all new cars and trucks will need auto emergency braking by 2029. As of today, I think this tech is not something I want on my car. Maybe in 5 years, it gets refined.

I just paid to get out of a 6-month-old lease of a 2023 Denali because of the rear emergency braking system. We couldn't back out of our garage without it slamming on the brakes. Just way too many alarms and safety nets nowadays... You can manually turn it off, but it resets each ignition cycle. Fuckin huge annoyance. Happy wife happy life so we wrote a check to drop that fucker back off at the dealer. Should have kept the 2021.

I dunno, older cars are more and more appealing. I dont need the engine to shut off at every stop, I dont need it to vibrate my ass cheeks if I cross over the centerline, I dont need it to ring any alarm.

Hey RD, did you unplug the seat belt alarm in your truck? lol

You don’t like this crap by the manufacturers? Shoot the lawyers that drive this change. The manufacturer’s would gladly not spend money to develop and install this crap if they didn’t have to.

Not to mention every single thing added drives up the cost of the vehicles as the manufacture tries to get their R&D costs back.

It’s a vicious cycle and why none of us can have nice things.

Not to mention every single thing added drives up the cost of the vehicles as the manufacture tries to get their R&D costs back.

My wife’s 23 Denali has it. Super annoying.

One of the boat trailers has a wiring fault. It won’t back up it thinks I’m going to hit a trailer. After the 3-4 time it breaks backing up the trailer the car shuts off.

Its amazing to me we have gone backwards in reliability on cars and trucks today. Manufacturers need to "feature" a vehicle to death (literally) to appeal to the common buyer. Add that to the EPA regulations on emissions driving manufacturers to design exotic unreliable mechanism to improve fuel economy and we are left with turds that are reliable to say 80-100k miles. Pathetic.

All this tech in these new cars and the cars to come is crazy.
All I think about is how fucked we will be when the warranty runs out.
Big reason I keep my 02 silverado instead of spending the money on a new computer controlled nightmare.

This is exactly why we bought new car this year we wanted to wait until my wife retired but we have 3 vehicles and my truck sits. Only use the truck now to pull the boat very happy.
I can't take credit it was my wife's idea she is up on all the new laws and technology.

That will probably come out in the trucking industry first since the drivers don’t seem to want to stop for the bathroom these days.

I was told GM engines that shut off at stop lights came about due to an agreement between GM and the Feds. GM was allowed to install their 6.2L engines in some vehicles if some of their other engines shut off when stopped. Apparently, some sort of emissions trade off deal? Any truth to that?

Can't you code out any features you don't want? I'm not familiar with American cars, but on BMWs I can get a cheap bluetooth coder on my phone and adjust everything... Including whether the seat belt chime comes on or not, and under what conditions. Also a million other things like how far down the mirror tilts when reversing etc.

Is this something only Germans build into to the cars, or can it be done on most any car?

I'm a Honda/Acura fan and I've got to say .... I won't buy another one of these vehicles without this automatic emergency braking. It is totally un noticeable until you fuck up .. and if you do screw the pouch you get a warning and if you don't do something next to instantly the binders come on.

Having said this - I've got a Buick SUV rented this week and you guys are 100% right - I can't figure this out - let alone trust it.

This is why I will keep all my old junk. These new cars are going to be worthless when the warranty is over because nobody will be able to fix them or afford to fix them if they find someone with the knowledge.

Every time I back out of a certain parking lot, the automatic rear braking goes off in my 22 Silverado. I have no idea why. Scared the crap out of me the first time. I actually got out thinking I did hit something it was so jarring.

I don't like most of these new systems and especially the auto shut off feature, but durability shouldn't be a problem. Most manufacturers claim 300,000 cycles, so 50 times daily, times 6 days a week, works out to around 20 years. I have that feature and try to turn it off after starting, but if I didn't, I'm sure it would probably only activate less than 20 times a day.

The good thing about Fords is that you can download a spreadsheet that has all these adjustable settings through a program called Forscan - I shut off the doo doo doo when I start up my truck, shut off the double horn honk that happens when you get out of the truck when it's running, shut off the seatbelt alarms, I changed the turn signal to flash 6 times instead of the factory set of 3 when I partially hit the turn signal stalk, I added the coolant temperature numbers over the temp gauge, and shut off the doo doo doo when I open the door when the truck is running. Too bad other manufacturers don't have something like this so the consumer can customize their vehicles to their liking.

They don't, my buddy at Ford says they last roughly 40k miles, the Amazon vans last about 15k.

Dang, I didn't know this. I drove an f150 for 6 years and hated when it would honk when you got out.

I've only driven one vehicle with what was called, "collision avaoidance". It was a late model Freightliner Cascadia. Sounds like a great idea,keeps you from rolling into someone...I can see some good aspects to it. Problem is, whenever someone cuts you off, it tries to stop. Sucked balls in traffic or on hills.

The thing is the EPA regulations actually no longer improve fuel economy, they actually reduce it. They reduced arbitrary emissions components and trade one type of emissions for another at the cost of fuel economy.

The manufacturers also gladly hopped on board here because they reduce the lifespan and endurance of the vehicle necessitating a more frequent replacement, hence higher sales.

My '18 Raptor has the adaptive cruise control. When it's working at it's best, it's like riding with a 15yo with a learners permit. When it gets cranky, it does impromptu fun stuff like ---- When passing a certain shaped tanker styled big rig at 75-80mph, not another car within a mile in front of you, as you get about mid-ships it freaks the fuck out, suddenly decelerating and about standing the truck on it's nose.
Thankfully the three times it's done this while traveling I10 to Havasu, there's been nobody close behind us.
Trust me, that will wake you the hell right on up 🤯 😱 Then make you really pissed off 🤬🤬🤬🤬

I was at VisionKS (automotive tech training conference) a few years ago and sat down with a trainer from GM to discuss all the new technology and why....and he said the same thing. If the technology is available in higher line cars, and someone in a lower end budget model without that technology gets in a wreck and gets injured or dead, they sue the car manufacturer who clearly had the technology to possibly prevent the injury or death and the manufacturer always loses....so basically....fine, fuck you mr. consumer who might sue us....you get it all whether you want it or not and yer gonna pay for it. We both shook our heads and continued chatting about how much we enjoyed our early 2000s pickups.

My 2023 GMC truck has this, and I hate it. But, there is an option in the software to change it to a warning only. That works just fine for me.

Wife has it on her EV6. You can turn it off.
It’s save a dog and a bobcats life so she rolls with it.

Wife’s VW has the on/off, with the defeat shut off right next to the start/stop. So, your finger slides across both on startup.

Personally, I have almost no confidence in most drivers on the road. I see twisted up wrecked car every time I leave the house and I don't commute to work. I am good with any technology that improves my families chances of returning home everyday.

I drove a new car recently with both lane assist and emergency braking. I never experienced the feeling of emergency braking because I am "that guy" who leaves space between me and the car in front of me. I blame my driving habits on 30 years of public utility mandatory defensive driving training every 2 years under the "Smith driving system". I also back into parking spaces based on "attack backing system".

I remember my father complaining about fuel injection, air bags and anti lock brakes. These are all technologies I would not drive without in 2024.

My 22 Kenworth has stability control. No way to turn it off. When I roll around a corner or curly cue on/off ramp my trailer leans pretty good (50,000lb of material with high center of gravity), when the stability control doesnt like what I’m doing….IT SLAMS ON THE BRAKES!!

Well if you know anything about momentum, it makes things very spicy very fast.

I’m rebuilding my 09 pete and selling this thing. Can’t stand some of the new crap tech

I have a '24 F-150 for work. Its has the autobraking. The first thing I did was turn that down to the lowest setting. I still locked up on me once when I was rolling into an intersection to turn left and there was nobody else around.

I find the collision avoidance with the flashing lights and f*cking Beeping blasting at a 100DB because the POS thinks I'm going to ass-end the car that's already making a right turn --- I will NOT buy one that slams on the brakes, NO F-ING way --- I'm out.

Exactly why I won’t use let alone buy full self driving for the Tesla.
We got a month of free FSD as a promotion. I tried it like 3 times. Clunky, slow as fuck, seemed a little confused at times. For some reason though the Tesla fan bois can’t rant and rave enough about it.
I like most of the fancy schmatcy things new vehicles offer but there is a lot of value to my 02 pre nanny Silverado that I’ll never give up.

yep replacement tail lights on my truck are $2,000 since they have radar. Keeps insurance rate up too. $200 light is now 10X

It's not like that, my 2021 has it, it alerts me from time to time but it has never slammed on the brakes. My wife had it slam on the brakes picking my daughter up from school. My daughter was standing there waiting for my wife to pull up and stop but the truck thought she was going to hit her so it stopped the truck 6 feet before reaching her.

Now the reverse braking was an absolute nightmare, I almost couldn't get out of an end spot at Costco. I got home and researched how to turn it off and it's now off.

My '18 Raptor has the cross traffic alert, and forward collision warning only. The forward collision warning pre-arms the brakes for faster response but doesn't actually brake. The frustrating pain in the ass is trying to get Ford to fix it despite having an extended warranty.
I've complained about the 3 incidents of "Phantom" braking on adaptive cruise, but there's no way in hell they can duplicate it, not sure I even could it's so random. They've got a TSB for my years, but not for Raptors. Anyway, I either just run it in normal cruise, or if using adaptive for a extended trip, I'll just disengage it when I start to pass any type of tanker style big rig, regular enclosed trucks haven't been a problem.

I do see where you can shut-off the active forward and reverse braking, but does it stay off, or reset to auto with each new start ??
