For those of you who are under the impression that the term "Atmospheric River" is a creation of the media, you're wrong. I realize this doesn't defend their frequent exaggeration of it's intensity.
It was originally coined by weather researchers in the early 90's to describe a long thin line of water vapor moving through the upper atmosphere.
In our case, this Atmospheric River originates in the tropical waters of the South Pacific and if larger, is referred to as the "Pineapple Express".
Here's what is appears like today on Satellite imagery. As it arrives at the low pressure area currently stretching from Santa Barbara to Nor Cal, it's getting pulled in and the water wrung out of it by the Low's cold air mass and the river continues to feed this low as it slowly moves south.
The image clearly shows the river like formation.
