Just registered our 2018 RV and they use MSRP for value to calculate tags. This is nuts. No one pays anything close to MSRP.

Vehicle value taxes are based upon "base MSRP" in Arizona according to state statute. :(

Yep, it is not cheap.

It's a sliding scale if it is used, but based upon the original "base MSRP". They have a calculator on line for it.

Arizona is an expensive state to register vehicles.

Vehicle registrations was about the only thing I really disliked about AZ, that list is growing but hasn't tipped the scales for moving anytime soon. When we first transferred all of our stuff from SD, just our car was what the grand total on everything used to be. I still don't understand why our bumper pull toyhauler trailer cost $600 the first year we owned it. It's a Fk'n trailer.

You’d think with all the DMV fees collected, some of that money could fix the roads . Have any of you driven the 40 between Havasu and Flagstaff ? I just had to have my car inspected and aligned because of a crater sized pot hole .

In 2010 my '10 Harley cost $36 in SD, AZ wanted nearly $400. I waited years before transferring it.

My ‘18 HD cost $112 for permanent plates in Montana....They are never coming off until I part ways with the girl.

Come to think of it my enclosed trailer has Mt permanent tags on it too, I should see what I paid for those.

They’re widening, repairing and building roads all over Phoenix and Tucson, there’s just not enough population up here for anybody to give a shit.

In the last couple of years they have rebuilt several bridges between Havasu and Kingman and they are now rougher than they were before they were rebuilt. Apparently there is no accountability for shoddy workmanship.

I just got home from that stretch and you aren’t joking.

Vehicle license tax is based off msrp whether it new or used.
The only positive is it's personal property tax and can be deducted on your tax form.

The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona.

the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value.

For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, and is registered for two years, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06

Two weeks ago az Dmv took a fee deposit in a stolen Audi from CA. Then sent them to az dps. If course they checked the vin and the rest is history. I bet some dope bought this stolen A8 on a bill of sale, it was a stolen rental car.

Is it a registration fee or personal property tax? I would have been better off registering my boat in CA and paying the pp tax since I’ve owned it 15 years. The out of state AZ registration is much higher at this point.

It is a "value tax" which is the equivalent of a personal property tax.

On post 9 you can see the "registration" was only 8 bucks a year.

Wtf?? You mean you’ve been skirting your unsecured CA property taxes all this time? And you store your boat here in CA part of the time???

So you want to jack up property taxes in CA but you skirt your own property tax obligations on your boat in order to save a buck?

I’m shocked Rodney.

@regor for his thoughts :)

Yes but the value MSRP is a fake number. We are being taxed on a number that is wrong.

Got it.

There is an administrative appeal process for both vehicles and aircraft as we have appealed several aircraft values. The form is on-line.

They use the MSRP no matter what discount you received so if you have the original MSRP from the motorhome with the VIN on it they will change it to that number and then do the number of years discount to arrive at taxable value.

But if you got a big discount off of MSRP, they don't care. The statute says "MSRP".

It is in front of an ALJ. You don't need a lawyer. https://www.azdot.gov/docs/default-source/executive-hearing-office/hearing-request-form.pdf?sfvrsn=2

My experience is that when you send this in, they call you and try to work something out if you have some objective data because otherwise they have to send someone from the AG's office to represent DMV in front of the ALJ. Otherwise, they just let you get crushed by the ALJ and the AG's office. :)

We paid well over $1000 in AZ registration fees last year when our Suburban was new, loaded Premier trim level. New vehicle GM MSRP was jacked up. We paid much less than MSRP, but got nailed by the tax. This year our registration fee was still over $1000. Brutal.

He even posted pictures of the very nice paved and gated spot he built to store the boat at his home in the off season.;)

But if your mom has lived in her house since 1970 and is on a fixed income we need to raise her property taxes to a “fair level”... while Rodney skirts his unsecured property taxes.

Can someone who knows for sure clarify this "discounted for years in the state" or years since first registered?

Say I have a 2010 ram 2500 that's registered in CA and I move to AZ. Do they calculate the 16% discount from the number of years since it was new or years it's been registered in AZ? In this case it would be MSRP x60% - 16% x 9 or would it just be MSRP x 60%, since it would be the first year registered in AZ?

Depending upon which year it was registered in CA, it would be reduced by 8 or 9 years. AZ DMV has a database of base MSRP for your truck and would probably calculate it off of that number. You can also try this.

https://azvltcalculator.com

Explanation from AZ DMV website:

"The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60 percent of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25 percent for each year since the vehicle was first registered (15 percent before Aug. 1, 1998). Then, as of the Dec. 1, 2000, reduction, the rate is calculated for each $100 of the assessed value as $2.80 for new vehicles and $2.89 for used vehicles. For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, the first-year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06. For a mobile home, the title fee is $7 per section or unit. No other mobile home fees are payable to MVD."

Link:

https://www.azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/VehicleServices/Title/overview

The reason they use the number of years registered, is that some car collectors get a dealer license in AZ and have all their cars on dealer plates and never register them so that when they are "first sold for retail purposes" even if they are 5 or 10 years old, the state wants its vig.

You’re catching on.

Are you truly that much of a POS Rod?

Fuck everyone else while you do what you want? How do you even rationalize that kind of behavior??

If I was going to go around calling the rest of the world out, i would absolutely walk my own talk.

You? You seem to be the Worst kind of scum on this planet.

So tell the class....

How do you rationalize yourself? Inquiring minds want to know.

DMV wouldn’t say anything. It’s the treasurer - tax collector of Orange County that would enforce it. DMV just forwards the information on the registration that you fill out where the boat is physically stored.

Your selective righteousness is an interesting path. I don't justify or rationalize anything because I don't need to. I don't call people out or call anyone names, because I don't need to do that either (ok, maybe a few times in the P&G section).

I talk about policy because that is an area where have a fair amount of experience. If you don't like my take on things, fine. If you need to call me names, I'm good with that too.

If you think I'm the only one who has registered their boat in AZ and their trailer in CA, then you have missed a few threads. If there is anything else you would like clarification on, feel free to ask. I'll answer if it's appropriate.

Nice side step to my question.

I like your answer though...

Its ok if I do it, cause other kids do it.

Lame.

How about you answer the Real question and explain your behavior?

Explain how you justify expecting some people to pay more in taxes, while you sit there and cheat on yours?

The class is waiting...
