Authorities apparently used tracking to locate the suspect in the Idaho murders. I know that is likely if a cell phone is in the vehicle or On Star equipped.

Question, can vehicles be tracked without On Star or a cell phone on board especially older OBD2 vehicles that do not advertise bi-directional capabilities?

In other words, can law enforcement ping a vehicle?

Am guessing yes.

Older cars no, mostly linked to electronics installed over the last seven or eight years some low line models do not have this. Lpr scanners are another outstanding source, a lot of technology, most of which I just don’t care to share in public, but the feds have access to all of it.

They used "tracking" or they had an idea of the vehicle type and color they were interested in and used cameras and LPR data to narrow it down more to the specific vehicle the suspect drove?
Dude must've been absent on the day they covered "Don't drive your personal vehicle to and from a murder scene." during his Criminal Justice studies.

Flew back from Mexico and facial recognition ID's me at immigration before I even showed my passport.
Beyond license plate scanners everywhere, I would not be surprised if they have working facial recognition through a windshield now, or in near future.
States are all linked now, big brother is for sure watching.

Ever been in a Walmart and seen the cameras at eye level walking out? Pretty sure that info is available to some people. All the cameras at busy intersections can be used to place a time and direction a vehicle was headed...

Funny that it's harder to get away with crimes, but they seem to be less worried about convictions or prison. Maybe it's just about control, not crime.

Are they? Probably not. Can they be? Depends on what you considered "tracked". You personally? Same. Usually they need a warrant or probable cause to specifically track a specific car, phone, device, etc. I believe. (I am not a lawyer). LPR (license plate readers) are real. GPS tracked? It depends on if the vehicle has a "connection" or not. Most rental cars whether lower models or higher end models usually have company installed GPS trackers. Some times used car dealers will have GPS trackers.

This has become pretty common in AZ with "Buy Here, Pay Here" types of lots. They also install "immobilizers". Had a friend buy a truck at auction that had one...cheap, wouldn't run. That was the first time I'd seen one. A few months ago I had a contractor type call me out to take a look at a "no start". I isolated the problem, and then asked him if he had the title or was making payments. When he said payments, I told him there wasn't anything I could do. I honestly don't know legally what could happen, but I preferred not to find out...it's still "their car". He was ok with that response, but I haven't seen the truck on the road either.

I think it is common in the US for sure. To bad no one reads the contract. Me included. 😂

That is one way they use to ID who is driving and its occupants in a car / truck when you pass thru the border checks

like highway 8 @ buckman springs west bound, they have cameras 1/2 mile before the actual check station. They know who you are before you actually arrive!

Nope... no way... Just A ConSPiraCy! 😁

You would be surprised how many vehicles out there have tracking ability. Let alone those who may have purchased a vehicle with a pre paid low jack system that can still work... or at least that is what I've read on the in the internet in a few places.

I hate to break it to you, but if you have a phone in your pocket you "can" be tracked a million times more accurate than your car.😂

I hear you. Funny to me at what some people freak out over when in reality "if" the government really wanted to track a person, the only ones that have any chance of staying completely hidden use payphones, pay cash, and don't own a house of a car. With technology today, you can pretty much track whoever you want if they are using their real name... which I would assume most RDP'ers are.

I’d give a years salary to the person that shot that worthless fuck in the temple at first opportunity. I give zero fucks about how they found this fucking pile of worthless skin, I’d like to see him dead!

Sincerely, a guy who’s closer to the case than most.

Used to be you could buy a license plate cover that would obscure your plate information from being read unless the read were directly behind you. Very good for red light cameras and toll lanes.

Had to call 911 one time. Lady knew my wife’s name already and exact location. Kinda crazy. I don’t knock it but kinda wild.

Idk what you all are worried about. With half the shit posted on this site over the last 2-3 years we’re all on a list lol

The problem with all this stuff isn't necessarily how it's used to find a shitbag like this guy, it's another 10 years down the line when the tax departments are given access to the data and they start sending you a bill because your car that was registered in another state spent 3 days over the threshold in their state, etc, etc, etc.

People laugh it off, but that is what will end up happening eventually.

I figure I was on at least a couple lists before I even found RDP...
This just may have made the "Trifecta" or so.
My guess is every citizen is already categorized or rated in some way. The trick is, being able to "go dark", and only have a "last known location".

That is, if something bad were to happen, or need to be done;)

I will always keep my 2005 Dodge around. Ditch your cell phone, grab a stack of cash and drive away untracked. Only trail left behind are chunks of Dodge plastic from the interior as it slowly self-destructs.

I think in the coming months there may be a "Fury Road" build coming...46" military tires, a small block and an old Ford with some scrap iron armor...maybe a turret?

My moms neighbors son stole a car. He was driving down the road, at night. Car coming from the other direction and when they were close the car he stole shut off. The car coming from the other direction was a sheriffs deputy. This was in the late 1990's and on-star is how they shut the car off, and locked the doors so he could not get out and run. Can only imagine what they can do now.

Hit the emergency alert on your cell phone I did it one day on accident and cops showed up at my house within 5 mins or less
Forget if it was niece or nephew that dialed 911 0r whatever got their attention. They called me back and told me a deputy would be there shortly. Whatever. Both of them got to talk to a deputy and learn about dialing 911. If I remember right, hold the 9 button on yore phone and it will dial 911 4 u.

Back in 1970 when NASA was still using slide rules, I was still in Hungary, planning my escape route to the free world. Reported my two weeks vacation the the upper management, going to go to a Lake Balaton resort area. Managed to cross to Yugoslavia with a short term visiting visa by train unnoticed [ no computers to trace movements ] . Jumped the border from Yugo to Italy.
When I didn't show up at work, cops showed up at our apartment, talking to my mom and asked where my motorcycle was. My brother and my best friend took my bike to a secret place and parted it out over the years.
The lesson from this is, you don't own anything in a commie/socialist country, they can seize anything at will, My brother couldn't keep that bike for himself. Everything, cars, even painting or real estate property was considered a national treasury.
My buddy saved one tank emblem and kept it as a memento of our friendship. He just sent the emblem to me after all those years two years ago. I loved that bike and would love to have one again. Very rare model, German bike, 1952 Horex 350 four stroke. First bike over 250cc Germany was allowed to manufacture after WWII.
The emblem, made in brass and porcelain paint.

Goes back to around 1982, Had a plexiglass cover for the front plate on my Vette. Got a ticket for it. Only couple yrs after, we had cameras everywhere to capture your plate for speeding. It lasted for a long time before they took them off. Now, they installed them again at intersections with high accident rates. The limeys in England started the camera surveillance craze long time ago.
