I usually ride, and quite often walk my dogs in the desert on the north side of town. I get so tired of looking at all the dump sites that people have been too cheap to take to the landfill. I was considering making a huge dent in the trash issue by maybe renting a skip loader from tri state. It would allow me to smooth out the routes to the main trash heaps for a truck and trailer, and also load said shit into the trailer. Here is an example;
IMG_7233.jpeg

Most of these big piles are pretty close to the desert access points and would be easy to retrieve with equipment. Our lovely landfill here does not accept tires, which is probably why this sweet collection exists.. They will accept them in kingman for $44/ton. There is also a burnt out Subaru frame, an old jet ski shell, and several other random piles of trash or construction debris. I feel like if we had a few extra people, someone to drive the truck and trailer, a large chain to allow us to either pull out the car, then wrap and lift it onto a trailer.

Id love to come up with a plan to get as many of these trash heaps picked up as we can. I’m not trying to limit this effort to the north side, but I just have several piles that would be easy access there in mind. As of now, I’m guessing a budget for this undertaking would be about $1,000- $1,400/day depending on dump fees.

Skip loader rental from tri state is $325/day plus tax and fuel

It should make it pretty easy to make access to the piles with trucks and trailer.

I have a dump trailer in Seattle, but not here, so that’s another $125/ day. Said trailer also needs to make at least one trip to kingman with tires so that’s more fuel and time. I’m thinking we would also need a flatbed to haul out the old car frame. And who knows what else.

We also need food and beverage for anyone willing to donate a little labor.

I’m typically an optimist and like to think I have most the bases covered. I’m also not offended if anyone points out why I’m an idiot. Maybe the brain trust can let me know what I’m missing or why my plan will be harder than expected.

Would anyone be willing to volunteer? I’d probably be willing to cover the costs if I can get people to help. I’m off work and in town for most of February, so I’d really like to make this happen.

Anyone else interested? Or know of other said junk piles we should target ?

I think you could skip the expense of the skip loader by just bringing high clearance 4x4 trucks to (most) of these dump sites. Thats how most of this shit got there to begin with. If you come up with a date let us know. I'd be willing to provide some labor to the effort.

A few phone calls and you might get the city, county or state land trust to kick in. At least let you dump for free or maybe a couple dumpsters. Perhaps a discount at Tristate with some web publicity.
I got the state land trust to help us out below the dam.

If you could schedule this out a bit, and build up some more interest, I'd bet a LOT of folks would be willing to pitch in. Depending on when this happens, we might be able to make it too.

Good job on you for even contemplating a project like this. 👍

Going over our schedule now. Whatever weekend you pick the trailer is available. On the slight chance I can’t make it I’m more than happy to have someone tow it out there. That would include chains, bindings etc.

You may run into a problem finding a home for the tires. I’d check ahead of time where they can be discarded.

I thought the landfill took tires and just charged a fee
Lake Havasu has an annual hazardous waste clean up and I've dropped tires off there for free
Not sure if they would do a big tire clean up

I'll send $100 for fuel and expenses if this comes together. It's hard to believe how people have decided it's OK to throw shit out the window or dump it. I routinely pick up a trash bag or two of stuff from the ditch along our county road frontage.

It kills me to see the desert desecrated by trash, and even moreso by fucking turbines and solar panels. Fuck the politicians and assholes that support the destruction of our most vulnerable ecosystem. "Oh, it's just empty desert." Fuck you.

Just a heads up. Someone get authorization from BLM etc. to do this. One of my snowbird customers got a group together and cleaned up a dump area between Quartsite and Parker about ten years ago. Received a knock on the door a week later, and got a citation for improving the desert. ( No shit ) After hiring an attorney and court appearances, the fine was reduced from $ 10,000 to $ 1,000. This still pisses me off every time I think about it.

I’m down to drive out and help. I have a flatbed that can be towed by a jeep to pile up trash bags on.

I have a contact at the BLM I can see if we can get clearance too.

Someone should call the city for sponsors of trash bags, waters, ect

Lol Im glad someone is paying attention.

Republic would be particular about our dumpsters at Moonridge. However, we brought in a large roll off twice a year for residents and we could put anything in those dumpsters ……. tires, water heaters, all kinds of crap and they were good with it.

Damn! I love to see the interest in this. Luckily I’m here in havasu full time and off work until the end of February so I can handle all these logistics.
@Riverbottom thats great advice. I’ll reach out to them and if I don’t get the info I’m looking for I may reach out to @Bpracing1127 and see if your contact can help us.

I’ll dig into the calendar and put some options for dates out there and maybe we can see what gets the most availability from volunteers.

Good point. I can offer our front yard if we can have a 40 yard dumpster dropped. We’re at Jamaica and Bermuda.

I'm in if the date works. With a bit of promotion, these things tend to attract like-minded people who will lend a hand. Let me know if you want help with the BLM if they ask you to file an SRP. It would be ideal if you could get waste management to bring you some roll-offs. When we did these in Reno, they brought as many as we could fill.

Get one of the tire shops in town to help out with disposal

So I just got off the phone with BLM. I talked to the field manager and he asked me to send him a write up and pictures of some of the dump sites I had in mind. He said he would send a ranger out and even help coordinate getting dump fees covered or dumpsters. We have a little more coordination to do, but they are on board. Sounds like the guys who get tickets are building roads with heavy equipment and just use the excuse of cleaning the desert. If we coordinate ahead of time we can mitigate that.

Maybe get a roll away dumpster dropped off close by. Then stage relays.

If you’re going to make this an annual event, get BLM involved. Maybe they can steer you in the right direction, and find some funds to help out….aka plow the roads before the event.

We rolled up to the "Cocktails" bar on the main drag, that bar on the hill with the plywood Locomotive in front.
Sitting at the bar 4 guys came in for lunch. They were part-time laborers and were working on a desert cleanup project grant. They said as fast as they clean areas up people dump more junk.

Spending a couple of hours dropping pins on a map before the event will allow volunteers to efficiently go to problem areas and make the effort more effective. The dumpster can be the rally spot with coolers and snacks.

This is really a good idea.
