I read an interesting article about this a while back. Years ago, this was normal for politicians. They could exaggerate and tell whoppers all they wanted. In small settings, meeting with people in restaurants, the Elks Club, donors' homes, etc, it was common to tell stories about your life to make you seem like a regular guy, a genuine person.
