I learned boating and skiing with Dad II. (Father in law, before he was my FIL).... I was a just a HORNY kid (15) wanting to get into his daughter's pants (she 13 at the time).... that's how I got into the Roofing Industry with Dad II..... he was a smart MAN.... he knew want I wanted.... he out smarter me and put me to work.... now he didn't need to worry about his Daughter during the day...LOL (PS, i just banged her tonight with everything I had, 45 years later, still waiting that FINE PIECE OF ASS!!).... as years went by, I tagged along on every Vacation (before and after we were married..LOL)..... my Old man worked on the Alaskan pipeline for 10 years (during these early years 1977-1980)... so my Mom decided to start hanging out with POPS II and MOM II..... also... she invited herself along on the vacations also (now that I think about it...my family and I were F-ing MOCHERES..LOL).... now during a two week Lake Powell trip in 79..... (AWESOME VACATIONS!!!! Thanks Mom/Dad II and M/D 1)..... were enjoined the day near Gunsight Buite. I was 20.... my Mom 1, was talking about how my Sister tried to ski (doubles) with her friends. But could never get up...( I got Sis up later in life, we were HOOKED "Boating" ever since)..... my Mom 1, was 47 at the time..... she was NOT COORDINATED, could not walk and chew gum at the same time.... her Sport was drinking, Coffee. Wine and smoking. So I start telling Mom 1, come on...we can get you up on double skis..... were on Powell.... during the week.... maybe see 3 boats all day..... the water is 87 degrees, just GLASS at 2pm.... Mom 1, I'll get in the water with ya...Dad II will get you up... easy, no problem..... off we go.... she gets her vest snapped after 5 minutes.... (her weight 150...5'2" , shape ROUND)... off in the water I go...about 20' off shore.... Mom 1, in the water bobbing like a fishing bobber... (my thought, WTF was I thinking!!!). .... i give Mom 1, pointers, knees bent, arms straight, let boat PULL you up.... lean back a little..... ok Mom 1, ya ready... YEP... say magic words...she says... HIT IT.... she got her ass out of the water and fell to the right..... (better than I expected).... I swam out to her about 50'.... "Good job Mom" did ya feel it...you were actually up... ya wanna get in the boat???? nope let's DO THIS!!, take two.... up and then down on her ASS.... I swam another 50' out to her..... ok Mom GOOD JOB... you actually can do yhis... if you wanna quit.... NOPE IM OUT HERE. I'm doing it.... take 3.... ok Mom, knees bent, arms straight, let boat pull you up...etc.... up, up, up down..... SHIT!!! Thought she had it.... I swim out about 100 feet.... our Boat pulls around 4th time.... they look at me.... here you might need this life vest...shit I was was way offshore..(not too smart..lol)..
Mom say ok last time...(4th time)..I'm now bobbing in the middle of the lake...still no boats around..... ok Mom, knees bent, arms straight etc.... Hit IT!!!! UP, UP, UP...there she goes, knees bent, arm straight out Hunched over.....I'm SCREAMING STAND UP, STAND UP!!!! nope she was pulled around hunched over...... It was a PROUD moment... and her last time skiing.... but she did get UP!!!
RIP...Mom 1 & 2, Dad 1 & 2...LOVE YA!!! THANKS FOR THE LIFE LESSONS!!!!
Me and my Honey always sharing their lessons...

Ok, reading the above, and the brief bit about roofing... Dad was a roofer, hell, could have beat my ass until the day he died...and I was roofing too. I was just thinking that stuff changes, kids now would never do the things I did at 12-13. My dad took me to work with him then. Chopping kegs with an axe, humpin' rolls of modified up ladders, learned how to drive a forklift...in the late 80's. Learned to work to pay for things I thought I needed. I miss my parents, but I'm damn glad they were tough on me. Older I get, the smarter they were...

My sister taught me how to drive, well sort of.....if you count making me steer my moms Falcon on a sharp curve, two lane road with a cliff on one one side! That was Wheeler Ave in La Verne around 1973-74. Her best friends lived just below Mountain Springs. Made many trips hauling ass down that road !! It’s amazing we survived!

From my early childhood till Uncle Sam drafted my ass, we spent all our summers at Lake Arrowhead, not ballers (Although later we did get a nice place with a dock over on the North Shore) we were part of the Lakeside Trailer Park crew in Blue Jay Bay.
Most of us park kids learned to ski just after learning to walk, at least I did.
Anyway, one particular fond memory was all us trailer park kids and a few adults teaching other kids how to ski, not behind a boat, but being towed by a conga line all hauling on a rope and running up the beach. We'd set a large SUP (That's right, in the 50's we had paddle boards !!, big heavy plywood ones with drain plugs). Anyway, we'd give the kid his dry lesson on the beach, knees bent, arms straight and we'd give him or her a few tugs to give them the feel.
Then set the kid on the board, skis out in front, handles in hands, then when we'd "Hit It", all us kids all holding the ski rope would run like hell up the beach and pull him or her across the bay. I bet over a couple of summers we taught well over a dozen kids how to get up on doubles. I had an 8mm of this fun, but alas it burned up in the fire, along with the 8mm of my dad teaching Johnny Carson how to ski behind a beautiful 19' Racing Chris Craft and the 1950's Catalina and Lake Mead ski races --- breaks my heart. :(

Terrorizing the neighborhood foothills on your YZ 80, getting caught by the cops, and walking home only to be checked on again by the cop to see if the pipe was "hot" to make sure you weren't still riding it. Then there were the days where my dad would stop traffic so I could jump over the highway on my YZ80

I grew up in a small town and if you screwed up and was witnessed by a neighbor or even a stranger it was acceptable for them to smack you. I remember ONCE telling my dad a neighbor hit me for something I did and after fessing up he blasted me twice as hard. Anybody ever throw snowballs at cars or egg houses ? Stuff us 11 year olds use to do which in retrospect was worth a beating. On the flip side I never hit my boys who are now in their early 20's and turned out pretty good.

My Dad had a paddle over the fridge. Thick ass oh shit the motor died in the middle of the lake paddle. It only took once and then all he had to do was point at it and I straightened right up. I will give my kids a swift swat to the ass if they deserve it but its rare.

That's exactly how ALL us kids and cousins learned how to ski only it was at Kinders Camp on the river.

My grandmother did that too. There was a willow tree in the front yard, and it made deadly switches.

If you picked one that was too thick, she'd beat the hell outta me with it. If it was too small, that long willow became a weapon that could draw blood. Either way, it was gonna hurt.

Of course grandmother loved us all. She left us when I was nine, she was just fifty years old. Way too soon.

My grandmother dished out pain of a different sort --- washing, constant washing and scrubbing until your skin would begin to peel away  Staying with her was a never ending cycle of washing, pre-washing, then post-washing and there was almost nothing I could do at her house to even get dirty in the first place :(

Going to Sears as a kid and the smell of popcorn as soon as you opened the door.
Going to McDonald's and getting root beer from the barrels behind the counter.
Listening to the guys sing at Shakey's Pizza on the piano and banjo then when they were done you could listen to the player piano.
Going to a miniature golf course then after a round of golf riding the giant slide.
Going on the gas car ride at Knott's Berry Farm in the parking lot that was not on a track.
Getting a Scooter Pie (like a moon pie) in my lunch when I was in elementary school.
Getting the Sears Christmas catalogue in the mail.

I will never forget the ride home in a state patrol car in 74, guy wrote a ticket a half page long and was about 8 feet tall. Braced myself for a good beatin and my dad just said l wondered when you'd get caught. Court took my bike for 30 days.

When I was a teen in the 80's a bunch of us bought Enduros, Honda XL600's, Kawasaki KLR600 etc. We had many many wheelie battles...

Up hills, around turns, and the favorite, when we were all riding together, getting on the freeway and seeing who could keep it up the longest....

That sound the front tire makes when it hits the ground at 70MPH is such a part of my memories.

We had it down to a science, went MILES doing it, till someone went over, slowed everyone down when we saw the road rash from tip to tale all along his ass/back etc.

It ate his boots and clothes off of him.

I shudder when I see people riding scooters and bikes in shorts and flip flops...that first lesson is going to be a really rough one.

The Wish Book was the best. Dogeared pages making all the good stuff, practically memorizing it after flipping through so many times. I still want the red XKE pedal car.

We painted our homes with lead based paint. Kids didn't eat it and it lasted like 20 fucking years with one coat.
