I remember you guys skiing in the drainage ditches behind Benny Abruzzo's old Bronco...

LOL! We used my Land Cruiser too, until I sold it and got a different ride. The kite belonged to Benny's dad. We found it in the basement crawl space of their house, it had never been used. I don't think Ben knew we took it until later. :D

Once we all started hang gliding a couple of years later, we rigged an Electra Flyer Cirrus III for lake use. It had a quick release on the bottom of the control bar that was operated with a bicycle handlebar brake setup. We set up on the beach, had about fifty feet of slack rope laid out in front of the kite, and when the boat started pulling we ran with the hang glider. When the rope went tight, it was pretty easy to control. Just put the nose up and climbed out. On a good day we could release the tow, catch some thermals, and fly around for 30-45 minutes.

When we skied in the irrigation ditch, Louis was such a good athlete he could do a beach, errr, ditch start on a slalom ski. The hard part was getting the ski up and turning before the angle of the rope pulled you into the opposite bank.

Those were fun days.

Ok, have to post this...listening to Pirate Radio while eating Carmen's (Azusa)? Anyone else?...Damn I had a good healthy childhood!
Pirate radio, yes great station and movie.

Who listened to Love Line on KROQ with Poorman and Dr. Drew. I remember 1 question from a girl "why does it sting when I get cum in my eye" I was at a buddies house eating a late nite Deltaco run and spit it out laughing.

Listened to Love Line on night shift, but by that time Adam Corolla had taken over the mike with Dr. Drew. Good entertainment...

Carmen's, El Patio and La Tolteca were all the bomb. Of the three, only La Tolteca still exists and has pretty good food.

Back in the 50's, my Mom couldn't afford to buy me a new roller scooter, so me and my buddy built our own, using wood for the frames, got used ball bearings we got from auto repair shops. Loved the sound of dry bearings, rolling down on quiet streets:D. Those were the days my friends.;):)

I remember all music on Sunday nights used to stop at 9:00pm on FM then became public forums until 6:00am. If you listened to Dr. Demnto it was another 2 hours until that station went to public forum.

Skate board???
An Adjustable metal wheel shoe skate split apart and nailed to a 2 x 4. Figured out a 2 x 6 was better. But who had one those (2 x 6) laying Around? Made my first real skate board in wood shop in 7th grade.
Mahogany and Ash. Convinced Mom and Dad to pop for a set of ‘Roller Derby’ trucks. Big controversy in our neighborhood which was better. Roller
Derby or Chicago.. Almost a Ford / Chevy thing. Pretty sure the Roller Derby were cheaper....
They would point out the double rubber trucks vs the single rubber trucks for the Roller Derby. At 13 didn’t really understand the function of the double rubber trucks. But I did point out the Chicago wheels were harder, would spin out easier and the smallest pebble would stop them straight up. The Roller Derby were a little softer and would absorb the little pebbles. This is way before polyurethane wheels. I started walking the family dog behind the skateboard. A big Dalmatian. Wasn’t long before he was running pulling me. He kept getting stronger and stronger. I had to be on game dodging the cracks, raised concrete levels, twigs, rocks and hoses pulled over the sidewalk, cars not pulled all the way up, cars backing out.....
One day flying down the sidewalk I felt a presence over my shoulder.
By the way, there was no looking Over shoulder, riding required full attention. So I stopped. How do you do that is careful dismount and tug on the dog to stop. This takes a lot training over time BTW. It’s a Cop in a car pacing me. He’s laughing his ass off and says, I should give you ticket!! Uh, for what? I ask. For speeding. Your going a little over 30 in a 25 MPH zone!!!! Uh, yes sir, am I in trouble?? No carry on. Just be careful and slow it down a little.
You drove away still laughing.
Back to the board. Didn’t take long to discover he benefit of the double rubber trucks. More stability. But the Roller Derby wheels were better because of the Rock thing and making the turn at the end of street, which was usually a controlled slide. Maintenance was a big deal as those wheel bearings were smoking hot at the end of the run. As he got stronger he needed two laps. Well , the first thing started to happen is the races would come loose in the wheel had to stay up on that. And then after awhile, then axles would break. Discovered Titanuim axles. Very cool.. The best there is.... After awhile those would break. I was spending a significant amount of my paper route money on maintaining the board, so the Dog could Go for a walk....
Down at the Slot Car/Skate shop I asked where do we go from here?
No where. That’s the best there is. You’ve outpaced the technology.
This is 1968 BTW!!! way before the Polyurethane technology.

Has to give it up before serious injury came. I do have one broken arm from it. Wasn’t looking forward to any more.
The dog just got too strong.
Started taking Him to the park to run.

Didn’t mean to run so long on the post. But that’s how it was....

I had a mastiff mix mutt growing up. Man that dog could pull. Started a s around the block once, then twice, then 5 times. Dang that dog loved to pull me on my skateboard. Only thing it loved more was cats which is where most of the injuries came from.

one time we are on our first lap after a couple days without running. Dog was excited to be out and was pulling hard. We are about 2/3s of the way down the street and the dog spots a cat. Huge surge in the leash and I almost lose it but bank hard and save it. Then comes the curb i jump off the board just as it hits the curb. Dog feels the tension in the line lessen and makes a dash for the cat. Pulls me straight into a sideways superman. I clear the grass patch, the sidewalk and land on my face in the decorative rocks along the driveway. Dog is still pulling and drags me for another 10 feet or so. My clothes are shredded my face has blood all over it. I look like I got in a fight with Fred kruger. My shoulder is popped out of its socket and my chin is gushing blood. That one required stitches. Next week after the stitches came out we were back at it though.

Laughing myself silly as I read this, propbably because of the first hand experience on what goes wrong.
A Mastiff??? Holy spit. 5 Laps....
My wheels and axles started blowing up after 2.

Anyways, all good times. Brings back the memories...I can still hear the clackety..clack of the expansion joints underneath.

Trying not to burn your legs on the headers.

My dad ran water cooled logs, so for me as a kid that was never a problem. In my 20's running Bassetts I burned my forearms several times (messing with the carbs) because i was too impatient to let the headers cool. You could hear it sizzle and then the pain would follow as you realized you touched the header. lol

We had a small neighborhood store. Back in the 1980's, small stores would sell cigarettes to kids for their parents. We'd buy our candy and cigarettes there and hang out on the beach across the street. Or go to a huge park nearby. We had zero adult supervision, probably how I started smoking at eleven.

Found a picture of the store. Fun times. There is still a store there, but they built a new building a few years ago. Good times except the cigarette smoking part!

Thanks for making it full size...… Note the cigarette ads in the windows. I was there a few years ago visiting friends that live on the same street as the store. There was kids there. But all of them with their parents. I started going to that store by myself in grade one. In grade two we had a child serial killer on the loose. Even with that we still went out to parks by ourselves! Just told not to talk with strangers. The freedom was awesome!

Me and my best friend would leave the house on our bikes, and intentionally try and get lost!

We would just ride till we had no clue where we were, and then tried to find our way home.

Other times, we would take the bus to dodger stadium. We would grab large sodas, and drop a chunk of dry ice, from the ice cream vendors into the soda, just to watch people trip and ask what the neck we were drinking!

After the game, climb down the hill and mess around China Town for awhile. Then go to Alvera Street for more junk food to eat, then take the bus home and pass out.

Grammer school days. Yeah, freedom!

I've been using the skateboard for walks since the 80's. I still do it.
