FFS.....Have red every where except for AVGO and that is a minor holding for me.

Down less than 1% overall but not what I want to see. Seems to have caught up to my portfolio now :(

Thoughts on an ETF other than VOO?

Thinking of starting another account that makes small but regular weekly/monthly investment purchases throughout the year. A set it & let it run type of account that receives whatever regular funds might be leftover.

What are the thoughts on a dividend producing ETF or a few stocks for long term accumulation (5-10yrs)?
I have VUG

The markets will recover the moment the “Tariff Threats” go away…
I expect the turmoil to continue, until then…

Which is why I have $$$ on the sidelines… Trying to pick the best stock/entry points I can get… There are alot of damn good deals in the markets right now…

Now… if the threats on Iran, start becoming Actions… then we could see some short term turmoil…
To be honest… I dont necessarily think the “threats” are baseless… I think one way or the other… Iran is about to have a bad day in the very near future, whether that comes directly from us, or Isreal…

If I am correct about that, how do the markets react… Oil sector will spike short term.. But what will China do? Because they get alot of their oil from Iran… But they are already pissed at us over tariffs.. Maybe the markets drop 400-600points the day of???

Thats my outlook/opinion…
Toss a coin at this point. I’m just gonna grab my ankles and hold on for dear life.

Long Term Investors / 401Ks… this type of turmoil is great, because your buying on a regular basis on the way down and the way back up.. Long Termers time is on your side… 401Ks are buying stocks bi weekly or monthly and dollar cost averaging.. getting some good deals right now…

Swing Traders… have their shopping carts full, waiting to buy… (the $$$ I have on the sides is pretty much set for swing trade).

Short Term Investors… this type of turmoil can be quite painful… especially if your red 15-20%…

Day Traders… are loving life… shorting the markets on a downslide is easy $$$, watching for that reversal is even more $$$.

All about perspective of your strategy…

From what I have gathered… your a long term investor.. time is on your side…

Today’s market looked a little scary…..all Tariff driven.

Good news in Phoenix, home prices continue to go up. 🫢

Only the ballers are buying which causes the median prices to go up. Phoenix has record high inventory and record low sales. Nothing but price cuts by me, especially on new builds.

For ETF's, I have QQQ, DIA, DVY. The latter, has done pretty well with this pull back (makes sense looking at the underlying holdings). Until today. Weird day - many of the 'defensive' stocks got beat down, some tech held strong, while others declined. Retail wasn't good either.

There's several varieties of dividend ETF's. I don't believe any will beat the S&P 500 long term. However, they can be used to diversify.

Is the market running itself up to another sell off this Friday? Computer trades doing their thing?
Question. With all the computer and algorithm trading going on, and their ability to see any moment to make money, are the old days of giant drops gone? None emotional institutional Computer trading? Can the retail market panic enough? Things are different than they were six years ago.
Thoughts?

Another question. Scenario.
I buy ABC for a dollar, one share a month.
After 10 months, it goes to two dollars.
I keep buying my one share.
After 15 months, I decide to sell five shares.
Am I taxed on short term, capital gains, or at the percentage income rate?

Another question, haven't read every post so sorry if its a repost.

What can I use to practice trade? I know there are systems out there where you can have a fake account that tracks real time. Any suggestions?

There’s a ton of them. Apps. Ninja trader, robinhood. Schwab. Just search paper trading. Maybe go where you want to trade so you get familiar with their platform.

Short answer, short-term capital gains (assets held for one year or less) are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, if you are buying for 15 months you will have 3 months that are eligible for long term cap gains tax and you MUST sell your stocks as First in First Out to assure you are selling just the stock bought prior to the 12 months required period. All that said, basically the total amount of stock profits and income made during the year along with when you sell a stock dictates your tax liability for that stock. So much info available online I would do a bunch of research and if unsure ask your CPA or Tax Professional for a final clarification just to be sure you are not screwed at the end of the year. JMO. (Shinto on the boards is a smart cookie you could also ask him for advice he is always a great source of info).

So there is a way to tell when you bought each stock individually purchased even though they’re all the same in the same box. Date code or such. Shintoo has helped me before.

Since there is a way to track it yes......going to have to poke around your past buy/sell history that should be there. If you need help on that you should be able to call whoever you are trading thru.

Personally I have never tried to look up anything like that so its just a guess on my part. Someone else will probably clear it up

When you buy or sell, these become what's known as lots. Each trade will show the lot( shares bought or sold and at what price, and date). It pays to be mindful when short term trading as it can have a serious tax ramification.

Yes, you can go into your trade or transaction history, punch up a specific stock, date range, click bought or sold, usually gives you all the details needed. To do the First bought First sold, or last bought last sold or even highest cost or lowest cost you have to go to your account and check search or even on google they describe almost every trading platform info.

As a side note, I got in to CLF earlier in the week and took it in the shorts on what I though would be a swing trade for the day. Doubled my position on Trumps tariff on steel and aluminum and exited today at 9.60 share for 11% win. Lots of market swings, hope everyone can make a few dollars to offset the long term holding losses in the 401/457.

Think or Swim (TOS) is a good platform for paper trading. You can take trades and track strategies all with fake money.

Trading view is a much better LOOKING platform and interface.. but I’m so dick-deep in TOS that it’s what I use to take my trades. Sometimes I’ll chart things out over on TV however.

When your viewing your holdings, look to the sides of your stock ticker symbol to see if there is some form of a drop down menu available. Possibly an arrow symbol, or some lines stacked on top of another. Click on that & look for something that says: Lot Details, Tax Lot Details, View Positions, etc. That should provide you with a listing of purchase dates & amounts.

I'm waiting for TSLA to get back to $220 lol

more market shed today... wonder what tomorrow will bring
I’ve been nibbling and picking adding to some existing positions, but my cash reserves are getting down to the point where I’m gonna have to stop this shit.🤣

Keeping enough cash on hand to pay myself is a pain in the ass🤣

I see no reason to buy anything, but treasuries, and gold. Even if we don’t hit “recession”. the slow down will be tough to reverse.

I still think the “AI world” is where the economy fines growth. They’re startup companies using AI to analyze old data sets from past research projects, to fine hidden results.

Why move your 401k to a safe spot after the drop?

If you are retired this should have happened long ago.

I may or may not have a former coworker who chose to retire and left a majority of his portfolio in the company stock. Now he is super mad he portfolio took a massive shit.

Was it restricted stock he was locked into or did he just not have forethought to diversify? 🙁

He listens to stupid people and thought the easy 5% dividend was great. It is until there is a large “event”

Speaking of poor advice. I know of someone who has a pension and a 401k.

There financial adviser told them to focus on paying off their RV that is 100k loan and they use it 4-5 times a year and to not buy life insurance and just keep the 401k as a life insurance “fund”.

I told them to sell that damn RV and rent when they need to.

And to pull a couple grand from the 401k every month and spends $200 of it on a life insurance policy.

But hey whatever

I use it as one of my benchmark comparisons. It pretty consistently matches or beats the S&P 500. 😎

I read this somewhere on the internet yesterday about losing money in the stock market and thought it was hilarious

"Losing half your money in the stock market is worse than losing half in a divorce because you can lose half of your portfolio but your wife will still be around." 🤣

I have a big chunk of money sitting in a treasury right now, probably will jump back into market in April. April 2 Trump is supposed to put his final Tarriff plan out to the world. I expect to jump in and get an instant 10-15% discount sometime after that.
