Bobby seems happy they are not there?
The athletes I grew up with wanted only to compete against the highest level opponents. They’d rather finish second than not compete against the best, whatever sport or country.
I was a fair athlete, usually all star team in football, baseball, and especially skiing. Never near the level of these athletes, but pretty good.
My brother was close to being an Olympic caliber downhiller. We grew up racing against Olympic caliber skiers. My brother beat Tommy Moe (before his Olympic gold) once at Alyeska in downhill. That’s like next stratosphere level racing (I’d just watch in amazement).
But none of them would even want to bother racing if the other top guys weren’t there.
I’m pretty sure a lot or most of the Olympic athletes at the games right now want to compete against the best in the world…but yet again politics plays into it.
But that’s how some people operate anyway.
Why beat an opponent when you can just keep them away?
No athlete wants an asterisk next to their achievements.
But to others I guess medal count is all that matters?
