Cheryl at Absolute was just talking to me on Saturday when we were picking up the boat how incredible flathead lake was. I forgot to look it up over the weekend. After seeing your pictures, I want to go even more now.

What an incredible trip you guys are on

Regarding the multi-million dollar homes with a Cobalt in the dock, it's just a different mentality up here. The SoCal lifestyle is just that. People in much of the rest of the nation are not built the same and do not have the same values. Most people around here don't feel the need to go 80 -100+ mph in a boat. In fact, they don't like those boats and complain about how loud they are. They live here or come up to their third vacation home for peace and relaxation. They want to pull the kids or grandkids around on a tube or wakeboard. Take them fishing. The boats (and houses) are often used by multiple generations. So if granddad owns the house, his kids and nieces and nephews (and their friends) may use it for a week or two here and there, and he may come up for a couple of weeks. Is he going to leave his $200-$500K boat for all of his family members to use? Hell no. But he will leave a Cobalt, SeaRay, or 115 HP pontoon.

Plus, you can only use the lake for six weeks out of the year; why make the investment? :)

Yeah, it’s the same way on Lake Tahoe; multi-multi million dollar homes and cobalts galore!

Thank you 👍
You obviously understand how some places are meant to be savored by being immersed in it's all it's natural beauty, wonderous sights and sounds that makes it such a special place.
It's eventual unfortunate demise will be at the hands of those who will stand in awe of it's untouched beauty, yet feel no guilt while polluting it with their selfish desires while filling their pockets with the almighty dollar. 😢

I think the inexpensive boat is just that, an accessory to the lake house with low operational costs, insurance and no concerns if it gets dock rash. There is so much stuff to do up here that does not require a premium version of the toy. My CanAm is way overkill up here, but average in LHC.

Dave and I were chatting last night about the boat topic, we figured he could screw this place up pretty fast with little effort. LOL :)

We're all participants in the story of the "Late Great Planet Earth", although I prefer pointing at and blaming others. 🤭

It's an interesting exercise in perception too. I was raised on Chaparral deck boats my whole life, and my parents have always drooled over Cobalts.
It wasn't all that many years ago (OK, well 30 or so doesn't feel as long as it sounds 🤣) when Cobalts were "Da Kine" many of us were in awe of.

Some of these houses are crazy money!! Weirdly not real nice boats? Just single engine toons, wakeboard boats..

Place can be summed up in pontoons and Volvo drives.. lol. Bizarre to me because you’d think with this kinda money floating around even if they were small boats you’d think they want something nice?
Is that a tram from the dock to the house? If so, damn.

So like every person that built a massive house on the lake? Or we just talking boats? Or…. lol

Should everyone be on mountain bikes or is a SXS ok? Or do we only get judgy when the SXS are fast and long travelled..

My point is no matter your perspective on the matter there’s someone further down the spectrum saying the same thing about you.

My comments about the boats weren’t just meaning they had to be big fast loud performance boats.. I’m just saying it’s weird seeing a 5+ million dollar house with a 30k pontoon boat sitting in front of it..

I just kinda figured there would be nicer or newer of the same boats with the amount of wealth on display.

The Indian hieroglyphs were incredible and right at the waters edge! You could literally step off the boat and touch them if you wanted too. (Please don’t). Just making a point of how close you can get to them after all this time.

If you look closely you can see buffalo, weird crescent moon shapes, spears, and a series of “l”. I’m guessing maybe keeping count of the buffalo each season?

Love my 2006 Cobalt. They have gone to crap since Malibu bought them out a few years back.

Not to derail and turn this into a Cobalt thread, but I saw this on facebook the other day. 343 with whippled 525s and arneson drives. Seems like a fun package to cruise around the Mediterranean

I would kind of think you would see wood boats like Riva's etc. Like Tahoe where the boat is a status symbol and the average owner couldn't tell you a damn thing about the boat other than how much it costs. It's kind of refreshing to see that's not the case up there.

So what do you think the locals would think of me in my 19' Daytona? :p

There are a bunch of wood boats over here in the CDA area, not sure about Flathead as we haven't spent any time over there. Some owners are like you described, no clue other than the $'s, others are the exact opposite and know every bit.

@RiverDave - let me know when you're in the CDA area. Can't provide the bushplane tour/experience like you just had, but can give you ideas on some places to hit.

Owning an island is the ultimate baller move. I imagine for most of these folks this is a vacation home? Do they leave a boat slipped at a local marina that they use to get to their house when they get into town?

How far north can you take the Flathead river?

Got to experience the wood boat show on Tahoe. Like you said the owners who loved their boats were so fun to talk with. One guy had a few too many drinks and was trying to get me to drive his boat during the parade. Spent an hour with him on the dock and in the boat talking about it. As much as I wanted to I had the family with me and couldn't ditch them.

I believe I covered that sufficiently in post # 307.
Some folks will enjoy it more one way, others another, doesn't matter what I think, I'm not going to have any homes there.
We sold our Havasu place this year after 29 years because we enjoyed it as it was, but increasingly less as it became more popular and crowded.
We left plenty of footprints, noise and boat wakes during our time, we're certainly not declaring any innocence.

I’m not much of a pessimist, I guess. I’m not convinced of the inevitable demise. Humans screw up a lot of places, certainly, but we also clean up, renew, and protect many places. I think most people appreciate the beauty and simpleness of nature. Even the people who purchase the 5-acre ranchettes (like me) do it because they want to be closer to nature. Yes, the developer cut it all up into parcels, but the purchasers plant trees, irrigate, and plant native plant species while trying to remove the noxious, invasive weeds. Is the beauty destroyed? It depends on one’s perspective. Anyway, I don’t see our beautiful lake being destroyed any time soon. Potential snow and ice for 8-9 months keeps most of the riff-raff away 😜 Plus, half of it is controlled by the tribe. Not much happens at the south end without their approval.

Back to the boats, I am surprised, though, that there aren’t more large Grady-white or Scout-type Center console fishing boats around.

" It depends on one’s perspective." That sums it up perfectly.
If I had a boat on that lake it would have the ability to protect me from the elements better than any center console type boat or pontoon, at least if I wanted to enjoy a longer boating period.
Perhaps the infrastructure isn't yet capable of supporting larger boats ? I don't know, never been there but after viewing Dave's pictures I'm considering a trip up to the Bitter Root valley by Hamilton to visit my wife's Sister and hubby.
In your opinion when is it to late in the season to consider such a trip for an old weather-spoiled -- pussy San Diegan. 😁

It could snow in October. Hell, it COULD snow any month of the year, but highly unlikely. Nearly everyone who lives north of the 45th parallel has an "I remember when it snowed on the 4th of July" story. It's usually nice until the middle of October. Nights are very cool, but days are still mostly warm. You won't be wearing shorts and flip-flops, but you won't be wearing a parka and beanie either. There will be snow in the mountains, but not the valleys. The Bitterroot is one of the more moderate regions of Montana.

- Cobalts are solid boats...my stepdad had a 20ft'r that we fished all over the ocean..Long Beach, Newport, Huntington Flats, etc...there were days we launched and motored out in the fog, and when the fog burned off, couldnt see shore in any direction...I dont think he did any maintenance on that thing and it just kept going....

- Also, I dont believe @RiverDave when he says that his dog is an asshole....not one pic that he has posted has me convinced of that...thats a good looking rescue dog!

Shhhhhh. The Bitterroot Valley is harsh and unforgiving. Just ask Lewis & Clark.

His Dog is pretty chill and well behaved. He threatened to leave it with us, I would have taken it in a heartbeat, I think his daughter might have wanted to stay behind if the dog stayed. Good sized dog also.
It should be noted that the person saying how mild the weather is.... Spends the winter in Lake Havasu. 🤣🤣🤣

j/k Angie....
For the record, I'm pretty sure Angie would be happy to stay all year in Montana, I'm the one that has to leave Montana in the winter, but it is not the cold that is the issue, it is the lack of sunlight. Our compromise is that I get to spend time offroading in Arizona half the year, since Montana does not have notable offroading to the degree I enjoy.

I think the most mild spot in Montana weather wise is Plains Montana. AKA Wild Horse Plains. That is the spot the Natives used to winter the horses.

July is about the safest month for a tourist visit, but also the most busy. Smoke season seems to have started yesterday, so Aug & Sept you run the risk of wildfires and a lot of smoke. I think October is the finest month no matter where you are in the US. Nov-Dec at our place is cold, but not miserable. However everything is dormant and brown. Jan-Feb is dead of winter. March is not spring. April it starts to get nicer, but don't make plans without cold weather gear. May-June is rain, but can fool you with some really nice weather during the week, but somehow the weekends will rain.

Our joke is we have eight good weekends and we get pissed if hey get wasted. The good news is the summer days are long.

Seems like every time I headed that direction was July-August and the fires and smoke would cancel going into Glacier and so forth. It went on for years like that

So to pick up where we left off, we went to Jeff and Angie’s for dinner!! What an awesome spot with an amazing view!!

I was sitting there bs’ing with Keff and he said “it’s about deer-thirty” and almost as if it was on cue a few minutes later the fields were sprinkled with deer out eating.

The enchiladas were awesome, the beers were cold, sunset was epic. 5 stars - highly recommend!!

If you use code “rdp” you will get 10% off your stay.. lol

Seriously though, we appreciate the hospitality Jeff and Angie!! I wish I woulda known you were that close when we planned the trip!

Always enjoy our conversations, and I always learn something new with each one.

On the way home and the. Later that night at the hangar Paul and Scott came by.. Scott is @War Canoe on rdp.. for those that don’t know he was the reason I put on the Parker Enduro for a few years awhile back.

Great guy that lives up in the Delta. Another buddy Steve is coming in today, but we are getting ready to leave so we will miss him by a few hours.

We are going to be in sand point tomorrow and will be driving around exploring for two or three days. :). For sure post up some places to hit!

We have used quite a bit of the information posted by the inmates on previous Rv trips and this one as well!

Those beautiful homes with Cobalts and pontoon boats seem like a good fit. To do otherwise would be somewhat like running a flat bottom on June Lake in the CA Sierras. Could be done . . But there’s a time and place for everything. Thanks again for sharing your outstanding family vacation.
