This has been a several year project so far, but thought I would start a thread with some photo's and current status. The project is a 1979 20' Schiada that my mom and dad ski raced in the early 80's. I learned to ski behind this boat, and have many memories of mom skiing, dad driving and working on motors - it something that I look back on with fondness. 2 years back, I convinced my dad that his Schiada needed a new power plant and needed to get the hardward freshened. It has been the family ski boat since getting out of ski racing. So we stripped everything down, got the hull over to John Miller for some fiberglass repair and strengthening work, and a BBC 509 off to John Lembeck for an engine build. While this was going on, dad had passed, which there had been many other things that took priority (like helping my mom), so the 20' project sat for the past year plus, not making much progress. So in the past month, making some progress. All my aluminum rigging is off to the polishers, then off to the anodizers. Should have that back next month. The motor is in the process of going on the dyno. And today I spent the day on the underneath side of the boat waxing the bottom. The hull is 30 years old, and the brown calcification on the hull had built up. So I took some rubbing compound with lots of elbo grease...and I have essentailly a brand new hull. I'm really stoked. Photos are attached, and I'll continue to post as progress is made, but I'm looking very forward to having her back out on the ski racing circuit this next season. May even be a chance that my mom might come back out too... she had Bemis make her up some new bindings on her old Murdock race ski. I'm looking very forward to next season. Enjoy the photos - Sean

That is a Great story and the boat looks awesome. These old boats with family memories are the best ones to play with, you have an emotional bond with this thing and hopefully it will again create some great memories.

Hey Sean, how you been. First off sorry to hear of your dads passing. What ever happened to your 21RC you were having Carson dyno your motor last I heard did you ever get the boat back together. Your Dad & Mom's 20' looks like a very nice ride and thats very cool that you are going to finish it and create some new memories and super cool that your mom may get back to ski racing......or at least she could drive the 20 and pull you for practice :D. Good luck with the rebuild and thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'll have more photos as updates occur. The current schedule is all together by February, so on water testing can occur in April, since season will start shortly after that.

Sawtooth - on the 21' - I'll start another thread for her. Lots of work has been taking place on her. I found some structural issues with the hull that I was out of my league to fix structural wise. The hull has been in at Islander Marine for the past 3 months. I'll be stopping by this next week to see the progress, but do have photos to send that Rick from Islander has been sending me to show me status. And the power plant - that is in at Carson's getting built up. All scheduled to be together for next season. All a work in progress that takes time. Sean

Talked to John Lambeck this last week - the motor for the 20' just got off the dyno. Nothing too fancy. A naturally aspirated 509 BBC with a tunnel ram on her - dual carburators, and cast iron heads. I hired John to build her up and dyno the engine - came in around 565 hp. John was pretty happy with the way she ran. I'll be running her on av gas.

So here's the question - what gears should I be running in the v-drive with a 2 blad prop (which I'll be buying a new prop - so I'll take some recommendations there too on pitch - the old one my dad had on there is full of cavitations burns). Currently, there are 18's in the v-drive - which worked well with the stock LS-6 that we were running for play skiing. (assuming a 350 hp engine). In looking up on the shelf this past weekend, I found some 22's - but thinking 26's may be more in order. I recall dad mentioning 32's when he ran the blown motor, but assuming that had close to 900 hp with 10 lbs of boost. Thoughts, feedback, considerations?

Just need to get aluminum parts out from the polishers and off to annodizing. Then can start rigging. Before I know it, April will be here.

You might want to ask "spudwig" He had a 20 with about that hp. He ran a three blade, but you could at least get the specs he ran. It was a great boat, used mainly for cruising and for play skiing. Top speed was about 80, but it was heavy, full floor boards, back seat, engine cover, bimini and moved the driver seat forward to get more room in the back seat.

If you are interested in the seating, I know he has tons of pics he could show you if you want some ideas how other 20's are set up.

He sold it to buy his 24, but we still talk about the fun we had with it.

Looks good Sean. Do you know the RPM the motor made the most HP? You'll want to gear it to run at that RPM at WOP. I'm thinking you should start with the 22's to see were you run. I think you will need a little more gear but a tunnel ram motor usually need to spin to make good power.
Prop wise I'd start with the one you have. If it handles well you can send it to Bergeron to have it duplicated.

How big is your prop?

I always had forced induction in my 20, but you could talk to Troy and Jason Hooker about what they were running in it after they bought it and built an engine, perhaps around the same power.

18's or 20's in the v-drive should be just fine. We had a mildly built 500 incher with the same setup you have. Tunnel Ram with dual carbs only we had cnc ported edelbrock heads. We were around 600+ hp on pump gas. We took the prop off that Barry had on with his twin turbo engine and put a smaler one on. not that much smaller because we put 18's in the v drive instead of the taller gears barry had for the twin turbo setup. If I can remember right we ran mid 80's with the boat. Ill hit up my brother and see if he remembers what size prop we ran.

Thanks guys for the input - I'll try running the 22's I have sitting in my cube here and see where that gets me.

3 blade on a 20'? Little afraid of that. Dad tried running a 3 blade after the family got out of ski racing - boat did turn so well. Boat always handled well with the two blade that dad ran. And the boat turned on a dime - out turns my 21' for sure.

Hey Ryan - yes - small world. We'll need to meet up on the lake or river. This upcoming season - the ski race season will be busy and I'll be all over the state - so look forward to meeting up. Cheers! Sean

Here are some updated photos of what's been going on with the 20'. John Doherty has been helping me, along with the rigging the 21'. Don't recommend trying to rebuild 2 boats at the same time. Finish one, then start the next one - not enough time when working full time + and training for ski racing and triathlons. However, she is making progress with the newly anodized components. Still a bit of rigging left, though I do have the motor that I need to drop in her.

Here are some photos:

Correction. You had the motor. At this current moment, I have the motor.

That's pretty funny Jason - Thank you for storing the motor for me in the mean time. I'll make it up to you in that you'll get to drive while dragging me around the delta and ClearLake.

Thanks Bob - I'll have more photos as we move along in getting things together.

Special thanks to John Doherty and Jason Miller for the help with the fork lift and dropping the motor in the hull. Just had the v-drive freshened up and put her in as well. Things are coming along, though still more rigging to do...making progress.

Hi All,
Been a bunch going on with life, but wante to post the current stage of the 20'. We're getting close to firing her. While priming the oil, had a leak around the oil cooler, so I'm hoping the new oil cooler will come in today from Rex. Once we get her, then install, top off with oil, fuel her up, and fire her. I have extensions for the headers that have turn downs over the transom. Will look sweet when I have installe and running. The boat that I learned to ski behind in kindergarden is looking pretty sharp.

I've been needing to get some photos up. The 20' is up and running and been taking my mom out for some ski rides on Nacimiento when we're not at the ski races. The refresh came out fantastic. Special thanks to John Doherty who helped significantly with the rigging and putting back together. Working on boats is always more fun when your friends are around to help you out. Here's a few photos:

Do you know what degree strut you are running?

Whenever I try to get my friends to come help me out, its like pulling teeth. I just tell them every day I work on my boat and they are not there, is one less trip to the river that they will get invited too :skull

The Baker Street house - I wasn't even in kindergarden at that time. Here's a photo not long after that phase, when Dad and Charlie Squire build the blown motor and put that in her. Think this was around the 1980 time frame for the ski race season.

yes over on baker. we first met your dad when he had the continental for sale and they were buying the 19 schiada. I have always really liked this boat. When i was lucky i would catch a ride in it during warm ups in the morning at the races.
