Just my two cents but you might want to pull the distributor and pre-oil that thing before turning it over with the starter. Could save you having to freshen the motor. If it hooks a bearing from lack of oil you won't be happy. I would like to have one of those old schiada flattys too. When Steve Harper worked with me at Schiada he was looking for the old molds to build a new original Schiada flat. I would have built one too if we ever found molds. That thing looks so nice and well preserved after your elbow grease.

X2. IF it ran when it was put away. 9 times out of 10 it will start and run decent. How good is a different story. It will most likely burn some when you start it but just do a little tune up and run with it. The boat will be fun no matter how fast it is. And trust me, even with a 30 year old motor I'm sure it will surprise you. I've seen some pretty ratty old thrown together motors run like hell, Just be positive!!

Not much of an update. Last week I siphoned the old gas out of the tanks, peeked inside the fill cap with a flashlight and there's crud in there.:(

The tanks are steel(galvanized?) with these sort of pressed wood ends that are fiberglassed into the boat(no photos yet). I was told by a buddy to cut em out and replace them with SS Imco tanks but that isn't in my budget. Plus, I'd probably have to order custom tanks considering that my fill caps were mounted towards the rear which would have standard Imco style tanks running backwards.

Anyone know a magic solution that would allow me to leave my original tanks in, clean em out, and safely continue to use them?

The tanks are just old steel? Are you sure their not stainless already?

I'm wondering if you can just flush them real good a couple times, and your good to go?

Maybe. I hope! Someone just recommended I pour a half can of McKay Parts Dip in each tank and drive around for a while letting it slosh around. I'm willing to try anything if there's a chance at saving the OG tanks. I'd hate to start cutting into the boat.

This would be my 1st Call to Schiada Stan.. What were the tanks made out of? and how do you clean them up? I'm sure he's got an answer for ya. ;)

Awesome find......:bowdown::p

I'm not a super traditional/old school guy but there is no way I would change the gell/graphics on that boat:cool:

Thats a boat you restore for future generations to see:party::party2:

Be careful what you put into the tanks. If they are ss it's no big deal. If they are aluminum and you put the wrong corrosive in it you won't be happy. By the way when we took off Sunday the boat wasn't in your garage. It was empty or I would have stopped in. We will see it soon. We will be our there again august 16th or so.

the tanks are old galvanized steel, i had to pull one out of my 69 cuz it was leaking. the seam is on the bottom and its spot welded. i will be making aluminum ones this winter for my deal. also on the back corner of the boat i have a stress crack on each side from where the tanks are tabbed in. everyone says to just used that tank seal epoxy crap you can order online. the problem with that is you still have to pull the tank to swish it all around.

No updated pics or major news. Yesterday Steve Harper came by, pulled the drive shaft and hand cranked the motor over and it went easy, even with the plugs in.

Decided not to cut out the tanks, I'm going to clean them out the best while still in the boat, replace the fuel filter, run a few in line filters, new fuel pump change the oil and gear lube, battery, rebuild the carb and run it.

The Coyote will be running in no time. :D

Winter is coming but I own a coat.

if you end up having to cut them out, it takes about 5 minutes with a sawzall. put a metal cutting blade in it and make a slice on the forward mount. cut about a inch behind the tank where its tabbed in. then you can slide the tank forward out of the rear mount.
heres a pic of what the tab looks like. they use a piece of wood to go into the flange of the tank

Cut my tanks out tonight. I've been trying to clean/flush/suck out the crud and gum but it's no use while they're in the boat. I sloshed a bunch of Parts Dip/Carb Cleaner around which helped a bit but not enough.

I'm going to try more tomorrow and possibly take the tanks by a radiator shop and see what they might be able to do to clean em out.

Also mounted my drivers seat back so I fit now. :thumbsup

Ryan,

Boats look'n good and seams to be almost ready to get wet again after 23 years of sitting. Im sure you can find 2 stainless or aluminum saddle tanks layin around for $250-$300 for the pair. I might have a lead on a set if you are interested. The fill cap is near the end of the tanks if I remember correctly.

Thanks for lookin' out brother, I'm bringing the tanks home with me tonight. There's a guy in Bellflower with a hot tank who might be able to clean em out like new and do any repairs. I'm going to try and save em. ;)

Trying to keep it original. We'll see though...

Sounds good. The neck on one of my saddle tanks cracked and i need to get it fixed. Would he be able to fix this as well?

Where's the f'n tanks Ryan? :D

RD

Just picked em up the other day, they look way bitchin' too. Brian at KSH does top notch work. :champagne:

I didn't get any photos, but I will. I'm going back in a week or so to glass em in and install my new fittings, hoses and fuel filter.

Gary Hairebedian and Joe(Kyote) came by yesterday to check it out. They gave me some good advice on some questions I had. :thumbsup

By the way, Scummer loaned me his River Rats videos lastnight. First disc on part 2, I saw you kickin' ass in front of Red Rock. ;):thumbsup

A couple weeks ago I drove up to Eugene, Oregon to pick up an 08 trailer for the boat. The old trailer needed too much time and money to bring it back to life and this new trailer was a deal too good to pass up. Even with the roadtrip. :thumbsup

Last night I floated the boat while my buddy backed down the new trailer. The boat fits perfect! Here she is gettin' wet for the first time in nearly 25 years. :D

Ryan,
the trailer looks very good under your boat.

BTW, my tub will be a Nordic getting a balsa floor and maybe some gelcoat, next week, so if you get up that way stop by and talk a look.

Ps. Racey is selling a Mandella without a trailer, maybe the buyer will need your old trailer? :D

Everything is pretty much in place ready to be glassed in. Like the old ones, the wood will be glassed in but this time the tanks will be bolted so they won't be so permanent. I've decided to have a professional handle the fiber glassing so I don't ruin it. They're also going to pretty up the floor blemishes under where the old tanks sat. Should be installed next week. :thumbsup

Here's a couple photos. Please excuse the dust and messy floors.;)

Just tabs welded to the ends of the tanks, pretty standard setup I've noticed.

I pulled the motor on Saturday night and brought it back home with me to work on. As of right now, the plan is to drop the pan and clean out the 24 year old oil that's been sitting. Also add new oil pump and valve springs.

Here's a few photos I snapped.

I can't believ how great the boat looks inside, the interior looks perfect as well. Did the black seats hold up as good as they look in the pictures? This will be one cool survivor and there aren't many people who will have a boat this old all orioginal.
