When you go to a website and look at any product a cookie is placed on your computer. When you go to facebook or almost any website they look for cookies and place ads on what cookie are present on your PC.

You can set up your browser so when you close the browser it deletes all the cookies

Sorry my initial statement was not entirely correct. However there have been articles indicating this is true on Android Devices.

Please see -->

Here’s how to stop Facebook from listening to you on your phone
https://qz.com/697923/heres-how-to-stop-facebook-from-listening-to-you-on-your-phone/

Perhaps this has been proven wrong later?

Kelli Burns, a communications professor at the University of South Florida, told the paper that she believes Facebook listens to all conversations people have while the app is open, to serve more relevant ads to those people by listening to what they’re talking about.

Facebook has been collecting call history and SMS data from Android devices

I don't find this alarming. Android is a 3rd party app. I can totally see them using your info since it is owned by google. (Just Sayen). Another leading source of targeted ad company to earn a profit.

Im going to premise this with I am not a lefty by any shape or form and am a proud trump supporter.......however

Zuckerberg is doing a kick ass job. This guy has brain power that surpasses all of us combined on here. The dude is a genius. I dont see this as being rehearsed at all. How is he going to rehearse questions from 44 different senators? Really? Facebook has access to whatever you allow it to have. What private personal information do you put on facebook? If you do its your problem. What data can facebook collect from you? It collects what you enter into its proprietary system. It collects info you search for IF YOU LET IT. Facebook is an amazing tool that does amazing things. If you do not like it, if you disagree with it, you have a choice. Stop fucking using it. You would be really surprised by going into your facebook settings to see what you do share and what you dont have to share.

I love all yall in here but you guys are sounding like some liberal bitches on this to be honest. Understand what advertisers do and why they do it. Its no different in the digital world.

I agree 100%. Conservative to the core here as well.

an app developer...u know those funny little quizzes on facebook that take you to a different site...well people give that app permission to use all your facebook info plus whatever else you give it permission to do and that app data collector sold all the info to another company.....the problem is that zuckerbergs facebook allows the offsite app developers to exist on his site....they advertise which means facebook gets paid...

I will say though, I would like to hear more from Ted Cruz about the censoring of conservative views on facebook to those of the liberal left. He hit Zuck pretty hard and it sounded like zuck didnt really have an answer. I want to see those numbers!

Smart phones are a bit unsettling in general. I don't think anyone would care or want in on my online info, the thought that at anytime my camera and or speaker could be remotely accessible and recording is unnerving.

I use FB only to communicate with my two grown kids and their immediate family. Hence I have all of four friends. I've shared nothing personal with FB and my account is locked down tighter than a duck's ass --- but what I find a bit interesting is, I only use Internet Explorer to access FB, period. For RDP and other internet access I use google chrome. So I do find it curious when now I'm seeing boating ads on FB (As one example), when I've never used IE to access RDP or look at boats. I didn't realize cookies were shared between different browsers

Ya want to hear something really scary? FB is actually listening to you through your phone. If the app is running in the background it is listening for key words and will start directing ads at you.

To be clear I am saying it is listening to any audio conversations you are having.. lol. It’s crazy

Well that explains all the Ashley Madison and Adult Friend Finder ads coming up on my phone......... :):):)

He just touched on the crux of the REAL issue. Is FB PAID to censor content for groups of users. The answer is yes of course they are. They do it with ads and they also do it with information. It is not the ads so much as the censorship (they call it catering to users desires). But again, all you have to do is sign out, and/or not use the service to no be fed a load of BS or slanted info.

Many people have known or realized this has been going on for years, but some don't. Just put it in big bold letters in the user agreement and be done with it. People can decide to use the service or not.

I watched most of the hearing, I thought Zuckeburg did a great job answering questions. With that said I don't think there was enough questions about Facebook using your microphone and listening to you. It's pretty obvious they do. Don't believe me?....Talk about a random product and notice how you start getting ads for it.

I've never used FB, and will never use it.

I'm pretty sure Congress has more pressing issues than wasting their time on this as well as Zuckerberg's time. Congress was all over the map. Racism in hiring at FB, content sensoring, Trump had more ads on FB than Hillary, selling data (which Zuck stated how many times FB doesn't sell data to 3rd parties, yet they kept wasting time asking the question), it's scary to see Congress is surprised of how FB works, the data that is stored, the data that is data-banked to monetize on, etc. It's also obvious some of these Senators never read the Terms of Services for their own or official (political) accounts. Nearly all Senators and Representatives were reading off a piece of paper and any time they tried to freestyle or Zuck played either "dumb" or "I'm not sure what it is you are specifically asking", they fell on their face. Have these Senators really been living under a rock for the last 10/15/20 years the Internet has evolved? They generally have no clue how advertising works on the internet. I guess they are ok with camera's setup by gov't agencies to record public places, license plate scanners on roadways, not to mention cell phones logging everywhere we go. Frankly, a person has to assume there is no privacy today. Maybe people should quit sharing so much of their personal data with FB and the internet in general.

Zuckerberg's 'Team' sure is going to be busy following-up with all these questions. lol.

these congressmen and senators are dinosaurs, they are getting outclassed. their questions are not objective, they are more statements than questions. This is embarrassing for our leadership.

My family uses FB to stay in touch, so we kinda enjoy sharing pics.
But my FB Bio says "I don't use messenger" LOL I have enough ways for people to get in touch with me.
I think I have over a dozen unreads still. Whatever they can sit there.
I have my privacy settings to friends only on just about everything, and I only friend people I actually know.
