Yes.
When I was very early in my career I got detailed to pick up a inmate at Vacaville to bring him back up the hill for an annual sanity hearing.
It was gonna be about an hour, and a couple of Correctional Officers offered to walk me around and show me the place.
I locked up my guns etc and took a stroll.
We wound up going through some housing unit and I saw this skinny little guy with a Swastika tattoo between his eyes on his lower forehead.
Charlie Manson.
He called the CO's over to his cell to critique some drawing he had done...and looked at me. We made eye contact.
And I saw pure evil for the first time.
"And who are you?"
"Just a deputy picking a guy up to take back to our county"
He smiled..."Take me too will ya?"
"I smiled back..."Eh, you wouldn't like there"
one sick dangerous mofo.

A few years later I handled a call I am still dealing with in my head.. Guy planted a ball peen hammer in his girlfriends' sons head...hammer broke, kid lived.
Bleeding like a stuck pig in the dark he crawled up to a highway and we got the 911 calls.
He lived. The hammer handle was nfg, and it broke when it contacted the victims skull.
I had a fellow officer go to the suspects house and arrest him for attempt 187.
Suspect claimed all a big misunderstanding, but he had those Charlie Manson eyes too.
I spent the next 5 weeks working that case and at every turn, every witness I talked to back 20 years in his history had a story.
I am confident he killed at least 3 women and the son of one of them, and tried to kill 2 more. Confident as in damn sure, as in coulda got an indictment I think.
He was a sick SOB and had a pattern, and I found it, and he knew it.

The bastard never was held accountable misdemeanor battery, no jail time...
I have all my notes from the case, to this day.

Rivermobster and Whiteworks have heard the story in detail...this will be my book if I ever get it together.
The suspect has gone to his just reward now, I have waited for that.
Someday...

While not a direct involvement, but an event that changed a lot of training for LEO’s especially CHP, The Newhall Incident. I was 20 YO crashing on my Dad’s couch in Orange, woken up by banging on the door at 1:00AM, flashlights outside, I crack the door and 12 CHP Officers bust in rough me and cuff me!
Didn’t tell me what was going on, looking for my Father’s roommate, Carl, not here probably shacked up with some bar fly, my old man’s not there either. They ask me if Carl has a 64’ Pontiac, no he owned about a year ago, made the dealer he bought it from take it back. I turn on the radio and here about 4 CHP Officers that have been killed! 30 minutes later I see flashlights gathering outside the door Orange PD, guys I’m going to open the door but CHP just left and I have nothing to do with went down!

Picture of the 64’ Pontiac from a news story.

I was a young kid, 11 or 12, and our babysitter disappeared. Couple of days later they find her body, raped, hands tied behind her back dumped in a pond a couple of miles away. Everyone said it was the leader of the local gang that so happened to live down the other side of my street. He used to tell me to keep doing my sports and not join the gang. Couple of years later he rolls up on some service guys and kills one and ends up doing a long time.

Years later I hear from my little brother that this guys youngest brother took out the middle brother, stabbed him over and over and over. Haven't been back to the hood since I left when I was 18!

Family friend always told the story that he was the officer who found Manson hiding under his porch when they went and got him.

I can tell you a few stories but damn sure not on social media....lol Nope, NADA, NOTHING

Yes, the world is small and getting smaller all the time.

Everyday decisions on taking that left or right and how luck or intuition gets played out. Too many people do not trust their instincts and they seem to dull with age.

I was fascinated reading some of the stories. We all know someone that we go.....REALLY....him or her who would have thought?

Think of all those serial killers that get busted and the neighbor says they were so nice and pleasant and kept to themselves for the most part. Seemed like a good guy. Happens over and over and over.

Trust your instincts.....

No.
Her brothers were into the gang, and she used to call them out on their shit all the time. Rumor on the block was that the lead guy let it be known that she was his. She was a good student, attractive, and trying to make something of herself....trying to get out of the hood. Never made it. It was a sad deal.

Here is a different direction. John Ramsey’s name came up the other day. His summer home is in Charlevoix. Back in the 90’s we ran into his family a lot. After his daughter and wives deaths he ended up at several boat raft ups. Never carried a conversation other than saying hello. I wonder if that one will ever get exposed to who really killed Jonbenet?

Grew up on the southwest side of Vista. Homes on that street now sell for 700-800k+ and from what I hear the hood element is pretty much gone. All of them are in jail, dead, or moved on. But memories are what they are, no reason to ever go back.
