So when we were kids we all sat at a small kitchenette Three Brothers mom and dad.
My brother didn't want to eat something that had bell pepper in it. I don't like bell peppers he says. My dad says your mom worked all day in the kitchen to make you dinner. I worked all day to put food on the table. Starving kids in in Africa. Dying children in China.
So my brother slowly takes a bite, 2,3,4.….
Bllaaaaacchhhh. Projectile vomit all over the table.
My brothers and I freeze and just sort of looks at each other.
Awkward pause, then Mom throws down her food. Gets up and gets a rag and clears the table.
Dinner eating protocol changed that night... Lol

I never understood this. I ask my kids to only take what they want but if they are full I encourage to stop there. I really would prefer them putting food back than over eating. Or eating something you dont like.

We used to try everything to get my kid to eat his greens....he wouldn't touch 'em. One day we were out at the local mexican joint...got a him a quesadilla with rice and beans. He scoffed at the little pile of shredded lettuce next to his beans, and did his best to avoid it....until all of a sudden we (and the table) was covered in pre-chewed quesadilla, rice, and beans...he got one little sliver of lettuce that he didn't see stuck to his beans.

I was raised in the "clean plate club" and still have a problem with cleaning the plate and I believe that type of parenting causes obesity. My kids eat until they are done I never force them to eat more or clean their plate, hopefully they won't battle with weight later in life.

Problem is they don't eat dinner and then its "Dad can I have a protein bar?" an hour later. Drives me insane. But if they don't eat some asshat of a social worker is gonna be knocking on my door so yeah I make them eat at least a few more bites after they proclaim that they are done.

Lets be honest there was no food network or cooking channel when we grew up. We were mostly served shit food out of a can.

The only food I wouldn't eat growing up was Asparagus. My parents grew up poor and couldn't cook for shit when they were in there 20's and we were expected to eat what they served regardless of taste. (Turns out I like grilled fresh asparagus and so does my kid. Amazing what some spices and fresh lemon can do compared to some soggy canned stuff)

I remember sitting for hours at the dinner table in a stale mate with my dad because I wouldn't eat the disgusting canned asparagus. His idea of making it taste better (this was all food) was to add so much salt it disguised the taste...lol

On more than one occasion he basically forced me to eat it and I would throw up my entire dinner on the table. I ended up winning eventually and never ate canned asparagus again.

My son has an incredible palate for a 9.5 y/o we cook quality food and if it's good he will eat it. The only thing my son absolutely won't eat is salad and his second least favorite is hamburgers/hot dogs...lol (no idea what his deal is there;):D)

He loves sushi, calamari, octopus and he had shrimp and grits the other day with friend okra....Only rule is you need to eat until you are full.

This is where I stand. My dad is 58 for 15 years I have been giving him shit for finishing his plate my mom's etc. He isn't obese or anything but I think he is finally figuring it out.

There were a couple of rules at the table growing up.
Whatever was cooked by Mom and served, you had to at least TRY it. One bite minimum.
If you didn't like what was prepared and wouldn't eat it, fine but you're not getting desert.

The other rule was if you took seconds, you finished what you took. We learned pretty quickly that sometimes our eyes were bigger than our stomachs.

My mom grew up on a farm in Kansas, father in semi rural Mississippi.
I have two brothers mom always cooked great meals, no one ever had to coax us to eat, it was more trying to get us to stop.
All three of us skinny as a rail, if your kids are getting fat they're sitting with their phones too much. :D

Well except for that disgusting raisin, carrot and mayonnaise salad...we still ate it though.

My family rule is the same as when I was a kid. This is dinner and the only dinner served. If you don't like it I respect that and you don't have to eat but you will sit respectfully at the table and nothing else will be served. If you are hungry too bad. Breakfast will be served in the morning.

When I was young, I didn’t want to eat something my mom made. They said fine, you get nothing else. I went hungry that night, my stomach churning and growling, and I’ve never refused eating anything since.

...except brussel sprouts, those are nasty.

I hate to blame mom and dad for me being a fat fuck, but the habits learned from them didn’t do me much good. But to be fair, there gone, and I’m the one stuffing my pie hole. But back then (60’s-70’s) mom didn’t know any better, we would have fried chicken maybe 3 times a week, well I’m a kid, what do kids like, the fried skin, so I always got the backs, and always there where mashed potato with tons of butter, some veggie, and always a stack of wonder bread on a saucer. Butter and jelly on that. Mom was 300# so was dad. ( you notice I say was)
Everything evolved around food, Birthday’s holidays, weekdays, lol.
I’ve lost the weight 3 times, 6 years ago I weighed 333, in 1.5 years I got down to 199, I’m swinging back the other way again.
When is that manic pill going to come out that makes you hate food.

yep, that's how it was at our house growing up, and that's the rule now that my wife and I have kids. I basically ate whatever was made when growing up. Mac and Cheese night sucked though. Luckily, our kids are pretty good eaters. Sometimes they stop short when dessert is in the cards and try to pull the I'm full after four bites, however, we'll tell them to keep after it or to eat the veggie or a bit more of the chicken (whatever the healthier items on the plate that night) or they don't get dessert. They'll even eat brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus. We make butternut squash mac and cheese and the kids say "this is sooo good!". Wife and I wink at each other. The kids think it's 100% cheese topping. lol.

Eating soup was always an exercise in concentration. I was always slurping it. Dad would say "STOP slurping your soup!". Mom did the disciplining growing up. But, when Dad said something, you knew he meant business. I slurp on purpose these days (but look around beforehand to make sure Dad didn't show up out of nowhere). lmao.

We had one of those expanding dinner tables. As a kid, I discovered the bottom of the table had a "pocket" like sleeve to accommodate the extra table piece to make it bigger.

Like ColeTRickle, my mom and dad worked hard and dinner was not a priority. So, whenever mom made something disgusting, I rolled it up in a napkin and stuck it in the sleeve under the table.

Worked fine for a couple of years, until that one day when...

Grew up that same way (mostly My Pops influence lecturing about starving kids in China ) , I don't eat seconds anymore and the wife taught me NOT to clean up my plate (leave a bit) Pops used to eat the "flowers off the plate" soaking up meat juice with bread when the "round steak" was gone , I never knew what real grilled meat really tasted like till I moved out at 17 , actually liked the food at boot camp ... for that matter I thought all spaghetti tasted like Catsup ;) , I encouraged my kids (and grandkids ) to try things but never made them set at the table till they did both Kids grew up healthy and all grandkids are doing well , different times different mindset ...

Every thing I was forced too try, I hate. Number 1 is bananas, the smell almost makes me vomit. It's one thing too try it once, but over and over does not make it any better.

Given my extreme allergy too eggs, I am glad forcing me too try things did not last long. Funny thing is I am not a picky eater.

My parents didn't care what I ate or how much. As long as I behaved, there was peace at the dinner table. My dad worked second or third shift or was out of town. Dinner together was a treat. Weekends were Always special.

Like FMO24 said ... we had to eat liver too ... I still remember this plain as day ... I was about 5 and I didnt eat my liver so my parents said I couldnt leave the table until it was all gone ... I gagged on the stuff ... so I came up with an idea ... you know when you cut something in half you end up with 2 smaller pieces ? ... exactly ! So if you cut it again it will get smaller again ... and so on and so on ... my 5 year old brain thought that if I kept cutting the liver in halfs ... hey pretty soon it would be hard to see ... so I end up with a pile of bits of liver now 4 times larger than when I started ... yeah I ate it. What was the deal with that kind of discipline then ... ?

Have y’all looked around? Were nation of fat asses! Heart, vascular disease & diabetes is wiping out the generations raised by the depression generation.

Eat when hungry. It’s not about wasting. It’s about portion control and quality food. We eat meat and fresh vegetables. Seldom carbs.

Sorry for the rant!! Lol!

Eating the processed foods that are prevalent today is way worse health-wise than what mothers made from scratch back when moms were homemakers.
.
I grew up when finishing your plate of food was normal, wasn't an alternative other than not eating at all. My mom was a fantastic cook(even her liver was tasty) and baker, except for fish.........it took me hours to force down a serving of it.
To this day I can't get myself to eat and enjoy fish.o_Oo_O

That’s a bummer about fish. I make a killer smoked salmon and my older daughter loves it. Summer my 10 year old hates broccoli though. Lol! But she will eat Brussel sprouts and just about every other vegetable.

My younger one loves broccoli but hates fish. I make one meal. If she doesn’t want it my wife will make her what I call the kosher meal. Lol!!

Truth.
Moms fish was pan fried, dry and gross..
.
I see what looks tasty on other peoples plates but the moment I smell it, it doesn't look good to me anymore. I truly wish I could overcome my phobia but its one I haven't accomplished.

Growing up in a small town in Tennessee we ate rather healthy as our garden was huge. Mom, Dad and all us kids would help in the garden and with the canning process. My mom cooked some of the best meals that I can remember and we sat at the dinning table for every meal. Unfortunately my Mom got cancer at age 33 and most of the family gatherings for dinner ceased. My older sister (13 at that time) did the best she could along with Aunts, Uncles and other family members to feed us during those times. It was a long 2 1/2 year battle for all...really miss those meals.

Maybe try some Halibut or Swordfish, they are more of a steak type of fish and does not have the strong odor of other species.

I was going to suggest the fish tacos at Baja fish taco. The Ensenada fried fish tacos there are a gate way to fish like what bacon is to red meat. Lol!

I've had fish tacos, has to have a good sauce though. First ones I had(and liked) were at a golf tourney, Jr Seau's restaraunt had a foodcart for us hackers on one of the T boxes...lol.
.
Wife isn't a fish eater either, I think we're both afraid to experiment since the other won't take up the slack and trade plates...LOL:p:D

Shit....with 11 kids in our family you BETTER eat whats on your plate. No if ands or buts. Eat the food or sit there for hours until you do.

My mom made everything scratch, made our clothes, cleaned the house.....and still had time to give us guidance. She had 4 boys in diapers at the same time (cloth diapers). Think about that for a moment.....lol

Eat your food in front of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was growing up my grandparents owned Vogue Marine in Boulder City. During summer Id spend my summer days there. My grandma made lunch everyday for the workers. They were more like dinners. Spaghetti with french bread, steak and baked potatoes. And my grandma made sure i eat everything on my plate. Im still fat and carry this same habit today....
