Next door neighbors are a pretty normal family. 3 generations under one roof. Couple of dogs included. Rocko (a 3+ year old Doberman) has had run of the half acre back yard for his entire life.

Rocko now has discovered digging and destroying flowerbeds. That habit has entitiled him to now live at the end of a 15 foot cable attached to our common fence. Next to the fence is an 8 legged RV cover. Naturally, Rocko doesn't realize that he shouldn't walk around one of the legs and shorten his cable. When this happens, Rocko can no longer reach his water bucket and sometimes results in his inability to get to shade.

Rocko isn't happy and tries to make his owners aware of his un-happiness by barking and barking and barking and BARKING! Between Rocko and the owners, is an RV and a garage so I doubt that the sound even reaches the owner's apparently unsympathetic ears. Unfortunate for me, I hear Rocko and it breaks my fuckin' heart.

I believe it's against the law to chain/cable lock a dog up. May want to go talk with them.

What's the sense in them having a dog if they don't give a shit about the dog.

My Mom is going through this right now with a neighbor. The neighbor called the cops on my Mom because my Mom throws food and water over the fence to the chained up dog.

Cop shows up and tells my Mom that he is going to tell the neighbors the he has instructed my Mom to call the police and animal control every time that the dog is chained up.

Guess what... Dog is no longer chained up lol

This pisses me off, the family doesn't deserve Rocko. Dobermans require a ton of attention, and it sounds like Rocko was bored and started the digging and destroying process. Might be time for Ol CC to adopt Rocko

Do you actually want to know what I would do?

The people don't deserve to have the dog because they obviously don't care about him. Unfortunately the likely alternative is the shelter where most big dogs don't make it out alive. So there is the rub with turning the people into animal control. Yes it is illegal to chain the dog up in Ca and if unable to get water or shade that compounds the issue and AC will likely confiscate the dog. Easy answers - there aren't any. Neighbor likely not receptive to constructive criticism or the dog would not be on a chain in the first place. Maybe a part of the yard for him fenced off without flower beds would be a first step if feasible. But if they're gonna ignore the dog why have it. Find a good home for him and let him go. The shelter will kill him tho, 90% chance statistically. Sad reality.

If one lacks the ability to understand that they are tying the dog up in a manner than can deprive it of food, water and shade, a conversation is probably not gonna help. The tide does not come in when it relates to the shallow end of the gene pool.

I would report them.

As harsh as it sounds, the dog has a some chance of a good life in he gets adopted. If he remains tied up, he has no chance of a good life and will suffer very greatly in the summer.

Seeing Rex One's statistics is what creates the double edged sword. Report it and 90% chance that he gets put down. Say nothing and Rocko lives a shitty life at the end of a cable.

I have thought about trying to adopt him myself but that isn't the answer as I'm out of town for business often and am single so he gets no human element with me gone.

I hate this. There isn't a good answer.

This is more difficult then just reporting it because of the shelter stats. Id talk with the neighbors first and see if that helps. Neighbors continue after the talk, then it should be reported.

My property in Eastern Washington is above a shitty neighborhood on a plateau. I had a dog come up and visit my girls at the time. Bonus he was a Rottweiler. The owners found him and would come get him. They got tired of getting him and chained him at the edge of their orchard. Summer heat is 104 on average there, he couldn't get to his water or food. I got tired after a month of hearing his barking. When I passed him on the way to talk with the owners, he was could see his skeleton skinny. Instead of getting mad at the owners, asked if I could have him, he likes my house better. They said no it was the fathers dog and he was in jail. Back of my head realized they couldn't afford the dog. So I offered a few hundred dollars, still no. I left, went to the bank and withdrew $1k cash. Went back and waived the money in their faces. Sure enough they jumped at taking the money. Best $1K I've ever spent.

Carl, can you at least show them how to use an overhead cable for the anchor? At least he could traverse the length of the RV cover without becoming tangled up... OR, (Mike might know) is there a "Dobbie" rescue anywhere near you?? Sometimes the staff at the shelter knows about people that direct their efforts to a particuolar breed, that would/could be step one... At least you could know in advance that he wouldn't be put down... Other than that, call a few friends from RD's place and tie up the assine owner for a day or two. !!!

But yeah, I'd have to talk to the owners in a way that lets them know I will not sit idlly by and watch their animal be mis treated, and for sure let them know what they're doing is illegal if they seem to be unresponsive to your interest....

My advice would be to re read your sig. It says it all right there. Go next door, give them the business about what's going on. Ask them nicely the correct the issue. From that point on, whatever happens happens but you at least will have tried to do the neighborly thing. I have a dobe and hate to hear that, and I definitely understand how they can be very challenging. Regardless of attention or discipline we give, ours is obsessed with destruction. We buy terra cotta pots because its the only thing she can't break. She rolls them around and tries to drag them. But needless to say, I have 90lbs of pure destruction. I would at least give it the chance of a talk, and from that point you have to do what you have to do. I'm sure they are considering options as well, you never know what they are thinking about what to do about the situation

So, the neighbors have some kinda party yesterday afternoon evening.....maybe 50-60 people kids etc.

Just guessing that one of those guests must have discovered Rocko's current living conditions and perhaps beat the owner about the head and shoulders......I sure hope so....

Today Rocko has been quiet and FREE to roam the yard.

I hope that the owner got the message.....seems that he did...

If it happens again, maybe get in contact with a dog rescue organization and see if they
have any good ideas.

Otherwise well behaved and affectionate dogs with a digging problem can find many
happy homes.

Poor pup. If it happens again I'd just talk with them although in my experience that rarely works.

I had a neighbor that would let his dog out to shit in my front yard. It made me balistic! I got so tired of cleaning dog shit out of my lawn mower. Finally I decided to get a brown paper bag and collect all that shit. I stapled it over with a note on it that read, "Your dog left this in my front yard and I thought you might like it back."

After that I didn't have any more problems.

Its really frustrating to see people keep animals that they neglect. Dogs are pack animals and need to be around other dogs or its human family, not tied to a rope in the back yard.

Some people don't realize that having any pet is like having another kid... The Dog run idea has worked for us in the past ( 3 dogs) Get him a nice long one with a roller and stops on the ends so he cant get tangled. At least then he can run back and forth across the yard ( finding shade, food etc).. Steel cable is best.. Most dogs cant chew thru it ( tho some will!)

Carl, maybe I missed it if you said so but is this going on in Whittier or at your river pad?

If you can talk these people into giving him up I might know a person who can help.
She runs an all animal rescue in the high desert, same place I got my male Doberman from. She's very Doberman savy.
I just sent her a text,waiting for a response.

Bump:)

Carl,I have had contact with her,one mention of a Doberman in need and she's onboard.
Ball's in your court,if you can get them to give him up he will have a great chance for a new home.
If he goes there he will have Doberman playmates and will receive obedience training, making it even easier to place him.
