WTF? Silicone sealant

Spent hours to recaulk and the shit ain't setting up. It's been 2 days.
What a fucking mess it's gonna be to clean this shit up and start over.
Apparently this stuff has an expiration which I've never known or experienced before.
Has this ever happened to you?

Some of the newer formulas can commonly do this. You also need to be careful in the bathroom as to what the newer formulations will adhere to. We just went through this with some patching work in our shower (being remodeled within a year). It took forever to cure and then it shrunk, cracked, and split in many places.

Yep, polyurethane products as well. They expire and don’t really love the heat in the Havasu garage.

Yeah I had that problem in a bathroom. The stuff I used had been on my shelf for a bit. It went in and never set up, wound up being the consistency of snot. Had to take paper towels and clean it all up then reapply a new tube.

my rule of thumb to avoid this. is once the tube is opened, the clock starts ticking and i have 24 hours at most to use it. i also do my best to avoid using it if it has been sitting in my garage or something for too long.

also keep in mind paint wont stick to most silicone

Yep. Once it's been opened, you pretty much have to toss it.

When I was working, and using it every day...

I would squeeze out an inch or so, let it face off, then break it off and use it again. But I'd use a whole tube in a few weeks. If it sits for over a month, just toss it out.

Sadly @Ziggy there is a shelf life to caulking. Most of the time when they age they harden. It does not surprise me that it is still tacky. They have been changing up formulations of products and things are doing weird things.

Be sure to clean up the area so that you a good bond with the new stuff. Also might want to use a top quality brand like Dow 7 series as some of the cheaper chain stores product has an excessive amount of chineeseum that can affect the life span.

But yes, caulk has a shelf life and even worse if stored in an unconditioned space.

Biggest thing is dont buy the cheap stuff or chain store brands like HDX. Use brands like Dap, Dow, GE, ect.

What brand did you use?
Paintable or none?

And yes if you bought it a few years ago it will be junk.

Actually it can but, has to be oil based not latex. And it has to off gas for a few weeks before applying paint. This is just from my experience.

You can extend the life of silicone caulk by storing opened tubes in the freezer. And yes this true. PS, I have my wife’s permission to do this.

All chemicals have a expiration date. Worked on a job about 12 years ago that had sliding glass doors in demountable offices. They were only supported by an overhead trolley system. Each door weighed about 250 pounds. The glass started falling out of the top receiver that was epoxied to the glass just as the building was turned over. After a lot of investigation, the epoxy had expired before use, it was not refrigerated until applied and the curing process was out of spec and one floor of the installation happened during 90 degree temperatures. If you ever run in to Modernus demountable office fronts, try and change the spec. or comply 100% to the installation instructions and comply with every aspect of it.

My mantra has always been....If I said I will fix it, I will. There is no need to remind me every 6 months. I actually have a t shirt with that on it.

In CA you cannot get oil based anything. Even the quart program has been phased out.

No more chasing to different counties to score either. Ziggy has options though living in both CA and Havasu.

i recently had some 1211 i got in 2018 it was still pliable but had a few small clumps.Anyhow i used some on something and it never hardened.Wasnt anything important and applied thick but like said never hardened.

reminds me i need to get some more.Sucks they dont sell a very small tube as i need to seal some jet ski cases soon but for small engines that stuff is the best.
