I believe the 240's with the 525 hit in the low 70's. @BUDMAN has a 255 with the 525, he could shed some light here. But, you don't buy a Hallett to be the fastest.
That's just fine by me. Some of the drag rigs I see out there look gnarly!

Definitely not the fastest, but I’m ok with it. I’ll take the ride, comfort & space the Hallett offers over the others. I did manage to hit 77 this past weekend with perfect conditions. Smooth water, cool weather, 1/2 a tank of fuel, no ice chests & four adults. That’s with the 525, XR drive & 26p prop.

Thats pretty good, my 99 240 with a stock 502 was about 62ish max, down hill, down stream, down wind!!!
Fully loaded mid to upper 50's.

You forgot on the trailer being pulled behind the truck. 🤣 I don’t see those speeds during the summer time. Usually high 60s low 70s depending on the day

I once did 85 then had to slow it down once I noticed the grease coming out of the center cap of the trailer wheels. LOL

Is it possible to get a 240 up into the mid-70's reliably? How would the hull handle that kind of speed?

That's a lot of juice! Which motors put out that kind of horsepower?
As far as Mercury you’re gonna be looking at a

600
700
860

Teague makes an 825 with a one year warranty.

A lot of custom builders could build you that kind of power. Just be aware that you’re going to need a beefier $$$ drive as well.

The Mercury 500efi and 525efi I believe put out a hair over 500hp at the prop

Came across a couple more 240's. Both look really clean! One is a 2003, 496H/O w/ around 200 hours on it. The other is a 2002, 502 w/ around 200 hours.

What is the upper price range for boats like these in great condition?

I'm leaning a little bit toward the 502 because (it sounds better) supposedly it's easier to work on and service... Seems like you can't go wrong with either of these though!

What should I be taking into consideration?

The 496 will run a long time so will the 502. I believe the 502 (is it a MPI?) can built bigger when it comes to that time, but not the 496.

Today I think those boats would be listed for mid to high 50's.

I would take one with the better graphics/colors if everything else checks out........

Don't over look the trailer either....

agree, either will be fine. Choose the better color combo. Good advice on the trailer. pricing, I'd say around 60 for a clean well cared for unit.

You meant to say 45-50k right? Stupid pricing is over. 27's are not even selling for 60k anymore.

50 would be great for a nice boat. I just have not seen any good condition boats in that price range. @yuppie what are the prices of the boats you are eyeballing?

From 35 all the way up to 60 📊

Lowest price had more hours than I'd like and it was a '97, color was OK and probably needs a little motor work.

Top price has around 200 hours, it's a 2002, stock 502 and it looks like it's in really good shape. Next one down is a 2003 with a 496, similar hours, same (great) condition.

I'm shooting for the top two. Leaning towards the 502 slightly.

As they say. "buy once, cry once". Another thing to consider is Merfcruiser Smartcraft compatibility. Its a great system. I believe it started with 2002 Merc models, but I am unsure.

interesting, I always thought the 240-255 bottom was the same.
That’s what I was told by everyone including hallett when I had my 255.
I had the 255 mid cabin, hp500 very light load would see 74 gps with all around Hill prop. normal load, 4-6 people fuel (full tank is over 600lbs) 65.

This post sounds convincing, but I'm no Hallett 'history guru', so it's just another opinion by an RDP poster. I would certainly try to find the nicest 240 with good power. Some brands' models are classics and the 240 is justifiably one of those. The clean one with a 502 sure seems like the choice so far. GLWP

I have a 1990 closed bow just rebuilt the 454 30 over with a single 750. It runs mid 60s with a bravo 1 24p.

Hope You were the one about to pick up the clean 1997 at Parker. View attachment 1183471
I didn’t even get the chance to go see it, it sold so fast. It was right over Christmas too.

Also, there was some complication about the paperwork on this one.

I was set to go look day after Christmas but it was already gone.

The 2002 for $60k was in worse condition than what I was told to expect, so I passed on that one.

I will start to employ more patience now.

The search continues.

Just for some insight so you don't beat yourself up lol
I was looking at purchasing this boat last summer, had the scoop because it was up in Montana and my buddy found it on FB market place.
was goign back and forth with the owner for awhile, super nice guy, until he wasnt.
I wanted paperwork on the motor rebuild, which is still missing till this day per the post and he just couldn't give me a straight answer.
He got all pissed and pretty much told me to fuck off. Hopefully the buyer was aware of this...

Maybe this is the one
Maybe. Still hasn't contacted me.

I've got a line on another 2003 w/ 496HO, looks really good, just need the seller to open up the garage and let me haul it away.

We've got another great day of weather here, can't wait to get on the water. One of these will work out soon, it's just a matter of time now.

I’ll let him post up when he gets a chance. But I do not think it is any of the 240’s in this thread.
I was calling him out. 🤣 Correct on none of them listed here on this thread.

Got it! 2003 Hallett 240 w/ a 496HO and Bravo 1X outdrive.

Here are some older pictures from the previous owner. I've taken it out once with the previous owner, planning on getting out there this weekend again if the weather looks good.
