I did the same with my son but it was a bag of balloons that I made him take into the store. The lesson has never left him.

My Dad did this same thing.

Caught me stealing a matchbox car (a police car, ironically enough) when I immediately went and hid when we got back home.

Drove me back to PlayCo in Ontario and made me tell the manager.

Still remember it vividly to this day.

at about age 16 the "boys" were in Sears (yes I am old and Sears was a real store) and we stole an "easy out" in the tool section..Serious crime

Sears "cops" intercepted us, took us to Sears jail and told us "call your parents or your staying here"... Scared the shit outta me
parents were not too pleased

spent a few weeks on home lock down and lesson well learned

I literally just did the same thing to my six-year-old about a month ago. He picked up a toy at a grocery store and decided he was going to keep it and I found it when I got home. I had his ass and was able to sneak away for two minutes and call the manager at the grocery store and tell him to put the fear of God into my kid when I brought him back when he came to apologize. Needless to say, I don’t think he will be doing that again. he for sure thought he was going to jail

Why would you put that official blemish on your kids record, possibly jeopardizing their future options?
Absolutely correct your kids, nip that behavior in the bud.
BUT…turning your kids over to police is not the noble parental act it may seem to be.
This is not “back in the day” when we were kids.
This is the digital age, not Mayberry, and an act of stupidity by a kid WILL follow them if it’s a part of their record.
It’s one thing if the kid is a habitual criminal and the parent is out of options, it’s quite another to purposely fuck up your kids future thinking it’s an educational moment.

When I was a kid the cops had our parents permission to beat our asses if they caught us doing stupid shit, even stealing stuff. They’d deliver us to our dads and another ass whipping would commence.
Those days are long gone.
Turning your kids over to the police is a last resort, because it WILL follow them.

College acceptance, military acceptance, employment, all can be jeopardized by the foolish act of turning your kid over to the police in today’s world. Nothing can be hidden.
