Say hello to more automated ordering machines.

$20 an hour with annual wage increase equal to the lesser of 3.5% or the annual increase in the US-CPI
I saw UPS is doing the same with their new deal. Hiring less and switching to automation.

While wages in other professions are not keeping up at the same pace. It’s becoming more lucrative to work for a food chain or grocery store than it is to take up a real trade.

It’s a sad reality.
Here in Arizona, a 30+ hr McDonald's employee makes more than a teacher outside of Phoenix and Tucson. Here locally, a "laborer", construction helper, makes about the same as a fast food employee.

Wow.

In 1977 I made $2.15 an hour at Round Table Pizza.

What other industry has a 9X increase in wages since then?

WHAT GOVERNOR NEWSOM SAID: “California is home to more than 500,000 fast-food workers who – for decades – have been fighting for higher wages and better working conditions. Today, we take one step closer to fairer wages, safer and healthier working conditions, and better training by giving hardworking fast-food workers a stronger voice and seat at the table.”

Today they took a giant step closer to kiosks and automation replacing them.

A new chicken place in Long Beach has a sign for cooks at 25 dollars an hour. Looked at the menu online and they are pricey!

You're not wrong. I've adjusted my pay to our staff to reflect it, but most trade guys I know would rather dig a ditch then flip a burger. Plus you shifts can suck at the fast food joint and not much overtime.

What happened to “making something of yourself” as a means to make more money…… earn a promotion, change jobs, start a business. The big guys will survive by increasing prices and implementing more automation. The mom and pops will struggle to the point where it’s not worth it

The same worker will live the same life. ….Would you like something to brink with that digmac?

The mom and pops were already ran out of business in 2020.

Only flipped burgers at home, but dug ditches and worse. All for a lot less that 15-20$ an hour.

I feel like fast food and casual dining has already hit its intersection point on the graph of "bang for your buck" Most places are dirty, the food sucks, service is slow and they are all running lean crews due to the cost of labor. Pretty sure this will end a lot of these places....... or it gets even worse for more money.... who knows. Wild times.... $20 an hour for some of the most menial labor that exists.

C'mon man! have you ever had to find the "no cheese" button on a POS system... or monitor French fries to make sure they're cooked to perfection? Things are so stressful in a fast food environment that most don't even have the time to greet you as you walk through the door.

CA just bumped all HS kids and illegal immigrants out of jobs, potentially.

There is robots for my industry. I can buy a $300k robot that will run for 10 years and replace 3-4 laborers in the shop. 4X$40k=$160,000X10=$1,600,000-$300,000=$1.3M in savings over 10 years. Yes, robots can flip burgers and fry fries. Soon enough it will be a freaking vending machine in CA. You'll drive up or walk in and order on the app or at the screen and it will just pop out onto the counter and you'll never see anybody.

Good job CA. Another unsuccessful solution that only makes poor people poorer. Buying votes by keeping victims.

Here comes the "I can make 20$ an hour at McDonals" Conversations

My answer " Then go work at McDonalds"
exactly, we just lost a warehouse guy yesterday who went to work as a driver for Jimmy Johns for the same pay. i asked him if they were paying him mileage or gas or giving him every weekend and night off and he just stared at me like i had 3 heads.

The Gov always hurts the group the claim to be helping.

This will do the same !

You can't make a career ( being a non manager) in a fast food environment unless you are going to charge the customer $45 per meal.

Fast food is already inedible dog crap that is killing us so no one will spend big $$ to eat it.

Wait until he has an accident and the insurance company finds out he was using his car for business and did not tell them.

They will just eliminate jobs and force you to completely order via the app or kiosk.

California fast food and restaurant business goes poof in 3...2....1...

Why would you be a buss boy or a cook at a restaurant for $15 when you could go across the street for a easy push a button job and calk gun sqeeze of sour cream and make $5 more.

I don't think food is the most lucrative business to begin with and with the rising cost of food/rent its going to become a mess. 3 combos at carls or arbys is pushing $45 so I don't go. I can cook for 15 people for that kind of scratch and it will be a shit ton better than fast food.

I made the vending machine/ Japan reference about this earlier here at work as well. Why keep 25 people on payroll at one location when you can get a prepackaged distro center that is highly automated to cook and prepare the meals for your stores.. Pay 10 people to run the factory and in turn eliminate potentially several hundred floor level employees in store.

We said this at $15, we are saying it again at $20.

It just means fewer fast food jobs… which is what the state sponsored union really wants because it gets these people closer to guaranteed income when they are replaced with automation.

These people are great at inching along and playing the long game.

The cost savings with automation is significantly more over 10 years when you take inflation and rising labor costs into account. That savings is probably closer to $2M or more.

The car wash industry is a perfect example of what’s going to happen in most of the service industry moving forward. At the time, cost wasn’t even the driver for car washes, after E-Verify it became increasingly more difficult to hire immigrants and maintaining a full service shop was nearly impossible. Needless to say the express wash concept was invented and the margins skyrocketed as a result, even though that was not the initial intent.

Hopefully automation will curb inflation when it comes to the cost of food service. A Big Mac Combo is over $10 now, I went to Panera the other day and it was over $20 for a sandwich and a small salad. I rarely eat out anymore as a result.

I prefer ordering anyways thru the Apps or Kiosk. That way there is no questions for the idiot on the other side of the speaker. Half the time they fuck something up!
Agree. We are halfway there.

Since when did working at a fast food place become a career? I always thought of it as an entry level job.

My boys were EMTs prior to becoming firemen and it was insulting that they only made $11-$13 an hour for all that responsibility, especially when they were hiring at the McDonald’s in Banning for $17 an hour to push buttons with pictures on them and ask if you want fries with your order.

Since adult immigrants with families started taking these jobs from kids and making them careers.

At the end of the day, if they cut off their government subsidies and pay them $20/hour, that’s probably better. But it’s CA, we know that won’t happen :)

It's $45 now it will be $55 for the combos next week. I could careless make it $30 an hour i'm not eating garbage food at that price point. ::D

Feds are trying to lower inflation by crashing the economy meanwhile CA is giving out $20 an hour for fast food workers. Seems like a smart plan where all sides are working together to accomplish something...lol

we are always out and about for soccer tournaments and games... in-n-out seems to be our #1 spot for something quick... place is clean with good service and can still feed the family of 4 for around $40. We used to stop at Habit, or Panera, chipotle etc, but family of 4 ends up being close to $60, service sucks and portions have shrunk. If we're not on the road, we rarely eat out otherwise..... like I said earlier, the whole bang for your buck / convenience of eating out is close to gone.

Yeah me too. Even digging ditches that were full of hazardous waste lol.

Absolutely nothing against anybody working at the food industry I just never have, and I know a lot of trade guys wouldn't want to do it even if the pay was similar.

This whole deal is by design. They aren't dumb they know business will do what it does to keep their margins which will open the door for a UBI because of all of the layoffs due to automation.

In n out is the best bang for your buck. I try to go to give business to the mom and pop independent places.
I’ve also been going to the grocery store deli to get a sandwich. Not too expensive and probably better for you.

It is amazing that they have the highest quality and most affordable menu.
