We use kronos and badge in for everything, start time is 5:30 at 5:31 you late a dinged, we also punch in and out for 30 minute lunch, 31 you get written up.
As a worker, and I was busting my azz, I'd tell ya to fuck off.
As an employer, I'd love it, but have leniency for the guys busting hump, and use it to get rid of slackers.
I use a system called Corrigo. I use mine for service but they also have a construction application that Im sure is good.
It tracks there time and places a stamp on the map where they start and stop there job. It automaticily adds there time to the jobs and syncs up with my Quickbooks. It takes my less then 2 min to do payroll now.
Its an App that they can download to any IPhone or Android. The best part is its on there phone that is also what you talk to them on, They always have it with them.
If you get it plan on loosing a few guys. The ones that complain the most are the ones ripping you off. I tell everyone its there to keep everyone honest.
I pay about 3k a year for 5 field guys. I think its another 5-600$ per year for each additional guy. Money well spent. Not having to track time cards and placing cost to jobs with out anyone in the office is priceless
Today I was 10 min late and left 10 min early AND took an extra 5 min at lunch. And that what I got paid for. I'm also the guy 15 min early alot and the guy bringing materials and tools from home. And finishing jobs before they have a chance to change thier minds. If they got on me for being 1 minute late there would be a Problem. Fuck that.
My SiL has a BIG landscaping co. You've seen thier trucks ,in the slow lane, doing the speed limit. They are all gps'd, and he has ALOT of them. Says it has paid for itself may times over. I knew a guy that bragged what a hero he was getting his licence and building a landscaping company and buying equipment. Turns out he worked for my SiL's co. and was dropping off a couple guys then going to his own jobs and using SIls employes and materials to do the job.
Many years ago I instituted time clock into our business. Before that it had just been straight pay on the honor system. You should have heard the bitching and complaining, it was deafening almost from a few. I had a dozen or so employees at the time. Funny though how payroll went down substantially and immediately. Long lunches, leaving early, coming in late, now no longer flew. They didn't like it because it stopped all the cheating on time. Those employees are all down the road now. New employees I have hired in past recent years have no issues with our timeclock system. Funny how that works.
You are on the right track Mandelon, get rid of the freeloaders. If they'll cheat you on time they'll cheat you in every other way you can't monitor also. (like dragging their ass on jobs on your dime). (like the tools that just happen to get lost on the job). (like taking side jobs based off your investment and advertising).
The union guys don't need to cheat....LOL life's too good already.
I think some sort of GPS phone tracker is going to be the ticket.
I have always been pretty lenient on time....I don't bust anyone's balls over a few minutes here or there. Honor system.. If you come late, stay late....gotta leave early, then show up early. Not a big deal. But some timecards always say EXACTLY 7:30 start time and EXACTLY 4:00 leaving time.... there is just no way that can happen.....day after day? Yeah right. So those guys I am suspicious of.
I had an employee steal tools. The deed done over time so it was hard to notice. He eventually bragged to another employee who told me immediately.
I told the thief to open the trunk of his car if he wanted his final check. He refused, so did I. He went to the EDD and I got royally fucked (another thread). He got my tools and I was told its a Civil matter. Filed a police report that went nowhere. Never more angry at another human....pretty much ever.
So if you don't like them, suspect something, or even hate their shoes send them packing but give them their final check right then and there. :thumbsdown Tape it up on a street pole about 12' high and just say I don't know how it got there.
Yes, Please.
