So, last week the wife had to travel for work and calls me up in a panic that the warning screen came on saying she needed to add oil immediately. Her car is a BMW F10 with the 4.4L V8. These engines are known for oil consumption so I tell her don't panic and tell her to head to the nearest O'Reilly's (which was 10 miles away) and I'll send her a pic of exactly what oil to put in it and she can be on her merry way. I proceed to quickly pull up their site to make sure that exact store has the oil in stock and the site says yes. I send her the pic of exactly what the oil jug (5 quarts) looks like and tell her to add 2 quarts out of it. I'm thinking problem solved and I'm going to get nookie for being such a manly man when she gets home in a few days. :p

She calls me from the store and the woman working tells her they don't have it in stock. I said "Well, just get 2 quarts of it then". Nope, don't have quarts in stock either even though the site says they have all this shit in stock at that particular store. The lady in the background says "We do have another brand in stock!" I ask what brand it is and I hear "Mobil". I said OK, that will work. Crisis avoided, everyone's happy, and I may still get nookie!

I finally looked in the trunk tonight to get something out of it and...

This is what I sent her to get-

You need to withhold the nookie from her.

In 1992 I was dating my wife. She had car problems with her 1989 Grand Prix. I worked at a garage and I took her car and spent $800 in parts on it plus labor. New key switch (that was the problem it would get stuck) tires, brakes, plugs, wires, fuel filter, shocks and struts, belt, etc.
Did t all on a Saturday. Tuesday she traded it in on a new car……..

Some oil is better than no oil, the right oil is better than the wrong oil....she got it halfway right.

I'm lucky to be in the auto parts industry...and having spent the last 20 years talking to parts stores all around the country creating a bit of network. My wife is pretty good when it comes to car shit, she monitors the instruments while driving and calls me if anything is "off".

She was driving somewhere 400 miles away a few years ago and it was 100+ outside and the A/C quit working. She found the multi-meter I hid in her glovebox and was able to follow basic instruction to test things...found a bad A/C clutch relay....I called a contact at Napa who did a search and a found a relay about 60 miles away and got it on a truck to transfer to a store about 20 miles away while she and the boy stopped for lunch...She pulled up at the store, the counterguy walked out and handed her the relay, she popped it in and everything worked and they were happy.

Haven't been able to get her to check the tire pressure occasionally though. Her new ride has TPMS though....and I bought her a VIAIR compressor....so she has no excuse to make it my problem lol.

Put a reminder on your calendar and check your oil monthly.

This is a you problem, not a her problem.

And I would guess that should go an oil change without needing a top off,:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Ask me how I know that you’ve never owned a BMW before? 🙃

These things don’t have dipsticks, oldman! The oil level sensor tells you that you are either safe or not safe.

Per BMW, it is “normal” for N63 twin turbo’d engines to “consume” 2-4 quarts of oil during intervals. This is well known on these engines and in fact, if you go to the dealer when your warning light comes on, they will top it off for you at no charge as part of a class action settlement.

BTW, these engines hold 10.5 quarts of oil. This misunderstanding is a you problem, Sir. 😉

Edit- I know my wife has absolutely no mechanical aptitude, but she more than makes up for it in other ways and has really nice boobs. My real issue is how she was allowed to walk out of an O’Reilly’s with Delvac (with semi’s on the label for fuk’s sake!) for a BMW.

No I've never owned a BMW, but from what I've heard is the best ones are ones still under warranty.

I have a fleet of 6 cars I rotate through, A couple have over 300K, and might use some oil. (not 2-4 quarts between intervals though) Fluids and pressures get checked first weekend of every month like clockwork. No dip stick and a known oil consumption issue means you should treat it like an old Toyota Tercel an throw a jug in the trunk.
If my wife had that issue I'd be under the gun for knowingly putting her in that spot without a back up plan.

Seriously, A jug in the trunk would help on a known issue.

Is that how you treat your boat?

:p

Honestly, I’ve never had to add oil until the last oil change interval. That’s not to say that the engine hasn’t been consuming oil, but just that it never got low enough for the sensor to alert. I figure now that it is getting up there in miles that it may be using a bit more. Still no leaks and no smoke.

Believe me, there will be a nice little oil add care package in the trunk for her from here on out until she decides that she wants a new ride. I’ve given up on talking her into to it because she loves the damn car!👍

P.S. You sound exactly like my Old Man and my boat has a dipstick. 😜

haha,
My old man pounded in my habits,
And I added a trans dipstick to the wife's ride, It was the same, sealed system, drove me crazy.... But it was probably easier to do.👍

So it looks like both the Castrol and the Mobil meet the same API standard, though the "diesel" oil probably has some additives for the "gasoline" oil doesn't.

I wouldn't worry about it, especially how Bimmers burn a little oil anyway. Which must be a characteristic of German engines. The prime movers we have for our generation plant are German designed and built and burn some oil, which is normal.

Damn, Par for the course though,,,

My daughter needed a radiator cap for her Mini Cooper. Also a BMW product. She's at Oriellys and the young kid is trying to find her cap. Needs to be 16psi I believe, but don't quote me. Kid is trying to tell my daughter psi doesn't matter and she tells him no, the thermostat works off pressure not temperature and he's not buying it. The older guy at the counter was on the phone listening and when he gets off he looks at the kid and said. "No she's right. BMW does some funky stuff especially with the Mini's. She needs the correct psi cap. Stop arguing with her and get her what she asked for. Then offered her a job. 🤣

Most all of Us had some exposure like a dad or neighbor or autoshop teacher to get us by the basics. In both my businesss I find the majority of women I deal with at shops and dealers parts suppliers etc are clueless not necessarily because of lack of some mechanical aptitude but rather the way society has evolved ( they have guys in their lives they depend on and haven't had to have "hands on" ) My wife for example can understand most of the basics because of exposure to me and because she runs our auto inspection business and does the dispatching BUT I cant see her doing an oil change or a battery replacement But she makes an awesome Sammich plus she cute and sexy . My grand daughter is however a "grand experiment" Shes worked at JBP now for 6 months (since boot camp) Yesterday I said Hannah go pull that Jacuzzi jet out... She did most of it on her own (she has assisted on a half dozen) Its Hands on vocational training that makes the difference , "book learnin" not so much 😍

I run Delo 400 in almost everything.
Big block Chevy jet bote. Full roller motor.
SBC jet bote, roller cammed.
XR600r
(3) 7.3's those are roller cams too.
Various SBCs, all flat tappet, Delo has the zinc needed.
743 Cummins. Yeah, even a '58 and it's a full roller. Unlike the baby 6.7 and 5.9 "modern" engines, that are flat tappets.
Generator
12 HP B&S garden tractor.
Probably missing something.

In my experience, turbo motors use some oil. Even over 600k miles, the old 7.3 uses 2 quarts between oil changes, 5k miles. The add mark is 2 quarts. But the 7.3s are junk, so I've been told.

@Roosky01 Good for her getting things handled.
