Yesterday afternoon, picking up son from school. As he's walking out in the crowd, the "banger" looking kids walk up to him. Actually, two thugs and a kid dressed like the guy from the "Substitute" movie, black turtle neck, silver chain...nice hair.

My son is a 100ft out, and he looks panicked. I debate my options, watching hands of thugs. After a tense, tense moment, son looks relieved, smiles and shakes the young gangster's hand. He heads to the car, and we head off to the gym.

Well shit, I ask what the hell that was about. My son fills me in. The day before, he was sitting at a table at lunch and saw something going on. Apparently, some sophomores were picking on a freshman. The freshman was from one of the "special classes", as my son put it. My son stayed seated, and asked them to stop. They didn't. So he got up, and approached them. They went on their way, and the freshman split.

"I know you said to stay out of trouble, and I'm trying!"
"No, I get it..."

All said kids were Mexican, so he was panicked when walked up on. Turns out, the lead banger looking kid was the freshman's older brother. He thanked my son. The freshman had made a break for it after, and tried to find his brother, and pointed out my son as "that big kid".

Interesting start to the year

Looks like your kid won't have much to worry about this year. Nice to see him get a benefit for being a good man.
As I'm sitting here in the waiting room for my blood pressure doctor, gonna have to say I'd wished he waited a week or so
He's very much guided by emotion. At his size, it can get very "Of Mice And Men". He's extremely protective of special needs kids, always has been. The past few years it's been more obvious though, both due to his world view, and society's decay I think.

Dejavu…
In SW Texas, being a white boy is not a privilege, because the school systems are over 70% hispanic.
When I say I got into at least 1 fight per week. I am not exaggerating, it never ended well for my opponent. Growing up on ranchs and playing football since 4th grade… I was one strong SOB for my age, being 6ft 218 @ 17 yo helped also.

I graduated in 1989, around 1988ish is when they started pulling guns or trying to fight 3-4 against one.

Honestly, I loved to fight back then. I would make them throw first. That way I was defending my self and never got suspended.

Its a totally different world today for sure.

Good on your son for looking out for kids that need it.

My Fiancé is a dean at a middle school up here (she switched this year from elementary to middle). Nothing but gang fights and trouble this year, girls and boys.

My kid has always been a protector and has some similar stories. I raised him that way and would back him to the highest level if he ends up smashing some dipshit for picking on a younger, weaker or disabled kid.

You should be proud but make sure he understands the risk of stepping into things that can get out of control. Sometimes it might be better to notify school officials or the police.

This is my biggest fear. He's just a big goofy kid, 6'4", 240-something now...and getting bigger.

He's never had to defend himself against some things. Those same things are what would be needed by most to take him down. Part of me thinks I should teach him, but part of me wants him to stay a little kid. Kids shouldn't need to know some things. It's something that I'm conflicted about, how to teach him, and how to explain how his old man knows...and really shouldn't.

Your son is too big and stands out no way to hide from the morons trying to prove themselves
Big guys seem to be a target just like the small week kids only difference is the juvenile delinquent will have pushed around a bunch of the small guys and will be able to spot a big guy that lacks confidence, teach him what he will surely need to know at some point.

So on to my story in 7th grade we moved during Christmas break so I’m the new kid mid year i make friends easily so no big deal there but one girl I talked to had a twin brother and he did not like me talking with her and quickly decided to fuck with me, after a number of small incidents and warnings by me stop and knock off the shit he opened up and stapler and hit me in the arm and stuck staple In me
My father had given me permission to attack anybody that struck first
I started beating on this kid and chased him into a corner and did not stop until I was pulled off and that was the last time I had anybody challenge me.
The principal called my father with me and the other kid in his office together after being told what I had done he asked one question did the other kid start it or did I after the principal assured my dad the other kid started it my father said that I had probably stopped hitting the kid too soon and wanted to know what other punishment was going to be handed out to the other kid.
That was about 1977 so I know things have changed but standing up for yourself will help him stand up for those that can’t

@arch stanton , the reason he said anything about the "staying out of trouble" has to do with last year. He done F'd up. He didn't start the altercation, but he took a first swing. Words are words, but taking a swing is something different. With his size even last year, I told him all it did is make him look like the bully.

He's not a super confident kid. Working out seems to be helping a bit. He's the youngest of three. An overachiever older sister, an older brother with some health issues, and now he's coming up really just trying to figure out who he is.

I can identify with him. I was the youngest. My brother has his masters and my sister had, well, "issues". The bad part is, I see a lot of myself in him and that's not always a good thing.

Your right don’t want to be the bully or even appear to be,it’s got to be tougher now than when I was a kid we didn’t worry about knives and guns or an overreaction from the school

… Very awkward for you,…but I think he really needs to know… Maybe take him up to a spot where the two of you might be comfortable… a hilltop…a mountain top… Sit down with him when you know he is comfortable…. And you are comfortable. .. …Unfortunately the time may come… when you will be very glad you had the sit down with him…🤷🏽‍♀️

Well, I'm thinking my son may have found his calling. A "cooler", or maybe a bouncer/bar back?

It happened in weight training. Two kids were sitting on a bench, and not doing anything. Coach Young, the teacher, yelled at everyone...and then the class had to run. After the running, there was tension between one of the "sitters", and a pissed off runner. As my son was telling us at dinner, he started to smile. "I stepped up beside both of them, and put a hand on their shoulders. Then I said 'We are all God's children here'."
He said it as a joke, not as a preacher...funny as hell really. It caught both the boys off guard, and they started laughing too. Later one of them passed him in the hall, and laughed again.

He's starting off a happier kid, and a bit better student too. I'm thinking his state of mind is helping with decision making. I don't see him becoming a preacher, but he could probably make a pretty good crew runner on a jobsite gig. Only a few weeks in, and he's only a junior. We'll see.

Size has its privileges. You can't teach tall.
I was lucky to be 6'3" 230 in college and was able to work as a bouncer in bars in Vegas. It was actually fun.

At 5'11" and 230, I did some in my 20's. Not tall, but was a decent build coupled with an adjustable attitude for the situations or customer base. This kid towers over me now, and has some mass to him. Heck, it was decent money, and helped make house payments. We have a place called Whiskey Row ;)
