Will it hit freezing tonight in Havasu?

Go to Home Depot and get some heat tape. They make various lengths. I use this on my rigs to keep things from busting over night on job sites. It has a standard plug on one end, and you can route it anywhere you want.

What change in engine area temp would a 100W bulb produce? I have done this in the past and put the light on a light sensor plug, so it turned on at dusk, off at dawn. Wondered if, at say ambient 28 degrees, the bulb could create 4-5 degrees of change.

I would think that putting the bulb right up against the block would help that spot. Just not sure if it would affect the whole area enough.
I have tested this many times over the years.
I don't like to winterize my boat before Oct. 31 because we get some good weather in october and early november some times.
I have an engine hatch so it may make a difference. That said. I don't shut the light off. It isn't that expensive. Yes putting the light as close to the block as possible facing up it typically keeps the block about 40 deg even when it gets down into the low twenties.

I can live with the temperature, this fucking wind is driving me nuts. We have been at the river for a week, and there have only been 2 days with no wind. We were supposed to stay until Saturday, but I think we are leaving tomorrow instead.

Holy shit, the wind just stopped. My fingers are crossed for tomorrow.

a 100 watt bulb makes ~ 340BTU/Hour of heat energy (incandescents are something like 98% thermally inefficient, they make mostly heat rather than light), that is enough to make a 20 degree temperature rise in a 3'x3'x3' box with normal insulation value according to the online heating calculator.

You also have to remember that the bulb doesn't necessarily have to increase the temperature, it helps to sustain the heat from the day through the night when it's colder.

Well, I'm 200 miles east of Havasu, and at about 5,500ft...it was 15* about 20min ago! I was born and raised in SoCal...I'm freezing balls right now! Wood stove burning since noon, 72 inside:)

when I had a cabin cruiser moored in a marina back in the 70's, I made two S/S cylinder with cheese holes drilled in them and 100W bulb in each. Put them in the lowest part in the bilge. We had pretty cold temps back then into -10 C. Never had an issue with the engine. If anyone wants to do the incandescent bulb dealio, you should have two sets like I did, in case one bulb fails and burns out.

It's like $15 bucks to get an extension cord and lamp socket.... Is it really worth the worry for that and 15 minutes of your time....

While I love the info.. Don't you ever get tired of being smarter than everyone else? :D FU Shane! :D :D

By the way, I've been lazy as shit the last couple years, but I'm gonna fire up the garage on "project" time so you'll see some interesting shit coming out of here soon.. From basic to holy shit balls.

Garage thermostats set at 74 (means more like 76-78).. I'm contemplating taking my shoes off because even the concrete is warm to the touch. :)

I actually didn't know and thought it was kinda a good question. Took about 3 minutes to look up :D Take the wattage of the bulb and convert to BTU/Hr (didn't even bother factoring in effciency as like i said incandescents are basically heaters, put out 98% heat for 2% light per watt), then use the normal BTU calcs to determine temperature rise, which is a standard HVAC calculation used to size furnace/air conditioners.

From an anecdotal stand point you can feel the heat a 100 watt bulb makes when you open the engine hatch so i knew it had to me more than just a few degrees, i was actually surprised that it could be that much. Most of it would be based on the R value of the engine compartment. (this would include things like the boat cover, hatch upholstery, if the compartment is a doghouse or goes full width to the sides of the hull, thickness of the hull below, etc)

I had a customer that put a light bulb in his bilge and the boat caught on fire. Fire inspector said the fire was caused by it. Don’t know all the details but I guess anything can happen

If a guy was worried enough an inexpensive single size electric blanket would do the trick and no worries about a spark. Set it low and forget about it until it warms up.

Your pic reminded me of pics of my relative's pool in Kansas, this was in the 1960's. I recall seeing a couple of rather large logs floating, and or trapped in the ice. Seems the logic if I recall correctly was as the water froze and expanded, it would force the logs to rise, relieving the stress on the pool structure.

Go buy a bunch of 12” balls and toss in it and run pump at night ;)

So the balls would act in a similar manner as the logs I mentioned in the post prior to yours ? I've never had a pool in a icy
cold environment.

We had one ( pool in St George) running the pump at night and the ball’s moving around we never froze

So the balls are storing and releasing heat, or relieving pressure should it freeze ?

I pointed our water jets up so it would make balls move around , our pool was fiberglass never had any problems . I don’t know what would happen if pool froze solid 3-5” of ice ?

No, just moving around helps prevent the ice from forming, similar concept to ducks being in your pool. We used logs as well back east, those would pop up and out if the ice got too thick so that the pool isnt split apart.

We had an above ground pool when I was a kid. Dad would drain it below the filter box, and empty the filter and pump. Froze solid every year and didn't hurt a thing.

It has to be damn cold for a while before moving water will freeze. Like 0 or below for a couple days. Your dips into the 30's at night probably won't hurt a thing.

Highs here in cheeseland for the next 3 days are 35-38 degrees. Never figured it'd be warmer here than havasu.:eek:

It's still colder there! LOL Our highs are in the 50's, but us Desert Rats aren't used to this freezing at night (or cold during the day for that matter).

Wouldn't surprise me.
If ya rig the light bulb socket inside a metal utility box, then drill holes in the box like a cheese shredder, the box will heat up and make more ambient heat than the light bulb by itself and a shed load safer.

Personally, I like draining the blocks, backing off the rockers, etc, etc. lol.
