Wide load permit for boat/trailer

All joking aside, I'm contemplating a boat that has a 10'-7" beam that I want to trailer for the ocean. Who has gone thought this before? @H20 Toie have you?

It seems pretty straight forward online for the permit.

What I'm not understanding are the road regulations like the chart below...

I live in the IE and will tow to Dana Point, Newport, Long Beach and maybe Powell...


Any insight will help while I navigate these rules... Thanks

If you can change your boat needs to a 10 foot beam it gets a lot easier. Or can you break it down somehow under 10? 10 foot and under you can get an annual over size and it only requires the wide load banners and two flags at the widest point. Over 10 foot requires a pilot car and a permit every time you move it. I have been going the annual oversized for years in AZ and now in UT for the 17 mile drive from my shop to Wahweep.

Cant change the beam and will have to pick a different boat model.

What I've been seeing is that I'm not needing any pilot car on "most hwy's" unless they are brown or red and these are far in-between if I'm under 12'. But could be reading these charts incorrectly.

No help on the permit but spill the beans. What are you looking at?
I've been going back and forth for a while if it's the right thing to do.. Work to busy to use it or work to slow to afford it...ha ha ha

But looking at Grady White 30' Marlins. My father had a Grady 282 sailfish (trailered) for many many years and great boats.

I'm just wanting one that has a generator and AC/HEAT for the cab and the sailfishes didn't or a place to put it. Need to make it somewhat comfortable for the wife and kids, lol.

I've also never been to Powell and this would work like a white trash house boat....ha ha ha...


This was my fathers, and towed it Vancouver Island British Columbia for years to Salmon fish.

ok look at 10'7 you only need a calif permit. you can purchase an annual one for $90.00 through a permit service. Unlike what people said above the legal limit is 8'6 wide but up to lets say 9' no one will bother you. At 10'7 You need 4 red flags one at each corner of the load. for you that means one at the rear on each side you can zip tie them to the stainless U bolts. Then you need a front and rear banner that says oversize load. Do not buy the ones that say wide load. Anything else give me a call at 909-285-7486 for going to lake powell when you go across the interstate 40 to flagstaff you stop at the az port of entry at topok. they will sell you the az oversize Have with you a ending address in page az. that's it very simple. Some of the advice above is wrong,

When the time comes it’s easy to call the state permit office and get specifics for exactly what you end up doing. I spoke to both AZ dot and UT dot when permitting my boat. They were, really helpful. Give them a call and ask them what 10 7 will require and what route you plan on taking. It’s been 4 or 5 years since I called because I am just renewing my permit every year at this point and only for Utah.

And I mis spoke on the wide load, I just checked my banners and its oversized load. The permit spells it all out.

If you want I will send you copies of my permit.

My formula 400SS was a pain in the ass to tow. width being just one issue, i had trailer modified to get it as low as possible but still had to take all the stuff off the radar arch. you do not want to be over 14' high. permit is piece of cake, just get one for the year, also realize that in az you can't travel at dark with oversize. pay attention to what roads you can or cannot travel on . PCH is a no no at certain places. the 400SS was 11' wide, but no one brings out a tape measure so no biggie. also is boat and trailer over 10k pounds? if so you are suppose to have different license. All my Cigarettes were over 10k and never had an issue.
Biggest thing is get a truck that can safely haul the load. just because the truck is rated for X pounds doesn't mean its safe, I had a F450 ( well within rated weight) and towed the 400 with it once. scared the shit out of me. only used the sportchassis or Peterbilt after that.

Benn awhile, but I believe the Ca. permit is for Ca. highways. Once you enter city streets, that requires permission to travel. No one cares till there is an incident. Even a boat just under 10 feet gets really sketchy when flanked by big rigs. You've got to train yourself not to look, just go straight!!

Thanks.... Boat/trailer/gear/fuel is about 14,800 my 5th wheel is the same if not more loaded... My 40' cyclone loaded was 18k +/- and would say 99.5% all the guys heading to Glamis don't have the endorsement either. But getting a non commercial A is not that hard just more of a pain to get it done.

Shouldn't have an issue with my F-350 and like to keep the 4 wheel drive on those wet ramps..... Would be nicer to have the dually though, I have to get a new truck anyways in a few years and would prefer the 450 anyways as they turn much better....loved my '08...

I do need to check the height though. It can be close to that 14' as it needs a 9'-9" bridge clearance when in the water.
