My son is gonna be a freshman this year, and is a purple belt in martial arts. He LOVES to fight and wants to go out for wrestling in HS this year. He's already been working out with the team, and a pool party this weekend, I got to talk to the coach.

He said considering his size and ability, he's think'n he may start on the JV team.

Any advice you guys can pass along to me here?

Should I send him to the camps you have to pay for?

Is it cool that he starts on JV?

Any advice from those in the know, would be greatly appricated!!! :champagne:

if its anything like other competitive high school spots, a freshman starting on the JV team isnt anything bad.

I played hockey my entire life, ended up getting pretty good and being asked to come to a Boarding School in New England to play. Freshmen never went straight to Varsity at that level, none of them had the size.
Camps were also integral in my getting better as a player, i would suggest sending the kiddo if he really wants to pursue it.

As a former College and HS state place winner in wrestling and National Champ in Karate I think I might have the pulse on this one.

Martial Arts will give your kid a head start in wrestling for balance, timing, agility, flexibility etc.

Like any sport it take hours of dedication and hard work to be the best. I started when I was 7 years old. I had the basic fundmentals down before I was in HS. He needs as many camps, training, extra workouts as possible. I even wrestled at the local college during HS to get more training.

His goal should be to wrestle against the best at all times. The goal isn't to be the best Frosh wrestler! He will learn more from the better wrestler's rather than kicking ass on the beginners or people not as good as him. Good luck

Awesome, thanks. He's already training with the adult black belts in MA, and he has improved leaps and bounds because of it! I get your point on traning with the best.

His coach said he is REAL good at defending himself, and said that was a key point a lot of kids just dont get.

I'm real excited about these next four years. Prolly even more than he is...

:p

Some martial arts moves are illegal in wrestling. I'm sure his coach knows which ones.

I've seen kids disqualified for using them.

Just a note to be aware of.

I'm pretty sure all of em are at the high school level. But he's looking forward to "brawling" at his dojo. He will have a much better ground game now! :D

My son wrestled his sophmore year. He had no previous experience, but did well. Occasionally was asked to come up to JV if they were short. He felt the same way about wrestling better people to become better.

He and a few others didn't continue though because they did not care for the coach. Damn shame too. He loved the sport and we loved going to see the matches. Not sure we got all the reasons though. I think that something else may have influenced him....

As a 25 year wreslter, current coach and cif ref. I will give you just one piece of advice to you and one to your son. To your son, when you are on the mat, be on the mat. by that I mean all your focus has to be in what you are doing. If you can not do that. You might as well not be there. you need to always be looking to improve. To you, you are his father, not his coach. its ok to crack the whip when it comes to training, just don't go over board ps please don't post any info about off season contact with his coach.... I have to report it or I lose my reffing cert. it can mean dq a entire team for the season.

He loves to fight, he's totally into it. I'm not one of those guys that yells at the coach. Saw too much of the shit in little league. But I will bust his (my sons) chops when its over. Sent you a PM about this off season thing. Thanks.

One of the boy scout dads told me...

Keep the kid away from the fumes in HS.

I was like, huh?

You know, purfumes, gas fumes, those kinna fumes! :p

If he makes JV it is still an achievement, remember some states like OK have wrestling programs in GRADE SCHOOL so if he can pull out JV with no prior grappling background he still has something to crow about.

I wouldnt send him to a camp until he's gotten a year under his belt
My experience with wrestling is that learning one or two moves from standing and from the down position and superior conditioning are the way to go.
In wrestling like boxing, conditioning is paramount, I'll take a fundamentally
sound boxer in shape over a first round beauty who runs out of gas in the third round every time. Let him learn a few takedowns: single leg, double leg,
head throw and practice them over and over. Make him run sprints if he's gonna be a good wrestler he has to run sprints and learn to like them.

Sprints with a little distance mixed in, wrestling requires explosive movement
that comes from sprints -walk, then a sprint. jog slow then a sprint.
He masters a few moves and knows them forwards and backwards and gets in shape he will do well. What weight is he?

He's 5'7" and 160lb. He has very little fat on him now, due to his martial arts training. He goes 4 days a week, and would go every day if he could.

Don't let his coach talk you into him cutting weight
A young guy growing and going thru puberty needs to eat
If he's not carrying much body fat he should wrestle at the weight
he's at now- good luck- wrestling takes guts and builds character
It's all on you - it will be a great experience for him keep us posted!

my son Nick wrestled for his high school, made varsity all four years, holds the record for most pins for any wrestler at his school. Never made it to state and isn't going to wrestle in college. but would like to coach.
It was a fun ride and a great experiance. Good luck to your son!!

Our nephew was forever turning down seconds and desserts while wrestling in high school. He was always rail thin. Anthony is solid and built like a tank. Not fat... just big bones, large frame (odd coming from midget parents). He had his check-up last week and the doctor said, "technically, he's obese because he falls in the 95th percentile for his age, but clearly, he's NOT... he's just SOLID."

Healthy diet? Absolutely, but dropping 10-20 pounds to change weight class? No way. As you said, there is a way to eat well and thrive, starvation is not an option.

Yup. Wrestled freshman and sophmore years with very little weight cutting because I was a little guy to begin with, 98's and then 103's. Junior year I started to grow and moved up to 119's. Was 27 wins 3 loses going into league and had no strength left. Didn't get pinned, but the same guys that I easily spanked early in the preseason were now getting me by a point or two. Needless to say I was like the walking dead and didn't have the strenth left to do anything about it by that point.

Between junior and senior year I started hitting the weights hard and was benching 2 plates for reps while only wieghing 130 lbs. Started the season out great and by christmas I was struggling to do reps with a single plate on the bench. Saw the same writting on the wall, said F'this, and walked away. All the "fun" in High School started immediately after that decision.:thumbsup

I still admire my coach. He was a marine wrestler, well acomplished, but just never took the time to really guide us in regards to diet and my parents were too busy with work to realize what was going on. My little brother started wrestling a few years later and I was all over his program like a fly on shit. Luckily for him by that time a new coach moved in and had evolved the team into what I hoped it had been when I was there. Diet was definately part of thier training.

Seems like in a sport like that at an age when kids are still developing that would be part of the program, but I doubt it is across the board.
