I might be wrong which isn’t a surprise but I think if you leave tip on cc
The server gets less and has to pay taxes
Tips on CC have to be claimed (Get taxed).
Cash or CC, server still needs to tip out those and in some places the cash don’t have to be accounted for each night.

Wow, I guess I am not truly old school yet 😁

I do carry a little emergency cash but put down the debit card for everything, from tips to toilet paper!

I have a debit card, but it's only used for fuel. I don't carry a credit card. I have no business reasons to right stuff off, so no advantage for me. Meals, tools, materials...greenbacks from the billfold. Old school, but works for my lifestyle.

I Implore you…cease using a debit card at the gas pump immediately.

Some places still have those bullshit covid induced coin shortage signs posted. We are heading to a royal f'ing and most don't even realize it.
Push the use of cash whenever you can.

I never use my debit card for anything anymore since it’s a direct link to my bank account. I made the mistake of using it at Vegas and it got skimmed. Nothing like having $20k disappear from my personal bank account. Not sure how it works, but my card or at least the card number, was used to buy shit not only local to the states, but Austria, Italy and Spain. Took about 2 months to sort it all out to prove I didn’t make those charges and get my money back into my bank. Now, if I use plastic, it’s my credit card…if it gets skimmed, at least it’s not money out of my bank.

I'm usually not too worried, as I don't keep much in the attached account. Around town here, I use one gas station, and I know the owner...he's been really good at checking his system since there was an issue 5-6 years ago. When I'm on long runs, I usually use cash at truck stops. It gives me an excuse to stretch my legs, and buy junk food.

If you use Cards most places add a 3% or more processing fee. We do cash, and tip according to service received! .... Matter of fact!

But if it bad service! ... I believe in under tipping!

Grown ups always have cash with them.
Now that’s kind of funny. I never have cash (for the most part). Seems everywhere you go they don’t want it. That said.
If I go to a nice dinner I always have extra cash to shake the hand of my waiter or waitress who treated me above and behond. I am a generous tipper. I don’t blame my servers for cooking issues. I do blame them for lack of service. I think you get what I’m saying. So if I get exceptional service I tip my usual 20+ %. And then make a point of thanking my server with some cash in a hand off.
I’ve never been a server / waiter etc. I couldn’t do it. I’d be fired on day one just from hearing how people talk the from a table away.

So, is it safe to assume all the "I never use cash" crowd don't go to hole in the wall bars, or titty bars?
Have times changed that much, do strippers have Paypal links tatted instead of tramp stamps? Barcodes?
I can’t remember the last hole in the bar I went into. Let alone a titty bar . Have a really nice set at home. 😱😱😂😂🥃.
More so because if I’m going out I don’t want dive bar food. Or waste it on some old saggy titties. Lol. 🙄🙄

Like I said, things may have changed. Haven't gone "boobs for bucks" in a loooong time, and haven't frequented any bars in over a decade....must be why I have cash in my wallet😂

Double sided sword in a weird way I guess.
I keep cash at home but for the most part when I go out I’m like why bring it. Most places frown on having to deal with it. Let alone make change. Which most don’t seem to even know how do these days. Lol

I read a thread this past year about tips. It was on a local Facebook "Bend Foodies" thread. A lot of servers commented. They stated that a lot of local restaurant owners screw their servers out of tips, by stating that they deduct the monthly credit card charges out of the tips, etc., before divvying the tips up. The local servers pleaded to please tip in cash.

Our local hardware store now has a sign that posts no cash sales .
I use a card anyway but it is strange.

I’ve said before. But what if you are at said local hardware store. Let’s say buying a generator or who knows what else. And you have a 400 to 1k tab/ bill. But said I only have cash. I would bet the price of that bill that said local hardware would take the cash.

Always cash direct to server. Management or Restaurant owner provided the table, the server provided the experience of your time at that restaurant.
I have heard this happening as well. Management takes a cut. The issue is that i don't typically tip in cash though,…

I have friends that tell me you can’t get a Happy Ending at a massage place unless it’s cash!

So it’s nice to have some cash on hand for a tip…. Or the Shaft - up to you!

Add me to the cash side of the list. If for some odd reason I use a card the tip is always in cash

Funny story: Two weeks ago I drove through Phoenix rush hour, in the rain, to some God forsaken area south of Apache Junction. My youngest had a football game there. I get there, go to buy a ticket..."here, scan this QR code, we don't accept cash".
It's drizzling, I have about one bar of service, and had just spent 3 hours to get there.
No way it would scan or go through. I had to pay a guy to buy my ticket for me. That was the first time in my life I had tried to scan a QR code.
Our football games still take cash up here...almost like it's America or something.

I pay cash whenever I can.

That said, I hate coins.

I have not yet been to a business that does not accept cash, I think I would leave and shop elsewhere if that ever happens.

DEBIT CARD - Only at a ATM at a bank.

Cash for meals and tip if I didn't like it. So when the bill comes, I put the cash on the tray and hand it to server. It is never a surprise when I mention that service/food was not real good.

Credit card for most things, but as others have said, a hole in the wall joint or just bad vibes.... cash.

A good 'ol boy has a feed and hay store, camping and fishing supplies. Cash gets a 10% discount. So there's that.
Most of the town has a locals discount, even better if cash.
Cash still counts in town.

I’m pretty sure you’re right, I believe restaurants are supposed to pay taxes, and/or estimate tips based on gross revenue. i’m sure there’s a resident tax expert on the boards that could probably answer this. 😁

There is nothing more awkward then a patron thinking it’s cool to hand pass money. There is no need for secrecy. Man up and hand the generous tip to the server in full view of party if you were ”treated appropriately”. And you wonder why you could not wait on yourself.

track my shit, like me, love me, hate me............ zero fucks. EVERYTHING than can, goes on the card EXCEPT the tip. Tip is always cash. I probably carry more cash than most. If there is a cash discount, than I am using it. If there's not, I am using the cards "rewards" every chance I get. You're buying it regardless, pay it at the end of the month, and get the program. frankly, you're giving away $ if you don't.

I always have cash, but just about never use it. Whether the server pays taxes on their tips is not my problem. Most of them suck anyway now. In the past they were mostly great, now not so much.

I went to a small mom and pop taco shop here in town and went to pay with cash. She said she would have to go to the back to make change and wanted to know if I could pay with a card.

Fine by me, but what owner (seemed like the counter lady was probably at least related) would willingly pay 2-3% in fees coming straight off their bottom line? Taco shops can’t be making that much anyway, you would think they would be all too happy to take cash.

Surprised no one points out that from the running a business perspective credit/debit eliminate some nasty issues cash creates: much less likely to get robbed/broken into without a bunch of cash, don't need a big safe, less employee theft, don't have to do daily bank runs, no counterfeit $. Yes, it creates other issues like charge backs. But think about a little taco place doing 10k/day. $300 to not deal with all of that can make sense. That said, still pay cash quite a bit...

2-3% is less than (or close to) the cost of dealing with cash maybe?
Trips to the bank, safe storage, all the things required to safeguard and transport a physical commodity of value.
I know lots of people do not like that answer.
Hey, contrary to popular belief I always have a little cash on me too.
But in todays digital world the idea of taking deposits to the bank is sort of Stone Age to a business that is trying to streamline for efficiency.
Just a guess.

I figure not taking cash might be better for many businesses as it reduces employee theft especially at a bar?

The list of reasons is long.
At some point each business looks at the % of card vs cash transactions and makes the decision.

I think you missed my point. I tip very well. I will also hand extra to a server that has treated very well so that person does not have to add that to the share tip pool.
As for waiting on myself again you missed the point. I would t or couldn’t be a waiter because my temperament wouldn’t let me be talked to or treated the way I hear some patrons talk to them.
They would have a face of water. And I would just walk out. Quit before fired 🙄

I'm getting a bit jaded. Previously we also liked to tip well in cash, but nowadays every food joint, whether it's a pizza restaurant, noodle house, or burger place, asks for a tip when paying by card and the restaurant is using a newer style card system. For doing nothing. And then you have the Covid employee surcharges...

My daughter works for Starbucks and I don't tip them lol
