I moved into my new house 6 months ago and my neighbors dogs still bark at me every time I'm in the backyard, and especially by the gate..

How dumb are these dogs, not realizing I live there? What gives? I'm thinking maybe they got the Rona and lost their sense of smell or something.. Especially because it's only one dog, the other dog I'm cool with. They're both pits too, so it's not like they're some dumbass breed.

Yeah I’m with the bacon comment. Toss a steak over the fence as you come and go and they will be happy to see you.

Though if they ever get out and see you it might be like the cartoons where you look like a side of beef with a little chefs hat on it. So maybe not such a good idea?

If it's just the one dog, my guess is it's the older of the two. It may have poor sight and smell. Sees movement, but no detail. Try "talking" with it as you walk through the gate or when it starts to bark.
Neighbor down the road has an old great dane. When he barks, you feel it. If he sees someone on the fence line, he'll run up barking. After a week or so of calling him by name, he now shuts up when he hears my voice.

We had a neighbor who had a dog that barked every time we were in our backyard…we tried everything, minus feeding him bacon. Finally got a dog training device and it worked. I would bring our dogs in the house, walk in our yard and when he barked, I just hit the button. He eventually stopped. Felt bad because it really isn’t the dogs fault but I should be able to use my backyard.

That is honestly just how some dogs roll. Fence warriors doing their dog protection thing. My dog does that same thing until my neighbor is behind the gate, then it's all fun and games. Shit.... they bark at me when I get home but I think it's more of a "Get your ass inside and let us in" type bark. 😂😂

Definitely the older of the two. Good idea, bacon and some words!

My Covid rescue has been a PIA. Barks at everyone all the time.
Dog has been diagnosed with severe anxiety, separation anxiety and has protective issues.
To go to the vet, it requires 24 hours of meds plus CBD cookies.
He has burned through 3 trainers and finally the last one said, whatever occurred to this dog before he was rescued F’d him up bad. Dog is super friendly with me, wife and daughter. Hates everyone else that walks on the property. Barks when anyone is at the house (even parking on the street). I like that when I am gone.

I can literally relate to you on both sides of the fence.
Neighbors to out west have a Scotty dog now for about 6 years.
Barks at me every day I water or pull weeds. Took some doing and training for Rocky (and later Millie) to not react to the little shit.

Now, on the east side...

The widow lady Barbra sold her place and moved.
These new people do not smell like a Barbra, look like Barbra, or talk with a Chicago accent.

These new people look, smell and sound?
Like Barbra’s gardeners. 🤷‍♂️
And their children sound like crying cats😡
And as we all know if they bark at the gardener....the gardener leaves eventually. 100% of the time. 😇

I’m not too sure what to do about it beyond offering we should build taller fences. Vinyl fences.

It's your problem sorry to say.

It's not your dog. You don't live there.

It's job is to either chase you off or warn it's master.

Doing it's job.

I would want my dog to back at my best fucking friend until I LET him in the gate.

Good dog.

I find that shit to be rude. As mentioned earlier I want to be able to enjoy my backyard/house and will show the same respect to my neighbors.
If it were looking through a fence between yards and barking i might agree. But if it is barking as someone approaches the house I'd say its only doing its job.

It's your problem sorry to say..........................................

Not necessarily. A while back I was having problems with both of my neighbors dogs barking. On the one side the dog was let out and left out at all hours of the night and day and the dog would bark. Some kind of hound or something that had a loud, obnoxious bark that would wake me up with windows closed and a fan on. Other side they would let the dog out at 4 am and leave it out there barking for close to an hour. That was right underneath my bedroom window and I did not have to wake up until 6 am. Neither one of the neighbors was very good at cleaning up after the dogs and it stunk something fierce. Had to do something.

So first thing I go to the village. They send me to the police dept. Was about 30 feet away. Talk to an officer, he tells me to hang out for a minute and goes in the office. Comes back and hands me a piece of paper with the ordinances regarding dogs barking and cleaning up their waste. If a dog is barking any time of day and it is bothering someone the dog owner would be warned and then fined. When a dog drops waste the owner had to clean it up as soon as it hit the ground, or they would be fined. A little the first time, and more each time it happened.

So back home I go to talk with the neighbors. I was nice, did not want to involve police. I also did not want to be woken up all hours of the night and early morning nor did I want to smell rotting waste when I walked outside or if I opened my windows. I was nice talking to the neighbors, but also explained my position and that I would not put up with it anymore. All was good after that. But I still do not understand how somebody thought leaving a dog out that barks almost constantly is OK. Or that the smell of rotting waste would not bother people. Worth noting that the neighbors were both adults, older then me.

So.........It may not be his problem, but how much does it bother him and how far does he want to take it?

First I’d have a talk with neighbor. Then as I expect like my situation. Nothing will change. They make units you can point over the fence and everytime the dog barks it sends a piercing ( not heard to you sound). And they actually shut up for a few.
If it’s only when you are in your back yard you’re lucky in a way. My neighbors used to let their dog bark all fucking night long. Until I got a flood light pointed in their window and an air horn at 3am.
Some people are just inconsiderate and won’t learn until you beat them at their own game.

This why cats are better. They are quiet, exterminators (pest control), and poop in a box.

In my county (colorado) the dog catcher will cite you if your dog barks longer than 7-10 minutes straight. They can bark every 30 minutes as long as its not longer than 7-10 minutes. Only takes one person to complain. Used to be they needed 2 neighbors to complain to cite you.

same in Carlsbad.
My vet recommended a Thunderwork thunder shirt calming wrap, so I finally broke down and ordered him one.
Since he goes nuts when the garage opens and my middle kid works until 130am today, going to try it out.

None of those details are in the OP.

I assumed it barked at him momentarily when ever it's in it's yard and he's in his and they run across each other. Or when he walks past it and it's in it's own yard.

Dog doing dog shit.

Some dogs will never like you, no matter what you do, it's just like people, some people just rub you wrong, nothing to do about it except avoid them.

If it's barking constantly, it's a problem, and that's a different conversation.

Make a nice meatball… fill it rat poison… throw it over the fence..

Problem solved.

Or… If you in CA inside city limits… have a talk with the owner, let them know. You paid good money for your house, you should be able to relax in your back yard without being barked at. Let them know, they have 2 months to solve the problem, or you will be calling animal control everytime it happens. Guess waht happens then… animal control comes out and monitors the situation, eventually fines said neighbor…

ASK ME HOW I KNOW…

My former neighbors in Murrieta, had two stupid fucking yap dogs. Chihuahua and another wired hired mutt. Yapped all freaking day while the neighbors where at work. The advice above worked for me… the end of the 3rd month… neighbor came over and asked me what bark collars do I recommend… Problem solved…

My dogs pull that shit, they know a calibration is coming. I dont put up with that nonsense.

Ever since my dog got into my good stash some 5 years ago he still barks at the sky. He got really hammered that night and it did some longterm damage.

People have gotten dumb AF and just let their dogs bark all day thinking “doing what dogs do” as if everyone else thinks their dogs are cute.

SBMech nailed it, it's not a nuisance issue, it's just annoying occasionally. My cousin's pits were so damn smart and trained they never barked unless someone touched the fence. Thought they're all the same lol

I'm gonna do the bacon thing or a hotdog next time I grill.

Only thing I can really add is become his buddy. The cool neighbor that he can't wait to see.

We rescued a pit pup awhile back. He's a dumbass. Sweet as can be, but now that he's not scared of everything and has confidence he will go out and bark at who knows what? Stands in the driveway barking up the hill, toward the sky, down the hill, across the valley. You get what I'm saying. Maybe he finally gets to hear himself and thinks he's cool? He was in the shelter for 8 months and he's not 2 years old. I'm sure if I had neighbors they would be wondering wtf he's barking at as much as I am. 🤣

Two pointers with upgraded hearing; they're reacting to kids two streets over. Happy Holloween!
