I'm looking for June 2006. It has an extremely in depth article about Hot To Build a solid Olds 455. There is always someone asking for help, but my copy is a very poor Xerox copy and this is stuff that really deserves a easy to find spot in the archives of the boating world.
Thanks in advance.

I would just tell them, get a Chevy!

Oh man i fucked around with two jet boats with 455's in them when I was poor. What a headache that was!

Because I didn't want that answer, I asked here first, before trying SCJB. The Olds really is a viable option for people on a budget if that is what they are starting with. A reliable 400 hp really isn't that out of reach. A fine motor for a first jet boat if it isn't over 21 ft and doesn't need to go faster than 50-55 mph.

That is the article but it is reproduced too poorly to read. I have a better copy but it doesn't reproduce well either. I'm tired of mailing paper copies to people.
Bummer, cheap scanner I guess.
Sorry but I gave my copy to a guy that ended up putting an LS in his boat. 🤨

Click on them, they get bigger. Easy to read for me at least.

FWIW Its not the Olds , Its the builders/machinist/operators , threated respectfully and not "driven like a rented Avis rentacar" they make good power and will provide lots of good Jet boating experiences . That said JBP does not offer or build them any longer , the profit versus the liability and heartache is simply not worth it . All Old Joes "mods" in the world wont make one last but care and common sense will

FWIW this was a Mondello motor (that was never run) we just rebuilt it before it hit the water Found .020 under crank with standard bearings straight outa Paso Robles Mondellos (RIP Joe)

If you've never put on a set of Olds heads on, yeah, Napa in Needles had a rebuilt set, standing knee deep in the river, in view of the bridge, when it's 110+ degrees out, because the valve seats didn't like the cold water/hot engine startup, then yore not really a river rat.
3 guys, and about 3 hours.
Ready to ski.

Hit It!!!

I was much younger then.

I was the fool that bought that boat with a fresh BBC in it.
Tom knows how much I spent on keeping it going. Thanks Tom.

Still have it 25 years later.

Olds>BBC>SBC.
61 with the Olds
71.8 with the BBC, best ever.
57 with the pissed off SBC, ALL DAY LONG. 7 fukkin years to the wood, junkyard parts are pieces.

Who wants to ski?

I've got a buddy that isn't on RDP, he is way into olds motors, prides himself on it actually and has gotten them to run very fast and reliable. Don't ask me how cause I don't know shit about them lol.

Tim (Timinator) wrote several articles , some might be in this area

You should read this article. It seems to be the go to for most of the jet boat Olds guys. The author posts here as Timinator. http://classiccustomboats.com/ ..
I looked earlier at that link for classic custom boats and another for vintage performance boats and the server cannot be found. I had seen the article on both sites years ago. Bummer.

I have it. But I probably won’t be able to get to it until maybe next month. Where are you located?

@77 SLEEK I think I found a semi-anonymous inmate who has agreed to send me the magazine. Your scans are what I was hoping to do with it. Maybe post your scans in a separate thread in the Tech section here? Folks are always looking for this old information, and the knowledge is getting harder to find all the time. After all, the Olds motors never die, they just get swapped out for something else.

Olds motors are fine in a jet boat. Use all the Mondello's stuff to make them live, run VR1 20W50 and don't hold them wide open for longer than 15 to 20 seconds. The 455 in my old boat lasted 18+ years with zero issues.

No. They are fine in a small jetboat. They are not fine in a larger boat unless your water is restricted to 35 mph.

As for not holding it WFO for more than 15 seconds, well that's why I'm currently in the middle of a swap for a 468 Chevy.
