Whew.....setting my alarm for Wednesday :D

so what did you all think

Street party: good, bad, awesome

Poker run: what did you think of the new starting format?

Shoot out: lame, alright, awesome, fricking cold :D

just to give you the insider look at it ,
Street party:
went off almost without a hitch and for the first time ever I was home in bed on the same day, I want to give a special shout-out to all that kept the RDP area so clean THANK YOU!!

Poker Run:
The spectator fleet seemed just a little light by maybe 10%, but also seemed to finally "get it" that the safety boats are there for your protection and the course lines seemed to be very controllable this year, I for one like the new format being that it's not all over in a flash and the opportunities for picture taking are far greater.

Shootout:
from the inside..we all are SOOOOO HAPPY, in our eyes that was the best shootout ever with a total of 67 single runs and one drag race style run, to me that one grudge match pass is going to forever change the shoot out, that was awesome the excitement of a real drag race was there, my heart was pounding and I had a ear to ear grin, if the insurance strings can be pulled that will be a fixture of shootouts to come.

So Proud:
After loosing our leader to a medical issue the day before the events started, I just have to say how proud I am to be involved with such a great volunteer staff at LakeRacer, everyone stepped up and dropped everything to drive in from miles around to fill the huge gap. it really put a tear in my eye to see that many quality people run to the rescue.

Well, I only took part in watching the poker run and I'm in favor of the old format. Multiple boats lined up and racing down the lake head to head. Seemed to spaced out this year. Also, I noticed that once the boats got their poker hand, they weren't going as fast back to the finish line. Still cool but it was better years ago imo

It thought the street party was great. I was one of the safety boats. I launched Saturday morning and my impeller went out. I was back on the water 1-1/2 hour later thanks to Barrett Marine. Those guys are awesome. The poker run was cool and the shootout was COLD. I had a front row seat patrolling in front of site six. The amphicar was cool. I only got flipped off once.

Street show - was a blast and hope it continues and next year we break the record for boats

Poker Run - as a participant I enjoyed the new format. The water was smoother IMO once you got away from the wind. Being able to take off after the channel to any stop was much easier then waiting I be released as a group. If you are a watcher, you might not like the format, but IMO is removed the racing association and allowed everyone to enjoy the run.

Shoot out - way too cold, my boat did not even touch water Saturday.

As a spectator I did not like the new format for the poker run start. If it's the same next year I won't even bother watching them. It's just like any other weekend on Havasu. The street fair was great(don't change a thing). The shootout- did not even go. We were in Parker and it was blowin good so figured it was canceled.

Street Show - awesome, great time, and enjoyed watching wife sing karaoke after at Flying X.

Poker run - raft up was fun, nice to see a clean safe run by all. Good times - a poker run is not a race.

Shoot out - I really like the way they have this setup now so people can easily watch and hear broadcast from shore. It worked for me that it was cold (this was the only way my guests would have been OK watching). If it were warm we would have been boating somewhere. I think if they can keep it early or even set it to a 9am start they will have better conditions.

Great job Karl, LHC30 and the rest of the crew. Few people know the tremendous amount of work you guys put into this thing all year long, and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Hats off to you guys :)

My heart skipped a beat when I heard about Jim, but he got back to me right away.

The deal with a poker run (any poker run) is - they have never been a "spectator" event. The best way to enjoy the poker run is to run it!

2. Poker Run
I did not like the new format at all. It really felt like a typical busy Saturday.

It was ok

Street party - awesome. My first time and one of the highlights of the trip. We hoofed it over from the Nautical, spoke to just about everyone exhibiting and they were all so friendly, and hit every bar as a bonus. Made a day out of it.

Poker Run - well played. We were in a 38' Fountain, liked the format, no lines at the card stops, very enjoyable.

Concert afterward - not so much. We had a room overlooking the stage so I heard most of it. Great idea, hope they do it again, but I did not like the band (no offense to anyone in the band who may be a member here). Just not my kind of music and of the raft up, I like to enjoy an adult refreshment during my concerts, would rather not have to deal with boat operation afterward.

Shoot out - too dam cold and windy, we skipped but glad to hear it went well.

All in all, except for the delayed start of the drivers meeting, understandable of course due to Jim's absence, the event ran like a well-oiled machine. Well done and congrats!

I took a public donation ride wednesday and I hope they continue with that..:thumbsup

I thought Jim Jr did a great job on the mic at the meetings ...

Parade start was a little confusing, most if the boats don't have or don't use VHF radios ;-/

Street party was good as ever.

Slept through most of the runs Sat. But I heard it was good to watch from shore.

  • Street Fair; was great this year with lots of vendors but didn't really get too far as I kept running into people I knew (that was a good thing). The check-in for the Poker Run at the Street fair was completely hosed and unorganized and we waited in line for over an hour to get our stuff.
  • Drivers Meeting; The Drivers meeting was completely unorganized. No one knew what their number for the run was and all the boat stickers were handed out when your name was called....this was a cluster IMHO and would have been much easier if they told you what your boat number was when you checked in and ehrn had all the numbers organized by groups.....then the drivers could have simply lined up infront of their group and asked for their stickers.....this would have saved the drivers/staff at least 30 minutes and endless frustration....hopefully someone will see this.
  • Poker Run; This was absolutely awesome and the ability to go directly to your preferred card stop was great from a participant standpoint......but I agree with the desire to see the big boys racing down the lake, only time will tell on this one.
  • Concert: I think it was not so good because of the choice of band as well as the wind and difficulties in anchoring to watch.......they'll get this figured out if they continue.
  • Shoot-out: The shootout was very good this year and well done from my perspective even with the cold and wind.
  • Awards Dinner: This was really focused only on the big guys and seemed rather disrespectful to the other 95% of the participants.....the food was mediocre at best and the announcer seems to be lost in search of an NHRA race to call......other than that the dinner was fine :rolleyes
  • The RDP after-Party was the highlight of the off water events and having VIP bands in the racers packages was a great touch :thumbsup:thumbsup

Like others have mentioned, the Street Party was Great :thumbsup:thumbsup

Poker Run start :thumbsdown

I watched from the shore at Site 6, witnessed a bunch of Spectator boat idiots crossing in front of PR Participants, several close calls :yikes
We felt that Buoy's should be used in this area along with a few more officials.

Didn't watch the Shootout, I was stilll hungover from the Street Party :D

Why is this event held the same weekend as the Laughlin Run ? it's already crowded enough and why not in May or June when it's a bit warmer ?

I'm glad I had really great friends and a couple of new friends to hang out with all weekend.

The street fair was exactly the same as it always is. A great place to interact with friends and check out the hardware. I found myself not paying much attention to the poker run when I heard about the new format (which I understand due to the insurance deal) I was turned off. at our raft up we didn't even know what was happening until team CRC came flying by and we were all "oh shit it must have started". A few of us grabbed our phones and cameras I just grabbed a drink watched. The big fast boats you could tell were poker runners. All the littler guys who came by one by one you couldn't tell if they were poker runners until you saw their sticker. I thought that kinda sucked. After the poker run we hit a Cove then the channel. We were in the channel till about 5 and we were parked where we could see where the concert was supposed to be. The wind picked up and we saw no one tieing up so we went in. I'm glad I didn't donate 100 bucks to mother nature.

Shootout morning our plan was to boat up to topock in sweaters. That idea was struck down quickly lol. As The storm that whipped up Friday after noon increased in power I decided to pull my boat off my beach just in case our beach got beat up. I didn't want to get my keel beat up to bad. As we woke up Saturday morning it was still blowing and pretty nippy. We picked up some friends in our car and headed up to topock for lunch when we got there the weather sucked and out of 12 of us I thing 8 bought sweaters up there. Lol. Chets girls up there pour a good drink and the food would have been GREAT but it was blowing a lil to cold and I couldn't eat my food fast enough to keep it hot.

As we sat there we all were talking about how we never really understood why this event happened at the end of April. I've always thought the bike run, DS, and cochella happening on the same weekend was stupid. April statically is not good weather imo. To many of the past years have had these cold/blown out issues. The water was tolerable but not quite swim in it all day tolerable. Just barely warm enough for the girls to hang it off the swim steps for a prop check.

We all thought DS would be better in may or June with warmer weather and warmer water.

Then there was the RDP after party.... what a great time! Thanks to all that made it happen. I don't think anyone had a bad time. I was a lil disappointed in the entry control. I saw A LOT of people without wrist bands. In the end the rdp after party is the best part of DS for me. Mostly because of the free booze :p but the people watching and seeing so many have a good time is the greatest.

In the end the event was just whatever for me. The people I hung out with made my weekend fun.

Can we get a rumor confirmed or denied?

It was floating around that this will be the last year DS will be put on. Is that completely or is lakeracer just gonna be out? Whatcha got?

I think you nailed it right here. Last year in the raft up the show was all of about 30 sec long. It didn't make or break the good time we were having. The new format seems to allow for a bigger variety of boats to run the event.

If the big boys run again next year, I would bet that they will put on a good show whether or not their start is controlled or not.

Sonya and I had another great time with this event. Always good to see old friends. We didn't get a chance to hang out much with the RDP group as our plans were changed dramatically when we arrived and heard Jim was in the hospital. Since we were old pros at this we just jumped in and started to fill in wherever was necessary above our already assigned duties.

Even though this has been going on for 16 years we always learn something new. Especially when the format gets changed. There will be some take aways from this year I'm sure and Jim will continue to morph the program to make things better for the spectators as well as the participants.

There are no plans for D.S. to go on "AS IS"
Will there be a 2015 D.S.? Absolutely
Will Lakeracer be a part of it? YES
Will you notice the changes? you might notice a few new banners ;)

changes are being made internally to the event to relieve Mr. Nichols of the constant burdens of D.S. and allow him to be returned to his family and pursue his duties as grandpa :thumbsup

This being our first time to Desert Storm made it a bit of an adventure for us.

TUESDAY NIGHT: We rolled into town around 7:30 and had to get Hammer the Keys for the Extra room I had, so we went up to RD's, and several people were hanging out in the Garage (Shocking I know :D). Had a chance for Terri and I to actually talk to some of the people we've met on the fly previously. We had a great time, and appreciated the friendly hospitality :thumbsup.

STREET PARTY: We didn't go till about 5, but had a good time looking at all the boats and vendors.. Cool stuff. Ended up in BJ's for a couple hours :drink..

CONCERT: Went over and tried to anchor, but it was so windy I gave up. I kept my $100 flag to use for wiping down the boat :rolleyes. I'm sure it would have been a good time, but Mother nature won this time..

POKER RUN: Ran down to Black Meadows (in a round about way :D) with Kurt and Kevin (Music to my Ears, and KEVNMCD). We rafted up with Shintooo and someone else in a nice fountain (sorry I didn't get his name). Then McRib comes along, and I guess wanted to do his own raft-up:rolleyes, so we watched them all float into the middle of the lake :p I though it was cool the way they were all spread out, youo had time to actually see most of them. A couple of good sized clusters of boats went by a few times that were on both sides of us :yikes.

SHOOTOUT: too cold and nasty, figured they were going to cancel.. them we heard them running. We walked down the street (Beachcomber), and watched them from the peninsula. 2FF and his lovely wife came by, so we sat in their car with them and watched... much warmer ;). we probably watched 20 boats or so run. It seemed like a good place to run it, but again this was my first time so I don't know what they did previously. Afternoon we ended up in the channel with a bunch of friends and family, and actually had a great afternoon.

PARTY: Fantastic Time (from what I can remember:p). Met a few new people, and saw a lot of ones I already knew. The ride home I'm still not sure about, But I remember telling 2FF he was gonna have to get me home, because I somehow managed to burn through $300 bucks I had in my wallet when I got there :headscratch: (I do recall a couple trips across the parking lot to HEAT... I think I bought some drinks). All in all, an Epic Success RD  Thanks

Overall.. great time with friends and family!!

Poker run-i miss the old format with the fast boats in the first group. That is what most of the spectators come for and raft up to see.The drivers meeting and the format in handing out the group numbers should be looked at to make it flow smoother like handing out the packages before the meeting and after have all drivers only sign a sign in sheet that they were there and would adhere to to all of the rules discussed.

Shootout-I like the location because it is fairly wind protected vs in Thompson bay.The event was delayed a little bit from weather that but did go off and ran smoothly.I didnt care for the start boat scenario. The start boat needs to be closer to the start buoy .Speeds were down due to the start and of course wind played a part to.

Our crew even picked up all the zip ties that hit the ground, and yet again all the trash that was left behind by people coming out of mad dogs late night. :D I'm trying Karl!

Poker Run:

There's pro's and con's to the new format.. I'm going to write a whole Desert Storm article here today that will be online later tonight.. Waiting on an e-mail from Jim and for some of our photographers to get more pics up to choose from.

Shootout:

Poker run-i miss the old format with the fast boats in the first group. That is what most of the spectators come for and raft up to see.The problem is that a certain sponsor has no balls to enforse the tough talk at the drivers meeting and uses his influence to push jump starter violations under the table because of his business relationships with a certain boat company and a former racer-both of who buy a lot of stuff from him...:skull

Shootout-I like the location because it is fairly wind protected vs in Thompson bay.The event was delayed a little bit from weather that but did go off and ran smoothly.I didnt care for the start boat scenario as certain boats got to start before the first buoy at over 40 mph and others like my self got to start between the first and second buoy. The start boat/flag guy needs to be impartial and hold every body to the same standard.Speeds were down due to the start and of course wind played a part to.

Overall a excellent production by Lakeracer llc and Jim jr. made his dad proud the way he stepped up.:thumbup::thumbup:

The street fair is always awesome. I think that is one of the coolest parts of the weekend, if not the coolest. I actually like the new format. Just because of the simple fact that my crew has a really hard time getting up on time to see the start. This year we were able to see a lot of the big boats run, were last year we totally missed it. But there is nothing like see all the big boys hauling ass down the lake at once. That is a sight to see! We didn't make to the shootout this year. Had a few to many drinks at breakfast and it was all down hill from there. :D

This is the main event I look forward to all year and will continue to keep going. Thanks for doing everything you guys do to make it happen!

We manage to go to a few poker runs around the country and this is one of the favorites
Street fair was fun but i have noticed how now it is becoming more vendors ( and not all boating related) and less boats
check in takes to long
Drivers meeting is a joke ( i understand that Jim wasn't there ) but it has always been very unorganized ( tell people ahead of time there group number, then have 10 people handing out the numbers for each group)
I think the food was outstanding for a buffet both nights. way better than most poker run meals
Because of the way the poker run was delayed we just headed down to havasu springs and didn't run with a group so made for a great run.
the awards dinner was boring as usual, need to get back to raffles and such to get people interested, The good thing was that Bob only was on the mic for a short time not the usual two hours :)
Didn't go to the shoot out had a great run up to Pirates cove instead.
River Daves party was bit chin

As a spectator I did not like the new format for the poker run start. If it's the same next year I won't even bother watching them. It's just like any other weekend on Havasu. The street fair was great(don't change a thing). The shootout- did not even go. We were in Parker and it was blowin good so figured it was canceled.

Pretty much what I was going to write

I know what you mean, I did DS once and felt really out of place at the dinner. Everything is about the big guys so now I just stick to Monster Bash

I think everybody needs to thank Bob Teaque and his family for the effort they put forward and the sponsorship money he pays to keep this poker run we all love going.
His family completly volunteered for the charity event on weds.and ran it, giving over 95 kids and there families rides. They dont get paid and have no financial rewards for doing this-they do it for the charity and it is there way of giving back to the boating community that they love.
Next time you see or talk to Bob and his family, please say thank you for the support.
It is very time consuming, stressfull and i wouldnt know where to start.

Yes I agree. I am a Teague fan and have seen the countless hours that family puts into volunteering at more than one event. :)

Basically you make a donation to the New Horizons charity and you get to go for a ride. It wasn't advertised to well and I was one of just a few to take part.:cool

4th year for the charity rides on Wednesday with New Horizon. First year you could purchase a ride if you made a donation. It was in the DS newsletter that Jim sent out in early April.
