I had to wait till I could go home and check… Zenni has worked for my poor eyes. Cheap as can can be so I was suspicious if they would actually be okay. 3 or 4 sets later I’m still buying them.

My buddy Jim owns San Gabriel Valley Optical. He IS the lab. Go there with your frames or pick out some of his. He makes the lenses right there.

Awesome one of a kind guy, boater and off-roader, been doing this his whole life. I’ve sent many family and friends to his shop. My mom called me last night after going to Jim and couldn’t believe how much money they saved.

Jim has done a ton for me and I want nothing more than to give Jim my business but I don’t need glasses so I spread the word when I can.

Cool video that his son made to promote business during COVID, it will give you a bit of insight…

So check this out...

I read the VSP policy real close and it says to order online from eyeconic.com for in network prices.

I register with my wife's info, pick my name from the family list, and boom, their prices are Crazy cheap! VSP comes through big time with them.

But...

I won't be able to try anything on, and I won't know what lens's I'll get. They do have Oakley's, along with a bunch of other name brands. I'd rather try something on first though.

I also found out Kaiser DOES take VSP, but they really didn't have any frames I likes.

So.....................

I found what I wanted on Len's Crafters website, and called around till I found em in stock. Long story short...

I'm getting Ralph Lauren frames with Essilor Lenses, but not with the Crizal coatings. To get that would have been an extra 150.00! Got the premium scratch resistant coating with the anti reflective finish. 515.00 retail. Cost me 154.89 out the door. Thanks VSP, you rock! 🤓

Many thanks to everyone's input on here. 👍

My final report...

Yesterday they told me my glasses would be ready in 2.5 weeks. I got a text today at 3pm, saying they were ready to be picked up!

I'm so stoked. Two cataract surgeries and months of healing, I finally have new readers, and my vision is crystal clear with these things. Totally worth the wait!

Many thanks to @chadzilla for the scoup on what materials to ask for, and everyone else for their info as well.

I'm stoked with my close up vision now!!!

I usually just use Kiaser, cause they have their own labs, and their lenses have always been first class.

But my wife has VSP, and I was thinkin about using that, to try and save some money.

Does anyone else use a quality lab? Who ever Costco uses is the worst lab ever!!!

Lenscrafters? What have you used that works? Just need some readers is all.

Thanks!
Readers, as in 1.5 or 1.75, etc? CVS, Dollar Tree, etc, or Amazon, unless you want to spend 400 bucks on progressive lenses. Luckily my eyes are still good but the wife just started going through this. After visiting all the name brand glasses places she just ordered like a 10 pack from amazon of the basic lensed glasses.

All the family has used Costco at one time or another. We have been happy with them. I also use Kaiser.

In the past when I needed glasses I use the doctors office to pick up glasses but because of the cost we now use Costco and never had a problem if there is a problem Costco always takes care of it

So let's say you were shopping for a new engine for your boat...

Would you walk into Teague/JMS or some other engine builder and say...

Gimme the cheapest fucking pistons you got! I mean the ten dollars each pistons. And I'll bring you some no name gaskets I found on Amazon, and some lifters I found on Summit. They were the cheapest lifters I could find!

No?

So why in the hell would you do that to the most important part of your body???

@chadzilla threw down with what we all needed to know. The guy and Lens Crafters showed me all the different lens/coating combos and how they work together. There are lots of different lenses and lots of different coatings. Not to mention everyone's eyes are a tad different left to right. Why would you not want to compensate for that?

There is a lot of good info in this thread. Thanks to everyone for helping me make the correct decision for the most important thing that I have. My vision!

P.S. My last set of progressives were well over four hundred bucks. They served me well. 👍

What many do not understand, and you said it,"everyone's eyes are a little different left to right", is the main reason to avoid buying the "one size fits all" glasses. Here is why. You will find that reading will slowly become more difficult and tiresome. Your eyes will be constantly trying to bring things into focus. This will result in you trying to find the perfect distance for reading or any close up work. This usually results in headaches and actually making you feel like your eyes are tired, much like staring at a computer screen all day. You only get one pair of eyes and corrective surgeries, as good as they are, still have risk. Don't fuck up your eyes!

30 years of VSP where I could use my $200 a year anywhere. Usually went to Oakley. Retired and went to Kaiser. KP gives 150 I believe and it's ever other year. Plus you have to use their lab to make. Bought what their 150 would buy for sunglasses. Get them in the mail and both lens are so poorly cut their are gaps between lens and frame. Go back and they take them to replace the lens. They mail them to me and now one of the lens prescription is really off. Need to take them back for attempt number 3.

That blows. Now I'm Really glad I didn't use them this year!!! Hope you get this mess figured out.

So I'm bringing this back up because Lens Crafters came through again...

I broke my frames. 100 percent my fault. I paid a few extra bucks for the warranty, so I went back to get em replaced.

They no longer carry the frames I had, so we picked out a different frame. Lens's had some minor scratches, so I ordered new lenses as well.

Since They made the choice to discontinue the frames, they waved the deductible on the frames! The new ones I picked were a couple bucks cheaper, so they credited me that money on the deductible for the lenses.

So for a grand total of twenty two dollars, I'll have all new glasses tomorrow!

I'm stoked with LensCrafters service!

… figured I was due for an eye exam about 10 years ago… I simply went to Walmart… The gorgeous young chick that did the exam wrote on the chart …right eye blind …essentially meaning no central vision in my right eye… Had her do it again same results…no clue how that happened???
… years before I had run into a guy in Van Nuys who made glasses… Walter… One day I went in there and he had this young lady working for him… Got to know her… She is from El Salvador and has a degree in mechanical engineering… Walter had a heart attack and passed away… The young lady bought out the business and moved to a new store front… She technically is capable of doing the whole process but because as far as I know she has not become a citizen as of yet…she is not allowed to be a practicing optometrist… Just an oculist I believe is the term… (can make glasses)…Kind of too bad because she is one of the best in the eye care field that I have ever run into… doubt that anyone can beat her prices and she probably has 1000 frames to choose from???…
… Pretty sure the name of her business is Clear Vision… In Van Nuys Ca…Owners name is Jennifer…tell her broken neck Willie sent you…lol…

My throw aways I have done in Mexico while I'm down there. What cost me $1400 up here cost me $125 down there. I have my glass lenses and my shooting lenses done at my optometrist office.

I use Oakley - they have a lab that does their own lense - work great, but they are pricey so insurance to offset is a must.
Oakley is owned by Luxottica, same company as LensCrafters and PearleVision.
They own a shitload of eyewear and optician brands around are basically a monopoly.

So you’re getting the same lab making lenses as LensCrafters, it’s not some special Oakley lab making lenses.

Not making a value judgement against LensCrafters.
I have no dog in this fight.

Yeah they own most eye/related brands.

It’s pretty surprising that anti-trust laws haven’t broken them apart.

Here’s what they own as far as eyewear goes:

And this is all of their retail stores:

My buddy is an independent optometrist.
Luxottica always pulls shady shit trying to put guys like him out of business.
