I usually just use Kiaser, cause they have their own labs, and their lenses have always been first class.

But my wife has VSP, and I was thinkin about using that, to try and save some money.

Does anyone else use a quality lab? Who ever Costco uses is the worst lab ever!!!

Lenscrafters? What have you used that works? Just need some readers is all.

Thanks!

I use whatever company the optometrist uses. My dad went to Costoc and we were happy with the glasses and cost.

I have VSP and have used Lens Crafters simply because I like the optician who works there. Their lenses are now crap, and I wont go back next time around, no matter how much I like the doctor. It took me 4 sets of lenses to try and find a pair that didnt have numbers and letter etched into them. No luck. The no-service customer service folks who work the retail side simply replied with "That's how they come now." My $500 glasses have lenses with numbers and letters in my line of sight. Lens Crafters sucks. 👎

I have VSP and buy glasses through optometrist. Not cheap!! The one I use now doesn’t have many name brand glasses. May get my prescription and buy online for sunglasses or desk/computer work.

I went to the Oakley Store and picked out the frames on my last pair. Had my eye doctor order the lens.

I was happy for about six months, they all the coatings started to come off. Couldn't even see out of them after that, and they wouldn't warranty them. F Costco. Hope you guys have better luck!

Don't ever get the scratch resistant or anti reflective coating. Alcohol, oil and many other cleaners will make it crack.

I am going to try Algodones Mexico for some new Ray Bans. Was just down getting some medicine, saw several shops that do prescription glasses. Figure it is worth a try,

I've got that on all of my glasses from Kaiser. Never had an issue. Working on cars all day, they got hit with chemicals constantly. Everything from brake cleaner, oil, coolant, you name it! lol They always outlasted my vision.

I'm retired now, so all I need is basic readers. :)

1st set of Costco glasses worked well... 2nd set didnt come out good from them. I even had them sent back to the shop and re do them. My optometrist said the prescription was off on the costco lens...Costco says it was accurate per the written prescription... This year i will just get them from my Optometrist and pay the extra cash. I have some really nice Oakleys that i cant use any longer due to needing a prescription, any inmates have any 1st had experience getting the lenses replaced with Prescription lenses?

If your just looking for readers, then I get mine off the shelf from Walmart, but I have even needs in both eyes (-1.5 for both) and nothing like an astigmatism that would require a prescription. They're cheap and between me and the wife, we keep a mason jar in the kitchen with about 10 pairs in there, and I have a pair or two almost everywhere I go (eg cars, boat, computer bag, office, backpack, garage). They're cheap enough to always have a pair within reach...

Sadly, I need a real prescription for working on the computer. The off the shelf one's just give me a headache. They work, but not so well. :(

Me too. Everything looked legit. I paid over $ 450.00 in parker last year, and the quality of the lenses is not good. It is pretty busy in Mexico right now, with snowbirds. Plan on going in April when it slows down. Will report back.

Been using Costco for years. Never an issue. My wife did blended lenses and couldn’t stand them. Went back to Costco, no issue. Had standard bifocals done and Costco refunded the blended up charge.

What I was told was...

There are only 3 or 4 labs in SoCal that make prescription lenses, and Kaiser has their own lab?

I know Kaiser's shit works better than anything else I've ever tried, but I was hoping to use my wife's insurance? Just wondering what else is out there.

I bought some Grorgio Armani sunglasses this year, and they are bad azz (super light, crystal clear and polarized for the water). Was hoping to get their frames in prescription, but their pricing is WAY above my pay grade!!! 😂

Readers, I use the .99 cent store next to Food City and have for years. Have them all over the house, some on lanyards some not.

We have VSP as well and just submit a claim with receipts after purchase. They are usually pretty quick with the reimbursement. Should be able to use Kaiser and the VSP insurance. Costco stopped accepting VSP a year or so back.

Costco or wherever you go for glasses starts at the examination and the resulting prescription. When you sit down with the optometrist tell them they gotta slow down and be patient. If you feel you being rushed tell them slow down and get it right.

I have vsp. I ordered a pair of oakleys from them. But also got a pair of ray bans at costco to try as they were 1/2 of what my doctor charged me for the oakleys. The guy is pretty cool and both my kids had there first exam with him and he was maken them both laugh and have a good time. Even thanked him for how he treated them during the exams.

@UltraLucky not true I just ordered my sons glasses on Friday and I have vsp. Paid for the second pair as he likes to lose things

Well can only relate my experience. last year they did not except my VSP when ordered and had to handle the reimbursement on my own.

I'll call Kaiser and report back on what they say about VSP...

Got my eyes examined yesterday, and my wife told me last night about VSP and said I will have to go somewhere else to use it.

Still wanna know what else is out there though...

Go to an ophthalmologist for your eye exams especially when you're getting older (you only have 2 eyes) instead of an optometrist.

As for glasses, we have progressive lenses (like bifocals but no lines). We don't cheap out on them - find a good local eyeglass place and try them

I've been wearing glasses since I was in 3rd grade and my dad was an optometrist, so I have a little knowledge on the subject. First off, you get what you pay for. If you go with the cheap lenses, do not expect top quality or longevity. Second, go to an Optometrist!! Costco, as great as it is for most items, does contract with all of their suppliers to create a less expensive model, version or whatever. It's how they beat everyone on price. When you go to a reputable optometrist, they will make sure that the product you get is exactly what you ordered and will work with the lab to ensure that. LensCrafters values volume over everything else. Most of the time their quality is good but not top notch. I have tried many different lenses over my 39 years of wearing glasses and have settled on either Varilux or Crizal lenses. They are hands down better than everything else. Maui Jims are one of the best out of the box sunglass lenses made so if it's just sunglasses, they are excellent. A high quality lense manufacturer will always have a warranty. I recently scratched the shit out of my everyday glasses and Varilux warrantied it no question. As far as the numbers on the lense, yea, most will have them. What matters is where they are placed so it does not affect your vision. Oakley makes really good lenses as well and will do prescriptions in most of their frames. Keep in mind, if you have a strong prescription, your choice of frames will be decreased unless you do not mind the lense being 1/4" thick on the end! Anyways, I hope this info helps!

Where do you guys recommend I go to get an exam / prescription only?
I've been putting off glasses for 3-4 years, it's time.
I found a frame that looks ridiculously stupid, if I'm gonna wear glasses I'm gonna own it. 🤓

Costco, 100$ or less usually. Tell them you want your prescription and also your PD (Pupillary Distance) "to go" (They may fight you on this because they will be aware that you aint buying their overpriced glasses!). Take that to Zenni.com and order away!

I get mine at Kaiser. They pay for that, no problem.

And now that I'm looking around, their 195.00 price for lenses and frames doesn't sound to bad? I already know their lens's work great. So maybe I should just stay with them?

If you get blended/progressive lenses make sure that they are done like hourglasses, if they are done in an upside down triangle fashion, it feels like you're looking through a glass with water in it every time you turn your head. Make sure you specify you want the progressive section done like hourglasses, that make all the difference in the world.

Quality is a problem at all levels. Then throw in there are shortages in just about all designer frames.

Good luck.

I go to a local Optometrist in Corona. Been happy with them for a few years. I hear Costco will only do your glasses with that anti glare bullshit. Their stuff seems cool....but my wife hates that anti glare coating. I've never had it. She says it seems to make the glare worse...and also attracts dirt and oil. Like her glasses are always dirty and are hard to clean. So that's why we don't use Costco.

I use Oakley - they have a lab that does their own lense - work great, but they are pricey so insurance to offset is a must.
You are spot on! Oakley does great lense work! I've had several pairs. Yup, they were all expensive! My pair I have now were about $750.00 but I do have a royally fucked up prescription and I have all the coatings on them.
