It depends on what you mean by book. Novel, its got to be about 10 years.

technical manuels, I've read 3 this month. I actually find them much more enjoyable then novels.

I understand. I used to read and write patents for a living and while I would have liked to read a book once in awhile for fun, my eyes and mind were so burned out after 10 hour days reading/writing for a living by the time I had a few minutes to read, my interest was zippo.

For some reason, reading magazines have never been a problem. Especially car/motorcycle/boat/firearm variety.

Now that I have move on career wise, i read "real" books again, but for the most part stick with history, political, and philosophy (sounds so boring I know). If I go camping, I always bring a couple of Louis L'Amour westerns which are very pleasant to read.

L'Amour should be used to bring kids into reading. I go back to him every few years, too.
Durant's History of Rome is on my to-do list as well.
My problem is that I have very limited bookshelf space, and tend to hoard books for some reason. If I aquire a book and enjoy reading it, I never let it go; it becomes part of my life. I have some that have been with me since childhood.

I've always been a reader. I looked forward to going to the library when I was little. I'd read about anthropology, archeology, paleontology, reptiles...I actually thought birds might be related to dinosaurs way before it was proven...

Then I found a sci fi book, "Slan" by AE Van Vogt...I thought that was the coolest thing ever! More sci fi to follow...then fantasy...my third grade teacher read "the Hobbit" to us in class because it was over most of the kids ability...I read it during the summer. During the 5th grade I read the hobbit and the LOTR trilogy in 2 weeks.

This helped me in school...read it, remember it, get a B+ on the test, don't do the homework...passing is passing, right?

I like reading history now. I can pick it up and put it down...sci fi I need to read it front to back without interuptions.

Westerns and detective books don't do it for me, although the historical types (Caleb Carr) are interesting. My two favorite sci fi authors now are Fritz Leiber and Keith Laumer.

A good series is "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George RR Martin. The first book is going to be an HBO series in April. "A Game of Thrones". An excellent read.
