Garage broke the other day, tell my landlord I can fix it no problem. He says no I’ll have my guy do it, don’t worry about it.
Still laughing about it the next day.
Glad my blink camera was working to capture the event.

In the early 80's I thought I could fix a garage door too, but I was wrong!!! I won't go into the details to show you how dumb and naive I was back then, but when the door spring came apart I almost got out of the way. It missed my head by inches and I thought, "Man that was close". Then I looked down and saw my left thumb laying in the palm of my hand. Short version was surgery followed shortly and they re-attached it. Not like it was, but at least I stil have it and it works mostly.

Moral of this is: I DO NOT fuck with garage doors any more, PERIOD!!!

Well, maybe next time he'll pay more attention to his job and the spring tension/condition? Maybe he'll get better training now? Who knows.....

Many, many years ago I was working for a friend that did roll up door maintenance for the pomona/onto. Fire depts. He had me servicing a 14' tall door @ ont. F.d. I was changing out a broken springs.
Over the phone he tells me to wind the spring xx amount. I was there solo. I do as instructed. I'm up on the top of ladder and I release the door and it comes shooting up/open. The door hits me in the chest just under my arms and carries me back hanging until it hits the track stops pitching me off to the concrete floor landing on my feet and tumbling onto my back. How I didn't Crack my scull open I don't know. I was very sore afterward. I call him and tell him what happened. He then says "did you put the same # of rounds in the spring as the groves on the drum?" I replied " no fucker, I put the # of rounds you in fuckin told me 30 min. Ago" silence..............
Click, I hung up. Pissed and sore
I painfully readjusted the door to hang correctly, finished the service and left. I refused to work on any more doors for him afterward. I did however learn to never put more winding rounds then grooves on the drum, typically less if the correct spring is used for the door as you always want a buffer. Good times.
I don't care much for roll up door work. Haha

I've hired garage door guys to replace broken springs at one of our city fire departments. there's alot of
"technique" that goes into a successful spring replacement and set-up. I watched them intently doing the
repair thinking the whole time "I could do this"....

I could recreate their "special" tools, etc. but when I comes down to it, thats work I really don't want to
try now at 62. I'll hire them everytime.

It ain't so much about the "I can do that" as it is knowing when to do "that" and when to do "the other thing". Knowing the tips and tricks on one project doesn't prepare one for all projects. At least that was my experience in the automotive field. All that said, I just installed an opener on my shop door and it needed to be adjusted first. I decided, "I can do that". It actually turned out good. But I was walking on eggshells the whole time very intent on not losing any digits or worse in the process. LOL

Bought my first house at 21 and I thought the garage door spring just needed a couple more rounds on it, that thing could have killed me.

There was a time when I would have thought that was funny, but not any more. As I sit here still recovering from a fractured leg, I can't help but hope that guy was not seriously injured.

It's been almost 10 weeks since I got injured and 8 weeks since surgery. I have another 4 weeks before I can even attempt to walk again. This sucks big time as I can't really do much with one good leg. For someone active like me, it has a major impact on your daily life.

Fortunately I have a desk job and can work remote. If the guy in this video was injured, he may not be able to work again for months. The way he was still up and hobbling around, hopefully that isn't the case, but it can happen real quick.

Heavy shit and springs demand respect....we all learn this at one point or another...this poor guy learned it today. I've learned it and been reminded of it many times over the years....luckily they were able to sew my finger back on or I'd look like @monkeyswrench

That was a crazy good save. I for sure would have let it hit the ground. Hope the guy is ok, garage doors are no joke.
Many don’t realize how heavy they are. Springs really make them feel light. I had a spring break on my old house door and I could barely get it open.I got help the second time.

Changed the springs out but was very careful while loading the spring too. It was double check twice but can see how people get injured doing the job when they ain’t careful.

Only real question, where's all the shit in yore garage? Mine is full of shit
Milwaukee toolbox, golf clubs, deep freezer, beach cruisers are all on the same side as the camera.

The open area is where cars get parked.

EDIT: Gun safe was lost during a tragic flood a few years back.

I'm pretty sure I looked just like that after the springs unwound and I looked down at my hand!!!! One of the spring bracket bolts came out and shot across the garage and stuck in the back wall. That damn thing was zinging!!! Funny to think back, but it sure wasn't funny then.

I laughed too...also that's probably some dumb ass shit I would do.

I remember being at Dumont with my buddy and he was putting his paddles on his sand car and the jack racked over and the car fell on the sand. A few of us were all trying to grab the car and hootin and hollering. My buddy that owned the car said, "it can only fall so far, why the fuck is everyone panicking?"

He wasn't wrong

I had a door guy out to service a door on a condo we were going to sell.

He must of been high as a kite !

He popped the release and the door slammed down and broke 2 glass windows ….
then he tried to charge me to replace them….

Wish I had video of that…

Ahhh nope!
Lucky I had pics and was standing there watching him

Most guys don't realize how heavy a quality door can be. Pulling the red rip cord can release all kinds of havoc. 🤣

Somehow they never blow a spring when the door is down.

Had a bad experience with the front coil springs on my 73 Camaro when I was 18 and damn near lost a couple of fingers on my left hand. To this day they are still really sensitive, wasnt much left holding them on when the spring compressor popped off while I was pulling the lower A arm.

I knew the potential danger of springs after that yet still messed with the double garage door springs on my first home back in the late 90's. I had 3' pipe wrenches on each end when I loosened the square headed bolts holding the cable guide pulley to the axle that also held the springs in place. I was also was wearing a full face motorcycle helmet. Springs have so much stored energy, better to let someone who knows what they are doing to mess with them.

My dad was in the garage door business for 50 years, before he passed he told me "Shit's gotten out of hand, any dumbass with a pick up and a pair of pliers thinks they are an installer!" 😁

Poor guy . . . that fucking sucks . . . we've all had stupid attacks.
Hope it's just a 'that hurt like a mother f'er' and not a serious injury.
