Packer for gravel? Gravel doesn't compact.
Not to disagree cause I am definitely a fancy pants guy who up till a year ago wouldn't have known... this size gravel actually can be leveled quite well with the proper equipment.... something tells me there are guys on RDP in that biz... my old neighbor Wyl built me his fitness area last year and actually built his entire yard with no previous knowledge of such and astro turfed and even poured a half court concrete basketball court. I was blown away... so I watched and learned. If you look back in thread you might find what his yard looks like... it was a dirt lot when he moved in 5 years ago. I call it a Home & Garden magazine yard Mexico style today.

What riverroyal is saying is in construction if you fill anything with dirt it needs to be compacted but if filled with gravel compaction is not necessary
The deepest fill I did with rock was 36 feet deep and then compacted the dirt that was placed on top and the proof that the rock did not need compaction is the dirt passed 95% compaction required on the job under the central utility plant on the job
Level the rock and pour the concrete

My only question - Is the dirt access road to the new spot traversable by hookers?
Could be the best question of the day.... as I settle in and get the beater jacuzzi up and running [if even possible.. praise God I hope so] I will need to hop in Fernando and drive down my dirt bumpy road about a mile and through my new armed guard gate to the sushi restaurant at bottom of hill to meet the Uber dropped ladies on the asphalt road. This unfortunately is just the way it will have to be. Casualty of rural living.

Not to argue, because I don't know anything about the subject. I do know that we tamp ballast (big gravel) after being laid down and we have trains run slow while it is compacting. Surely there's some movement that will take place before everything finds it's own level, no?
Gravel comes in so many sizes.... I think maybe my small stuff is real close to Pea gravel....https://ozinga.com/blog/crushed-stone-vs-pea-gravel-whats-the-difference/

Good to read the updates @HubbaHubbaLife and Happy to hear you're in a quieter place. Whatcha building/putting on that pad?
So the "Pad" idea was kinda a revelation after I knew I'd be leaving my last place where I had the use of a neighbors created fitness area. He kinda made that area in thoughts that folks might show up and be active in a beautiful setting and he'd enjoy their company... but he's a tough fit for most people growing up tough in mean streets of LA in 60s and has a lot of scars .... serendipitously the guy that took Sweet Thang in these last 5 months just happened to mention one day that he had a overage of outdoor fitness padding at his Rubber Factory he manages nearby. I literarily was simply taking him to dinner as a means of thanking him for the care of my dog and this padding subject came about. he is going through some accounting procedures internally regarding Mexican laws releasing these pads to a non client like school districts etc that they are built for but its coming together and they are 4'x4' and 3" deep and I'll be laying them on top of that level gravel and creating an area where I can train, sunbath or whatever. I'll most likely have to come up to San Diego to buy dumbells, bench and the like for weights but gotta say this last 12 months with simple dumbells has proven beneficial so who knows.

Depends on height of heels....anything over 4 inch maybe not.
Ha our local girls are mostly milk & diaper types not the Vegas girls you are seeing on your computer... if there are heels involved they are at the bottom of some military looking boots for rough roads.

I wasn't going to open that can of worms for the sake of sanity and keeping Hubbas thread on track.
Its all good fellas.... I dig the fact that my little fitness area and gravel use got us into the rock quarry sector ... just goes to show that specialties exist in all things.

Are you sure that isn't a new stripper stage you're building?
Hmmmmmm.... look at you mind reader.... lets just say its a 12' x 12' open space covered by the same rubber padding used by the school districts and community fitness outdoor areas.... yet looks out over the pacific ocean.

Geezus....sorry to derail the thread.
You can compact anything. But what is the area for.
Gravel compacted will settle over time meaning compaction is gone.
I park my truck on 3 inch deep gravel I placed. Yes it has pushed down and is tighter. Which is the same as renting a machine.
I can still shovel it. I can still fuck it up with truck wheels.
If you need to compact then compact. I wouldn't.
You can also throw some sand on top as you compact. It's still wont be compacted to solid but it helps fill the voids and slows rock shifting.

Compacting rock and compacting dirt is not the same. You can always pick up the top rocks as they might be wedged in but they are still not bound together.

Drive over it 20 times. Basically it will accomplish what you need.

Now back to the real topic. Lol

Just a final gravel comment and we'll push on.... my old neighbor built a similar fitness pad using same gravel and rented a gas powered compactor and he laid a cheesy 1/2" thick rubber pad over that and a year later after many yoga/ stretching sessions the indentions from my ass had made it less than flat so I've learned and am setting mine up as compacted as possible and then laying a 3" professionally manufactured rubber mat in 4' x 4' sections for best results. Little different than a gravel driveway. I have that already.

No idea what those words mean but I'm listening... was just too lazy today to rent that gas powered packer today.
Being "Lazy" for a guy not used to heavy manual labor especially at 60ish y.o. is completely understandable. Yore sore.
A "screed" is a board, typically a long straight 2"x4", 2"x6' etc. used to even out (flatten) the surface material you just placed. Technically it's used when pouring concrete to level the newly placed concrete to the top surface of the wood forms prior to floating and trowel finishing the concrete surface. In your case, it appears the screed board will need to fit inside your block "forms". It appears to me in your case you want the gravel a specific distance below the surface of the block forms. If accurate, you will want to nail/screw a smaller piece of wood such as a wood stake to the screed board to set that depth (2", 3"?) so as you drag the screed board over the forms you will drag the excess material along to other areas where low to fill in. You can use a square nose shovel or a landscape rake to drag/remove the excess material to lower areas to back fill the voids below the bottom surface of the screed board. When finished, you should have a nice even, flat surface to place your rubber mats on. If you can walk across it without disrupting the surface much, shoe prints, then you can likely be fine placing your 3" thick rubber mats on the gravel surface without disrupting the gravel underneath when you drop weights on them such as heavy barbells. If this doesn't make sense to you search up how to pour concrete and watch how they level the newly placed concrete to the surface of the forms. That should help clear up any uncertainties you may have.

Good description thanks... ah, so yes I've watched concrete workers use that technique so get it. Appreciated.

I was having a lazy Tuesday afternoon just sipping champagne staring out at ocean after a long mountain hike back exploring some of this new location with Sweet Thang when a buddy calls asking to stop by. I've got a gate thats guarded by pistol wearing guards so thought I'd see how visitors are handled by testing it on him. He's lived here 15 years so good test dummy. He got in so much for security but he did show a pic of me and Fernando to get in ha. He was going on and on about some afterparty spot and how I hve to see it. I'm all about an afterparty cause for years normal types have bored me to tears and I always identify with the vampires and later night types. So he and his friend stop in for quick bumps and they get itching to chase girls so off they go around dark.He texts me at 9 saying he's at the afterparty spot and I need to get there asap. Typically I'd say no thanks but i was a bit bumped up from his visit so threw on boots/ jeans and out into a nasty fog night I go. Directions take me just 2 miles north into a highrise complex with two 35 story towers that are quite modern... I push elevator fl 24 and doors open into what i soon understand is a ladies condo.... she greets me in the hallway takes my hand and walks me down a 50' corridor feeding into a massive room with kitchen, bar, air hockey table and two musicians amped up into speakers and mic'd up singing a Pink Floyd song very very very well! See vid. Turns out the lady is from New Orleans and bought the entire 24th floor 7 years ago after her husband was killed in auto accident. She built out the space to her taste and its 6500 sq ft of living area separated in two different styled motifs suitable to her tastes. And fellas her tastes are exquisite! As a true southerner I recognize a significant southern woman when I see one. She's special. So I'll be brief and simply say I stayed two nights never leaving for home and on Thursday she came down to my place so I could cook her dinner and she could get a change of scenery.... today I'm joining her as she joins her 41 year old son and his wife and their 5 yr old son from Temecula. They'll be driving an hour out to our famous wine country today and I'm excited to experience that area cause I've heard so much about it.... More to come I'm certain..... enjoy.
