We ship a little bit of freight and well this last bill came in via FedEx for 6 crates @ 7,500 lbs going from Ontario CA to Carlisle PA... Mind you this shipment took 2 weeks, crazy.

Anyways, the bill came in just shy of $20K and we get a 70% discount (off the inflated fee) so it was $6,000 but there is a line items for "California Compliance" of $1,920 on top of the freight cost. WTF is CA compliance?

Can someone school me?

Contributes to FSC as well as the inflated costs of doing Biz in CA.

Probably emissions compliance?

That's a hefty fee for one shipment! New profit center for FedEx @ that rate.

FSC, what is this? I don't have these fees getting truck loads from my broker.......

This must be like our paper shredding company adding a new "paper recycling fee" this year for compliance. Fucking shit...

FSC is Fuel Sur Charge. as you likely know , CA has some of the most expensive fuel in the country. Its pretty standard across the LTL carriers . The compliance charge also contributes to the the higher rate of Insurance as well as climbing cost of permits to be a carrier in CA...

I understand your dislike and disgust with this on your invoice, but you could compare it to McDonalds charging 18.00 for a big mac combo. The cost of doing business in CA is staggering.

My business is in Ca so i have an idea... But lets be honest, this truck didn't drive 2600 miles in CA... But to a cross dock in Bloomington then on another truck heading outside of CA.. So to add almost 2k, a 1/3 of the bill is fucking stupid...

I would agree.... I would look at rates from another carrier to compare...

So if you have a diesel commercial vehicle over I believe 15,000 lbs it has to meet emissions standards. I believe the oldest model year engine you can now run in Ca, for commercial use over 15K lbs is a model year 2010? If your engine is older than 2009 you have to buy something newer with a newer model year engine. A forced purchase and force phase out of equipment rather than a natural phase out. ITS THE LAW. So companies pass the cost of being forced to buy newer equipment on to their customers. The old equipment still has life in it but cant be operated in Ca. It does make it's way to less restricted states and countries and still pollutes the same, just somewhere else. Voters are to blame for this. They allowed these idiot politicians to become in control. A lot of ports require strict emissions standards to even enter as well.

It might be cheaper to rent a truck and fly the driver home. It would only take three or four days to get there.
No shit... My broker just gave me a price for a full box truck that I could load 40k lbs in and it was $6,000, the same price as the FedEx freight with no added "fee".

But to have FedEx say the cost was 20k and give a 70% discount is bull shit..

So waiting for the rep to show up..

So, little update... and little mud in my face

The CA fee was $20 but the fuel charge was 33% and that was $1915 (couldn't line up the number to the description). Still the fact that FedEx is saying it was $19,850 freight just to be given a 70% discount is crazy... Its like taking a aspirin in the hospital they charge insurance $500 for it.

I lost two Box trucks to this 2010 or over 14k gross. They flat will not send you tags. Really good trucks sold for pennies on the dollar.

BTW their Gross was 14,050. 50 lbs over. I'm only still here because I dont want to start another business elsewhere.

Might be time to open up a small shipping business from CA to the East coast. 👍 Run a standard GM pickup with a small enclosed trailer...... 🤷
