Those GM trucks, from the years Obama took over GM, have small engines that don’t last long. My 2001 Chev 2500 HD crew cab with the 6.0 has almost 300k miles, original engine, does not leak or burn a drop of oil.

good deals on the new trucks...but they are still Obama Trucks, and won’t last.
Hate to tell you, same motor architecture as your 2001 lol
4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2.......pick your poison
The only major change from a long-block perspective is they got more HP thru better cylinder heads, and some motors got cylinder deactivation which can be problematic with high mileage.

How many miles on your shitbox 6.0? lots of 300k motors out there, some running turbos ;)
117K. I bought it with 78K on the clock. The rear main seal I pulled out said “national” on it....hard to believe that it needed a rear seal before I got it, but anything’s possible I guess.

new plate/seal assembly has the seal lip facing the wrong direction...new GM design I guess. No leaks yet...we shall see.

A few years ago my 2008 Suburban engine went out with 170K miles on it. As I was in Bullhead at the time I took it to the Chevy dealer and got a quote for a new 100K warranty engine. For $6K it included new hoses , belts and installation. I thought for my purposes it was worth it considering a replacement Suburban was approaching $70K. Also, I checked with my buddy who works at a dealership in the OC and he felt it was a great price/they were $2K higher. Just my 2 cents worth.

As said. Normally Ls motors should be good for at least 200k. Even with lifter noise they usually keep going.
On my 07 6.0 at about 225k oil pressure started fluctuating at cruising speed, at 235k started having low oil pressure when cold first start, rev up then ok. Replaced oil pick up, oil pump, timing chain. Under $100 In parts. About 3-4 hrs. At 247k now going strong.

Edit: I've always ran synthetic oil, with pan off bottom end looked like new. No sludge, not even discolored, couldnt see any difference from old to new timing chain and gears.

you have 6.0. They go forever.

It all depends on your financial situation. Fixing an old vehicle will always be cheaper than buying a new one. I don’t need the latest and greatest...I need something that works...newest vehicle we own is a 2003...repairs (because I perform them myself) per year amount to less than a single payment on a newer vehicle. All depend on your money/time ratio. At $7000 for a new engine, that’s a year worth of payments, and truck will last another 4 or 5 at least. It’s always cheaper to fix it.

We have a bunch of brand new 6.0 that are loosing oil pressure or dropping a valve, freightliner bought enough 6.0 to keep them selling Mt 45 and Mt55 chassis with them until 2004 , apparently gm said they had three machines making presure relief spring and one of the machines was bad but the springs all went into the same barrel so it took them a while to discover the issue. As far as dropping a valve we don't have a clue

Obama had nothing to do with GM’s incompetence.... even though I disliked the guy.
I have the same shitbox 6.0 gasser in my truck that I just spent way to much time fixing oil leaks on....and fuck that engineer who decided to bolt the vent to the top most stud on the bellhousing. I’ll fight him.
It's ok, that engineer can easily fit his girlishly small hands up there without a problem.

I wanted to thank everyone for your input and help on this, especially @Bigbore500r for jumping on the phone and walking me through my options on the rebuild. In the end, I went with option 3. I found a clean, CPO 2017 Lexus GX460, which was under market value, serviced 100% at the local dealership, and had 3 years of warranty left. I then got a very good trade-in value on my truck. "About 40% better than I thought I would get, and at the high end of KBB" I just couldn't rely on the truck anymore.

I'll delete the chrome, lift it, run 33s, and get a truck when the economy turns around and I pay off the Tesla. Loving the luxury/simplicity of the platform so far, and hope I don't have to test the reliability. I've heard this is one of the more reliable engines around.

That vehicle is designed for a 25 year service life.
The 4.6 is infamous for poor mpg but million-mile+ reliability.
Literally, one of the most reliable vehicles you can buy [emoji106]

Tons of aftermarket stuff also, search for Land Cruiser Prado parts. Even King makes shocks for them.

I was getting 11mpg on my truck so this thing is an upgrade haha. Looking forward to having a V8 AWD 4runner for a bit. I'm looped into GXOR, IH8MUD, and ClubLexus and was thinking Ironman Foam Cell Pros or Dobinsons at first. I'd love some Kings, but don't know if it's worth dumping big $ into this thing. That was the purpose of not going full tilt into the Tremor.
