I signed a guy up to paint my trailer & dropped it off @ his shop last Tuesday. It's a Craigslist guy (I know - should know better) but it's a 20+ year old boat, so I'm not looking for a brand new trailer, just a decent paint job. He promised completion Friday, says he basically lives there & it would be done. So I give a call Friday mid-morning & no answer. Call a few more times & same thing - it's like the guy has vanished. Long story short, I've called the guy at least 5 times a day & gone by his shop everyday & absolutely nothing - it's all locked up. I don't care if it's taking longer than expected, the problem is there's been zero communication - giving me a pretty uneasy feeling. His shop is all enclosed so I have no idea if the boat is even still in there.

Here's where I'm at:

Called the property manager looking for additional contact info. Understandably, the guy says laws are very strict on that & he can't give me help. He says he has a feeling he knows who I'm talking about (he's in one of about 40 units), I say John & he says yes - giving me a more uneasy feeling.

Called the police & got the dumbest response I've ever heard. The lady says "so you took the boat to him", I say yes & she's says there's absolutely nothing they can do, it's a Civil Matter. I said "are you telling me I need to break into his shop to get my boat back", she says no you need to file suit & that's your only avenue.

Called the property manager back & politely said I understood the law for privacy but I need some help. The police are telling me to file a suit, but I'm going to go to his building & pop his door open with a jack long before I file a suit. He's understanding & has filed paperwork to obtain access to the property, said it will be Thurs or Friday before it goes through & we can get in. As long as I have registration he will release the boat to me.

So I'm stuck in limbo for a few days. I think my wife is going to call, wanting to make an appointment for some painting (maybe he?ll respond to that) & I could catch him over there.

Any suggestions :grumble:?

Defintely have a 3rd party call and make an appointment for some work... make the offer sound like he can make some easy, large, cash. THen show up at the appointment and make him make things right. Done this a couple times with flakes over the years....

I would go with the wife or a friend calling the number looking for paint work and setting up a time to go meet. Then reclaim your property. If that doesnt work I cant really post what I would do, but it would involve a couple of felonies.........

Sounds like we need a good ol fashioned stake out. I'll bring my baseball bat and a thermos of coffee. Im still trying to figure why you would want to repaint that trailer and ruin all that beautiful teal green? Hopefully your just having the teal touched up. :D

You can have CigAlert make you a custom bat with your choice of engraving to leave a nice mark on him when you're done :D

Definitely just repainting teal again. Figured it goes so well with a White, Blue & Grey boat :D. I think they're just tweakers. I gave them $250 up front, as soon as that runs out he's finally call me back. Going to have Andrea call over tonight try to make an appointment.

How much are they charging you to paint the trailer?

A little confused. Are you saying he was going to call you back if he ran out, or that he finally ran out and has called you back?

We have a law here in Cali related to Theft by Trick or Device. It is a felony (at least arrestable that way). I would be on the line with the Local PD Sgt or above and get something done.

We have to deal with these border line civil issues all the time. I understand what the PD is telling you in regards to a "Civil Issue". You entered into a business agreement with them and took them the item. At face value they did not steal it from you. Now that it has been some time and you are not getting any repsonse what so ever it is turning more into what I would consider theft to some degree with brings in the criminal side so your local PD can get involved.

Are you sure this guy didn't get arrested or is just out of town?

This sux! Careful on calling it in stolen. It would become evidence and may sit till the case is settled. Maybe 2 years in Fenix :D

Keep us locals updated .

Haven't heard a word from the guy, guess I typed that last one bit too quick. Deal was for $500. total, boat is still on the trailer. I'm guessing if he's using the money for drugs, he'll call when the money runs out. It really hasn't been too long, so I do feel like I'm jumping the gun a bit. It's the fact that there's been no communication what so ever that's worrying me. Someone has been to the shop though, heard the radio blasting inside one day, then not the next - neighbors don't seem to know a thing.

I would have been down there Friday at 5pm with bolt cutters and picked up my boat/trailer.

What kind of paint job did you want? For $500, I'll go to walmart and buy some sand paper, and 10 cans of cheap paint.

I'll need the $500 up front to cover expense's

Ya, we can do it with the boat on the trailer

I'd be a little freaked at this point:thumbsdown

Boat on the trailer was a hard decision. My boat sits high on the trailer, so most of it is easy to get to & easy to wrap the boat because theres only 2 bunks (which I'm also replacing). On the bright side, I'd be racking up fees @ Pleasant right now if I put it in a slip.

Go by and tape the doors with cellophane tape to see of anybody is coming or going. Tape at the opposite side of the shackle on a rollup; and at the top on a regular door jamb. If the tape is broken, you'll know he's been in/out.

Also, check your PM.

Thanks to C-2, he's helped to put my mind @ ease a bit.

The guy was arrested 2 days after I dropped the boat off, on a misdemeanor count of failing to pay a fine. Tomorrow I'll try to find a release date, but still try to get my boat back on Friday.

Probably off topic but... you can get a boat trailer powder coated for less than $500. Personaly, I'd rather have a trailer powder coated than painted.

Face get your stuff back. Enjoy the season then check on a slip at Saguaro for a month and get your trailer done right.

When you get your bunks done, PM me Theres a company out here in Chandler that totally screwed up on mine and my inner tunnles are damaged because of them.

Thanks.. I'm actually doing the bunks myself, done a few in the past & these are really simple - minus the fact they're 20'. Are the tunnels scraped up, or deformed? This thing will probably be going down the road before too long, have my eye on the next boat now.

Yeah, let's have him file a FALSE police report. That is a great idea.

That sucks. Lots of whisky tango out here. Serious hill billy types.

Does anyone know who can paint #'s on boats out here? I'm in Scottsdale.

I have never heard of someone doin it that cheap.. I've always been told it would be around 700-750 and you have to dropthe trailer off on a flat bed, less wheels / spindles, wiring, lights etc.. It's kind of a pain In the ass.

Pc withstands rock chips better.. But not as good with uv and fades in a couple years.

Anyone know of a guy in LHC? The boat lives there year round, but I would love to get the trailer re painted or powder coated. I prefer not to take the boat off the trailer. Some shops will block the boat and store the boat for you.

Also, I don't have time to sit in front of a shop with a bat which is exactly what I would do.

Next time anyone contacts a guy through Craigslist, make sure he has a business license. Just like don't hire a contractor without a license or insurance.

I haven't found that PC fades, not more than paint anyway. I believe inferior materials lead to fading the most. Ours was done in a 3 step, polished, semi-translucent base & a clear coat - came out really good - only been 2 years but shows no signs of fade. It's basically just plastic.

A trailer would be allot of work. It would have to be stripped down to nothing as many of the parts wouldn't hold up to the heat (seals, brake lines, wiring, etc.) & you would have to find a place with a booth big enough to fit the trailer. I'd recommend calling your local shops & see if their booths are big enough before I wasted much time on it.

You've been calling the wrong powder coaters. Here are the correct powder coaters to call: :D Powder 1 in El Cajon (619) 588-9200.

Used boat trailers vary in condition a lot, but for a typical 22' long jet boat trailer with typical (for a freshwater jet boat trailer) minimal rust on the trailer, with the owner of the trailer removing the boat, the lights, the light wiring, and the bunks, $500 - $600 OTD powdercoated any basic color (i.e.: no candies or multi-colors at that price). They do great work there. Chris, the owner of Powder 1, even likes to trade and barter.

I believe powder coatings of years gone by are quite a bit different than the powder coatings of today. The newer stuff holds up a lot better, including fading, than the powder coatings of years ago. If you decide to call Chris he can fill you in on any particulars or concerns that you may have.

An update.

Turns out the guy got popped for a DUI on Saint Pattys Day, then had an outstanding fine on top of that.

He really feels like shit about it & keeping me updated a couple times a day now. He was trying to turn it around in a day (yesterday) but I let him off the hook, told him to take his time & do it right & I'd give him a few days.

Working to my benefit now, he's going to install new wiring / lights (I'm buying parts) & repainting the mid section on the motor (same color as trailer) included in the same cost. :D

If it turns out decent I'll post up some pics, if not I'll probably take it to 460's guy.
