Anode rod is on the top portion of the heater, you'll be able to use a socket to remove what looks like a plug.
Newer WH's, it's not a separate plug.. like the old days. Its under the hot (outlet side) now.

For the OP, if you have a Ferguson dealer near you try them. Bradford White.

Average price in the Southbay is $2200 for 40H natural gas. Installed to today's codes. Mike diamond smells good but $4700. Few other guys I know local $3500.

That price includes bonding hot and cold. Sediment trap. New gas supply line. New water supply lines. Haul away the old.

You had a older rheem which is good the news are known to be junk. This post from earlier. View attachment 1332724

Mine is electric, but I just bought the same 50g Rheem that I had before, seems like the old model number is discontinued, but the one I got had all the same specs and connections....it literally was plug and play...all in, with tank and hoses was like $800...oh and I have to figure out what to do with the old one still but I am pretty sure our trash service will pick it up, I think the allow like 2 bulky item pick ups a year...

Crossing my fingers that its not junk....time will tell.

Just did a Rheem today as mine took a shit. Photocopy the receipt put on it a ziplock taped to fridge and original and a second copy in a filing cabinet. Mine was built in Nov of 2017, so no receipt it goes off manufacture date plus one month.
New one was manufactured in July of 2023 so i basically F’d myself on the warranty.

Electric don't have the gas valve issues. I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't let it go empty and burn out the element.

Leave it out front with a free sign on it. If no one takes it change it to $10 the next day, and it will be stolen. 😉

Bradford white.

If you have to I would get a AO Smith from Contractors Warehouse. Before lowes or HD.

Rheem from home depot is junk. Last week I had to change 1 out as they took forever to warranty the gas control valve. Now I have the valve but already swapped in a Bradford white. Home owner wanted his tenant happy. $2650 with new circ pump. Rheem was not even 5 years old. They wanted tech support to try and diagnose it over phone before sending the part. 3 days a few hours and tech support never answered or called back. Finally the lady just sent the part.
I just bought a new valve at Ferguson and sent them the receipt for reimbursement….wasn’t about to wait a week or 2 to get the valve sent from them.

Was fairly painless.
