I just about completed our Christmas shopping for the kids.
Maynard wanted a Marble Roller Coaster.
I remember them, they're back and still as cool as ever.

When my daughter was little and still into Nicktoons,, I was walking through the mall and stopped by one of those Sharper Image kinda stores. Used to be all kinds of them in the malls.

Anyway, they had the coolest Nickelodian Desktop Clock.
It looked like the Nick slime machine with Nickelodeon written in fiber optic neon on top which made it cooler still. Also, a blue glowing fiber optic neon bent antenna on the top of it too. All kinds of gadgets on the clock,, it was a Killertoy.

Damn it was cool. In addition to all kinds of cool factory sounds it made in high quality audio, it had 30 differnt alarm sound settings from a grouchy guy yelling get up!, to a factory Steam whistle, locomotive horn,, on and on.
They sold out of a pallet of them in a day and that was that.

Nick released a much cheaper, very crummy imitation version of that clock but it was nothing like the one I got. No where near the quality or nearly as cool.

Any remarkable gifts or toys from over the years?

Hmmm...

'92 - RC Chaparral Villain IV w/ twin surface drives - fried speed controler.
'93 - Radio Shack RC Offroad Car (it broke within a month)
'94 - New Bike - havent ridden since '96
'97 - Craftsman Tool set
'00 - Golf Clubs & Apparel- havent played golf since '03
'02 - Hand held GPS - not used it in 3 years.

My take is as we get older the coolness wears off :hmm

hmm...

Coolest I ever got?

In the year of our Lord, 1963 (A.D.), I was 5 years and two months old at Christmas.
Upon sneaking out to the Christmas tree, I found a brand new Schwinn Sting Ray, metalflake bronze in color, with the bannana seat. There was a tag on the snow-white grip at the top of the butterfly handlebars that said, "To Jeff, from Santa."
It just don't get no better than that. Dad had to tape 2x4 blocks to the pedals so I could reach 'em, but I was upright and the coolest kid on the block that day.

I guess the best we ever gave was a Suzuki Lt-80, then a Honda TRX 250X.

But man, that Sting Ray....

Would like to hear that. They have them avail at COSTCO, but we have no room for it, or I'd pick one up.

Not only did the Sting Ray look cool,, but remember when they were new you could smell the fresh paint and rubber tires that smelled cool too.

One of our kids is a guitar prodegy, and Maynard is picking it up.
Love the Strats. Over the decades, often imitated, never duplicated.

I still have the frame, wheels and original tires, crankset chain and pedals for the bike.
I need a front fork, headset and bearings, handlebars, seat post, bannana seat, seat riser, chain guard and I am gonna paint 'er and stash it fer my grandkids I expect to have in 15 years or so.
Anybody know where them parts might be available for less than an arm and a leg, lemme know.

I lusted after one of them Honda Trail 70's, then moved on to a Yamaha mini-enduro.
I'd like to find a trail 110 now.

The Pacman story....

Around 1985 or so, I bought a Pacman machine from an arcade for my little brothers. I was keeping it at my house so they wouldn't see it before Christmas. Well Christmas eve rolls around and we had an open bar at work. I end up staying there until around 11pm, by the time I got home my roommates had left to spend the night at their parent's houses. So I am stuck with loading the Pacman game in my truck by myself. I back the truck up onto the front lawn (in about two feet of snow) I then manage to get the machine out on the front porch and start to ease it down the steps. On about the fourth step, my lack of balance and coordination get the best of me, I fall backwards into the snow and the pacman machine lands on top of me and slides just far enough under my tailgate that I couldn't push it off of me. I laid there and thought "so this is how it ends huh? Trapped in the snow in 20 degree weather by a fucking video game on Christmas" I finally got out from under it and got it in the back of my truck. By then it was around 3am, I drove to mom's and pulled my truck in the garage, go in the house, thaw out and had barely fallen asleep when my little brothers woke me up. Now originally I had planned on having it standing by the tree, plugged in and ready to go. (Change of plans) I took the little bros out in the garage and showed them the game and told them what had happened. We unloaded it, plugged it in and the damn thing still worked.
God bless us everyone :beer

My best present was when i was 14 or 15 and for Christmas my Dad wrapped this worn out torn up phone book for me. All i wanted was a phone for my room...it took me a few to figure it out. :D

Got invited a few weeks ago (December Guard Drill weekend) to go goose hunting with my millitary boss (squad leader), another squad leader, and one of my own team members (the guide).
None of my 12-gauges are heavy enough (2 3/4" Browning A-5 or 3" Remington 870), so I was forced to purchase a proper Canada Goose howitzer.

Browning BPS, new-in-box, in 10-gauge, 26" barrel, 3 1/2" chamber of course, milo-field HD-4 camoflage pattern as well. Maybe take a couple of pix tomorow after some more clay-busting practice.

She points and shoots as good as my trusty A-5 has for the last 25 years.

Told my wife it was Jack's fault for inviting me (my boss, MSgt Reynolds).
We go Jan. 1/2.

I got the Green Machine Shadow version; it was the same thing but it had a wing on the back that of course made it faster :D

My bro was into racing BMX so one year (I think '85) my parents got him an SE Quadangle and all the gear he needed to race; I guess they thought they had to get me a gift of equal value, so I ended up getting what seemed to be about $400 worth of Star Wars figures and the like. It was right after Return of The Jedi came out too, so there was a shit load of new characters. That one was pretty badass.

I remember when I was 7, I actually got everyone in the family a present with only $20. I thought I was the shit.

The best was the year we spent in a cabin up in Big Bear. My Pops had a '79 Chevy C30 with a shell on it; my parents tried to hide all the presents under a moving pad in the back where we were riding. It took us all of about 30 seconds into the trip to figure it out, but we played along. Sure enough, XMAS morning SC came and dropped presents for us. I remember posing the question of how ole St Nick knew to find us in the cabin. Can't remember any particular toy that year other than a Red Line racing game. It was a handheld game that was supposed to simulate drag racing. 'Bout wore that thing out. Good Times.

I cant remember the the year but it was early 70s
grape.jpg

but it was Pea Green and chrome front & rear fenders. Seams like all the kids got one that Christmas. We build ramps out of anything and jumped them till the rear seat braces started to bend.
I got a friend who restores them in Culver City. His garage looks like a early Schwinn Shop. Nothing top that bike.

Cave, as luck would have it, I am trying to restore my 63-1/2 Stingray, a standard model I got for Christmas when I was five years old. I have the frame, the wheels, the crankset and chain, and not much more. If your friend has a parts bike or knows where I can get parts without robbing a bank, please foward me his contact info. I think I'll have to buy a complete but beat bike to cannibalize for parts, don't mind spending a few hundred bucks but some of those Ebay people are off the hook...

One year, Santa brought my sister and I, 10 speed bikes. She is 2 years older than me. Mine was a guys bike, and hers was a girls bike. They had the same size wheels and tires.
Fast forward a couple of weeks after christmas, I had bent both the rims on my bike, using it to jump, because it was so fast!!
Well, my mom and my sister went shopping, so I put the bent wheels on her bike, and the "good" wheels onto my bike.
I am sure she figured it out, but she never said anything about it....:D:D

This was hand made by my mom and my step dad two years ago. He made the board and she carved all the pieces on a scroll saw. The best gifts are not bought.:thumbsup The dark colered pieces are walnut the light one is canary wood.
