Graduated in 93 from a small school in the mountains. Mostly old Subarus passed down from the parents. Only a handful of car guys. Fastest was a bitchen mr2. Bitchenist was my buddies 66 Cadillac Fleetwood, black on black. Another dude had a sweet 60s Bonneville. His dad had a auto shop and that thing was a monster 0-60mph. Str8.
The few gear heads were running Cjs, scouts, high boys and a couple blazers. Snow country.

I was Upland high Class of '85. Only about a dozen cool cars on campus at least imo.

Popular for that time cruising were cal Bugs, mini truck clubs and a few of us had 60's-early 70's muscle cars. I wasn't into the mini trucks and bugs or newer cars in general because they were mostly slow. Back then 13's were semi respectable and 10's were real good. We street raced often on Rockefeller, and G street, Mission and later on Philadelphia (3M). The mini trucks would follow us in to watch. They were irritating. because they wouldn't stay put. They were constantly coming and going which was an issue. We ditched them many nights because of that. We cruised Market st. in Riverside, Ball rd ending at Angelos in Anaheim, A&W on Holt in ONT, down to Chino Riverside dr Del Taco, In-N- out LaVerne on Foothill, Grand in Covina and I recall Fairway and the 60 (Rowland Heights?) there was as Burger place meeting spot for later racing.

We raced a lot of places that I don't remember exact locations and also ran Riverside Raceway, Carlsbad Raceway, LACR, Terminal Island when it opened.

A few friends cars from back then. 2 of these guys worked at the Ontario Super Shops for a short period.

Grew up in a small mountain town also... The "hot car" at the time was Toyota 4x4 pickups. Accept no substitute. Beyond that it was either a Ford or Chevy pickup with a built engine. A few of the car guys in my group got into early 70's Pony cars.

Then there was some yahoo that though it would be cool to build a 4x4 using a Mid-70's Tbird or Mercury Cougar. As an 8 year old I thought that was the coolest car I'd ever seen. Don't know what happened to that guy... 🤔

You were 10 years ahead, but all the same places. The street in Roland/Industry was Salt Lake I think. The mini guys had mostly been replaced by the tuners. Sounds they were the same disruptive kids with a short attention span 🤣

Isn't it funny we remember the cars, no the names. Still the same today, I know people by their boat/car.

0Supra, mr2, nsx, 240sx etc. Basically 90s era was dope for
Imports.
Had a 91 300ZX TT and a Mitz 3000GT VR4, 90's was the Japanese era for sure. My 300ZX had the Stillen mods, I crushed the 5.0 crowd easily.

The group I ran with either had 60s mustangs or early 80s 5.0 fox bodies. I ran a 67 in high school.

We'd be out racing every weekend. When we were in a 5.0 and lined up next to a buick grand national, we knew we better have our A game! That's when it got quiet and focus was key.

Short, weird story:
In 94, my brother bought an 83 Mustang "Turbo" GT...non-intercooled predecessor to the SVO. He started picking up "Turbo & High Tech Performance" magazines. At first I looked at them like he was buying gay porn. I'd hide them when my friends came over. Then, I started reading them, and actually learned some stuff about EFI and fueling.

There were always ads for "RS Akimoto" with a red awd Eclipse. One day, the cover was off a car down the street, and the garage was open. The car was the Eclipse. He lived a block away! He was really nice, popped the hood and let me look around. He'd just won some import vs domestic thing in Vegas.

Funny thing though, in the garage was his dad's GNX...

Graduated '93 Had a 79 Ranchero with a 429 and C6 out of a 72 ltd. Put a cam and manifold and big Holly on it with a shift kit. Shit'n in tall cotton when I got my CD player, 1000 watt amp and 2 10's stuffed in the compartment under the front of the "bed" behind the back seat lol. Now I have to laugh at the No Fear tank, looking like white Eazy E with a mullet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The super cool kids had obs "sport trucks" from MK Smith Chevrolet.

Anything GTO 64-70. Mustangs, K cars 64-66, 390's 67-68. K Fairlanes and big blocks. Mopars, Max wedge, Hemis. Chevys, big block Camaros Novas, El Caminos and Chevelle's. 350HP small blocks and all big blocks. I belonged to a car club, "Performance Inc." in the San Fernando Valley from 69-72. A lot of drag racing. We drove these cars every day and raced on weekends. Canoga Park Bob's was our meeting place on Wed nights. Vietnam era so when the lottery system happened, half the club was gone within a week.

I graduated in 75. San Gabriel Valley.

In the HS parking lot, there were mini trucks with L60-15's on the back. One guy had a Luv Truck with a SBC in it.

There were Ford and Chebby vans with Cragers and L60-15's on the back also.

Then a smattering of Real street street cars...

Doug's ElCo with a killer small block and 4:11's in it. Keith's ElCo with a BBC. Tommy's 302 Camaro, 68 I think? Can't remember who owned the Road Runner with the tunnel ram sticking outa the hood? Conrad's bad azz Bronco, root beer brown and white.

We would all end up cruising Valley Boulevard pretty much every Saturday night.

Mine was a 67 Mustang with a built 406 FE and 4:11's. Only lost one race, cause I backed out of the throttle. I knew there was a big dip up ahead, and the other guy didn't. Didn't end up well for him.

I used to drive real slow past MK because they always had about 5 or 6 parked right in front of the showroom.

Came close to buying a showroom condition 409 Chevy. Sprung the $$ to have it inspected and the expert said it’s the best fake he ever came across.

I graduated in 1975, for guys it was all about 60's and 70's muscle cars if you could swing the $$.
Lots of kids had hand me down family cars, or if rich, daddy's bought a lot of Pintos, Gremlins and Novas.
I had always worked and saved my money so when I turned 16 I bought a $300 64 Chevy truck. My senior year I sprung for a nice car, not too bad for $1525.

Buddies sister in highschool had a turbo AWD Eclipse. That thing was a blast.

Their dad was custom/exotic car dealer. Like the OG Ferrari from Magnum PI, George Harris Hot rods, crazy built up Porsche's and everything cool in between. 3 warehouses full of cars. We used to get to drive cars to and from the auctions for him. His kids were always driving something cool.

Read with interest the thread started by H2O tole concering square body GM vehicles. I grew up in Michigan. Square body meant nothing, would rarely see a low rider. Late 50’s, into 60’s all about drag racing. One would pick up a 55 Chevy/Ford for a few hundred V-8 manual trans.

First thing put a floor shift in. Then go to junk yard find a 4bbl manifold with a carb on it.

Then into the garage pull the intake, heads, drop the pan. Clean everthing maybe take the heads in for a .030 cut add a little compression. New cam w/lifters and springs was about 3 weeks wages at $1 an hour. So that was optional.
Put all back together it was off to Woodward to street race. Maybe a trip to Detroit Dragway where a low 16 or high 15 time was rockin.
Woodward was where the money lived, the Totem Pole or Teds. Kids parents there bought their babies last years drag cars from GM, Ford or Chrysler, dealers.

Usually a quickie paint job but the sponsors lettering, Motor size, drivers name still came through.

Could of bought a brand new 1962 409 Chevy but that was years wages.

I was poor somewhere else.
That is exactly my story too. I grew up on SoCal, in the S.F. Valley and we played on Van Nuys Blvd. First car was a 55 Chevy, first thing I did was pull out the power glide and but a 3 speed stick set up from a junk yard, put it in with a Duntov 3030 cam and solid lifter and a used 4 barrel and manifold. The good old day.
