Long story short we were looking for a basic sedan for everyday car use but With the girls so into snowboarding now we are spending more time in the mountains. This has gotten me thinking about getting back into a 4runner. Have any of you motorhome guys flat towed a mid 2000s 4runners?

What all is needed to flat tow a vehicle behind a moho?

4-runner you would need a drive line disconnect to flat tow. Or just unbolt the drive shaft yourself each time.

I used to tow a Tj stick shift behind my fifth wheel. Jeeps work well in this duty, and have a ton of support in the aftermarket world for this kind of thing

Bought a 2019 Chevy Colorado WT (cheapy work truck) 4 door in 4WD from CarMax. Set the transfer case to neutral and go. Wired the lights with diodes to run tow lights from MH.

The traditional jeep TJ. I use a roadmaster tow bar attached to an aftermarket front bumper.

'16 GMC Canyon, Mini Max....

Double duty.... It's my toad and tows my boat...

Previous had a Sierra 1500H/D for the boat tow and a Ranger for a toad..

Condensed when GM brought out their Canyon/Colorado diesel

My Dad flat tows a 1991 Jeep, 2014 Saturn Vue and a 2004 Dodge Ram. I think he uses the blue ox.

Jeeps are pretty easy to flat tow. They have non locking steering and just need transfer case in neutral
The basics:
* Tow bar and mount
* braking system
* Tow light kit

Here is our setup. Wasn’t planning on towing the truck, but we already had it and Ford makes it way too easy to flat tow.

We use this brake controller: https://www.blueox.com/product/brk2...0h5mofFVGmTEG_5wXdL-2A7X_F9Wq-pUaAt8nEALw_wcB

Roadmaster tow bar: https://www.amazon.com/Roadmaster-5...ords=roadmaster+tow+bar&qid=1672667692&sr=8-5

Added a diode kit for the taillights and lights were handled.

This past summer was our first time using the motorhome and road tripping. Did 3200 miles with the family last July and could not have had a better time!

2021 F150.
Perfect for our family of 5, has pleanty of room, launches the boat with no problems and we can also take it out off roading when we go to Mammoth or other places. Second F150 I have owned and really like them, kind of the perfect truck for me.

I couldn’t agree more. I have been very surprised with the truck while having kids.
Does everything you you stated very well.

I tow my CJ7 occasionally.
465/205 trans/tcase combo, makes towing it easy.

when flat towing, do you NEED one of those electronic braking systems in the towed vehicle?

Just wondering if it is required, or if that is just for more piece of mind?

Required in many states, usually contingent on the weight of the towed trailer/vehicle. Motorhome Magazine used to have an annual report with all the available tow vehicles as well as the laws by state. I think they’re defunct, but you might find pdf copies available online.

Me and a few others on the site have had success with this tow bar setup:

It’s a non-electric setup that mechanically pulls on the brake pedal when actuated. I’ve used it on a Jeep TJ and a Subaru Outback with success. Not sure I would use it with a bigger vehicle, but great when not wanting to do an electrical pedal or a bunch of modifications.

What sort of Motorhome is going to have the privilege of dragging the toad? That really helps determine how successful the vehicle will be as a TOAD.

Tow our 2008 JK and 2012 Ford F150 behind our Phaeton pusher. I have tow brakes on both vehicles.

I am really trying to get a Fleetwood Revolution 40 LE. As soon as mine sells we will get more serious about it but we need another vehicle so that is why I got this thread rolling.

Finally got around to flat towing our truck on another trip. I didn’t see the point of buying a new vehicle so I upgraded the front number to have pull points built into it and pull a 2011 F250. I was a little sketched out at first and now we have 100s of miles pulling in. No issues . I can haul a ton of additional stuff in the bed of the truck for the long trips.

As much as I would really like a jeep it’s not practical for me as I don’t see myself flat towing that often. Mostly offroad toys in the enclosed trailer is what I will be doing. That being said I’m setting up my 06 Duramax. Seems like a pretty simple setup. Got my blue ox on FB for 100 bucks. Was going to fab the truck attachment points but it looks like it’s going to be better to just buy them. I just installed a diode kit for all the lighting, super simple. Then the braking I’m still undecided on that part. Probably whatever I can find on FB marketplace as I don’t see myself flat towing often.

Another guy I know set up a jeep and it was literally a matter of just plug and play for most everything from lighting to the braking system. The blue ox hooks to the aftermarket bumper. That route is by far the easiest from the research I’ve done.

Whatever you get do some research on prior, I was very surprised some of the vehicles you can and absolutely cannot flat tow even though it’s 4wd.

We bought the Gladiator specifically so we could;
Wheel It
Tow it
Tow with it
And daily it.

Works well in all situations. But every single situation does have another vehicle that would do better. But in my opinion, no other vehicle can do all those tasks as well.

I found a used BlueOx tow bar on Offer Up. I used the BlueOx base plate from etrailer. And then I have an RVi brake controller in the truck on the floor.

Really happy with the BlueOx stuff and it’s simple to hook and unhook.

BlueOX stuff is good... easy to work like said above..

As for braking, either a brake buddy or air force one braking system for something more reliable/stronger for bigger toads.

My RV came with a Roadmaster brand new tow bar. its rated for 6000 LBS. The truck weighs just that. Dont know if I should trust it or get one with some room incase I need to put something in the bed of the truck one day.

I will check out the brake controller you are talking about.

Thanks

I've towed this thing all around, probably close to 5K miles so far. It tows perfect, and will do about everything you want, drive around tow, putt thru the desert or rock crawl.
