Evidently, the freezer door opened itself at some point in the last 24 hours, and my 1/2 cow from Joel is all warm and drippy.

Short of throwing it in the trash, is there some use for this stuff for animal feed or something? I'm in Long Beach, so not many pig farms around here....If it could be of use for something, I'd rather that happen....

If it only been within the last 24hrs I'd say you'll be ok. I dont cook meat unless it is at room temp.
That's what I'd do as well, no qualms at all. I'd refreeze what you're not planning on cooking in the next day or two. Hell. I've sous vide briskets and such for 24 hrs at 130F or so.

I feel your pain....

We have invested in a Wi-Fi connected temperature tracker. If it goes above a definable temp you get an alarm on your phone. The one we have has two sensors. One on each freezer.

It wasn't terribly expensive but after the second time the wife left it cracked.......

Maybe @wash11 can provide better advice. I’d dig through and find what is still frozen and keep in freezer. Then what is thawed and cook it. What is warm trash or find someone that could use it. 🤷‍♂️ Hell I have eaten what my wife told me to throw out a week earlier. 😁😁😁

Everything was thawed and room temp....no idea how long it was room temp...but evidently long enough for 300+ lbs to go from solid to room temp, which seems like a while.... thus the decision to get rid of it.

Already called @wash11 to line up a replacement order....

BTW....if you haven't tried their bacon or sausage yet.....don't. You'll continue to be happy with the shit from the store.

That’s a lot longer than you’d think.

You could call the animal shelter in El Dorado park and see if they will take it for food.

Always take and deliver to those democrats in the neighborhood after dark. Random spots in the yard should attract a few different friends to stop by.

Just put it in your organic waste bin. You know the one the city requires. ;)

Joel had told me before that freezer burned stuff was good to feed chickens, good protein. Never had meat spoil from heat though. Heck, out here people would use it for hogs...maybe pet lions too?

I had this happen to me a few years ago. Someone (most likely me) kicked the plug out of the wall. Nothing like a pool of blood and rotten meat. I called around to get some ideas on what to do, no one had any good thoughts. I tried draining it, the smell and the crime scene look wasn't great. I guess one of my neighbors was worried I had murdered someone and I got a visit from Long beaches finest to investigate. After they got a good laugh at my expense, they left me with my mess. Then it struck me, I could refreeze it and chip it out and bag it. Well that didn't work, picture me bent over with a hammer and chisel chipping out chunks of blood. that attempt lasted all of 10 minutes. At that point I was at a loss for what to try next. The freezer sat untouched for a week as I was working the problem in my head. Eventfully it struck me, I was worried about the freezer, thinking I wanted to keep it. The freezer wasn't worth the trouble at this point. I wanted the whole mess gone. The next problem was to figure out how to get a freezer full of blood and rotten meat into my truck.

My solution...........

Craigslist ad for a free chest freezer, bring a truck and a fried and it's yours. "Needs some cleaning, works great". I did post some pictures and left it on the curb. To my surprise it was gone in a couple of hours.

Couple of take aways, I'm cheap and the amount of time I spent to try to save a cheap freezer wasn't worth it. The second, I thought I was a hard worker, I realized I must not be, as the guy who picked it up was going to spend a couple days and some serious work to clean that cheap freezer. The real tragedy was the half cow that I had just purchased was ruined, losing that kind of money on something so stupid still hurts my soul.

Good luck

A few years ago my main breaker died at my river pad...possibly weeks before my arrival. I thought I was going to puke 🤮 It was about 11pm, 100 degrees outside...felt like 120 inside. Luckily I was out a day or two before the family. I ratchet strapped the fridge closed, and hauled it outside, opened all the windows, and slept on the boat.

After getting the new breaker, ran fans for a few hours before turning on the AC. The fridge was opened up and hosed out, stuff thrown away. There was no saving that fridge though. Hell, I thought I was going to have to burn the whole place down!

I got lucky....no stank yet.....it's all frozen again, with a big nasty frozen puddle at the bottom, but most of it can be removed and trashed (on thursday....trash day....not before that).

Freezer is saveable I think....if not, the dump is 5 minutes down the road and I've got plenty more junk to fill the rest of the truck to help with the dump fee....no big deal there.

Years ago when I lived in Yuma, aftee dove season and I had a lot in a standup freezer in a converted garage. No ac in this room and come to find out, the freezer was plugged into the wall switch. Somebody turned it off. Weeks later when discovered and I quit puking, it was hauled off to the dump. The smell was ungodly .

Glad i read this. Not glad happened to you tho…..i have a new commercial refrigerator/freezer that I installed when I built the house. So after like 8 months of it working fine ,went to work for few days in Ca.when i come back to find the thing is shut off. Check power at plug ,has power .After removing all the nasty food in freezer and fridge then clean it out as best as Posible, call manufacturer (Samsung) through Best Buy. I had bought the Waazo warranty so would never have to worry right .well apparently no service company’s certified to work on it in havasu or anything close. Wtf. get a service guy on line from factory and he tells me cycle power switch off the back on. Works perfectly. Well father talking to him for a bit he says Samsung puts a sensor in all their fridges if any slight power surge they will shut themselves down and not reset. Would be great if this was explained in installation guide. He tells me “off the record”to put a surge protector plug instead of regular ,seems ok now. Anyway I’m getting one those monitors mentioned in this thread. Thought id share some you all may want to do the same ,save some hassle

In one of the foreclosed homes we used to clean up and rehab was a fridge with freezer on top. The old tenants had left. Most of the fridge was cleaned out. But in the freezer was a "previously frozen" turkey. The plastic cinched bag it was in was swelled up tight. It was a balloon of nastiness, like Rosie O'Donnell in a prom dress. We were all afraid to move it for fear it would explode and cover us with warm rotten turkey juice. As I recall we tipped over the fridge gently, then pushed the turkey into a trash bag, then doubled it and taped it shut. Then put it out for the trash man to take. It was like handling a live bomb!

Having bought a 1/4 cow from Joel and Amy I feel your pain. I haven't had a loss like this but do have a worry of loosing the freezer and it refreezing without my knowledge. Obviously you've got the juice as evidence and found it warm. My worry is it goes warm but refreezes before all this. So.....

I put a cup of water in my freezer. Let it freeze, then put a penny on top of the ice in the cup. Figure if and when the freezer thaws out, the penny will sink to the bottom and the cup of water will refreeze. No penny on top. Kinda my little tattle tale.

My heart broke when I got the message. Pat was surprisingly cool about it. I’d have lost my shit🤷‍♂️.

We recommend this product to insure against this exact scenario (Pat has already purchased and is ready for his replacement beef)

Easy to preset temperature parameters. I can be 300 miles away and will get a notification if Amy’s working in the freezers because of a 15 degree jump.

I monitor all sorts of stuff, just add more pucks to the system.
