Little monkey wants to be a gorilla. He's slimming down, and working out now. My little home gym, cobbled together due to covid, only has about 300lbs worth of plates. Well crap...he's already working out squats with that much. He wants a trap bar for Christmas...and more wheels. Bar is easy...but when did iron pop up to 2$ a pound?

Where's the go to for plates these days? We have mats, so old school, yard bird clinkers are fine. Have one shop up here I haven't checked with, and they do some used commercial equipment. Probably hit them up tomorrow.

...and no, not going to wrap them;)

Covid hit and home gym stuff went through the roof.
Craigslist, offer up, Facebook marketplace.
Maybe ask local gyms if they are looking to sell older stuff. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Get him a harness and have him pull heavy equipment around the yard. Rocky IV training in Russia

I'm seeing $1.50 a pound on the CL resellers. Covid jacked the prices. I nearly sold all my stuff because of that. Basically, get a price in your head that you want to pay and comb CL daily. That's how I got what I wanted. I also hit up a crane mechanic. He had some 45# plates that he used for calibrating things. He was retiring and let me have them.

I just bought another place in NV. Was sold by a widow "as-is" with everything on the property as part of the deal, including a workout station in one of the buildings. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to really look at it yet, but here's a mediocre picture:

Not sure if you're interested in something like this, but I'd let it go cheap just to get it out of my way. I can take a closer look at it when I'm back up there in a couple of weeks.

Thanks! Already have a machine setup though. He's wanting heavier weight. Ours has a legpress, but "only" goes up to 440, and the stack is 220. Machine press is easier, I think, than squat. We have some free weights and plates, and it was good enough for the past few years. With me being a gimp compared to my former self, it wasn't a big deal. He was a foot shorter, and at least 60lbs lighter then.
The big question, will I die trying to keep up?

Damn that's badass! I committed myself a few months ago but I'm still trying to catch up to my dad, it's gonna happen next year. Not sure how he'll feel about that but it's inevitable.

One of my kid's goals is to beat me arm wrestling. I may have a few months at the current rate...unless I start hitting the pile again. Crap!

My nephews are really into this shit since the graduated last year. They have some cool shit. I'll hit them up and see where the are ordering because I know they dont have much $.

You are looking for free weight plates correct?

My dad made our when we were kids. Concrete and steel.. I was always embarrassed when my friends would come over, they all thought it was cool as hell to be lifting odd ball shit but everything weighted exactly to the lb. Dozer track wheels were always a hit.🤦‍♂️

COVID.

The new Repfitness trap bar is bad ass. Check it out.

The best place is still Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. If you want new, wait for Black Friday and look for deal listings on Bodybuilding.com

Mikes Fitness Riverside has decent prices and huge assortment. If you want me to haul anything back to Havasu let me know.

Off topic, but I just got quoted $10/foot for 1.5" DOM .120" wall tubing here in L.A. 🤬
Pre Biden / Covid I was paying $.90 per foot of 1" x 2" 14 gauge steel. I paid as high as $2.25 per foot. Today I paid $1.77

What material of 11 gauge are you buying and from where?

This was a price I was quoted for tubing from Tube Source, Inc. in Santa Fe Springs.

Old friend of mine and his dad used sewer lids as plates. Pretty sure they stole those or bought them from somebody that did, so probably not for you. I know the scrap yards don't sell them because they are not allowed to buy them for obvious reasons.

When I contacted my cities Public Works department to buy one they had a bunch of questions and then wanted a lot of money to have one made. I ended up making one but will not bore you with those details.

Woohoo! "Black Friday" type sales on Amazon, 46$ a plate! Been finding used stuff, but over a 1$ a pound, and looked abused...not Christmas pretty, or matched up. Wanting to find 4-6 plates makes it tough as well. These are cast iron, no fancy rubber types...old school!

My son went off to college and we are no longer using our squat rack and a bunch of Olympic weights so I have been thinking of getting rid of all of it, even have a good 1200# bar not one of the cheap bars that break with heavy weight (all undercover outside). Guessing we have around #500 pounds. The only kicker is would like to sell it all together. Let me know if you’re interested.

He'd love a squat rack, but I don't think I have room. Everything here needs to stay inside...snow gets to be a pain.

I’m sure shipping cost will take care of any discounts. 😉
Unless prime picks up shipping cost.

I think the deals are gonna get better.
Recently scored this sweet cable crossover machine for about a grand.
They’ve been $1500+ for quite some time.

I've got a couple of bad big block cylinder heads laying around... They don't just build muscle, they build character, back problems and hernias 😉

My Pop's first job was unloading enginge blocks from a railroad car, onto dollies, then into the smelter at Gregg Iron in El Monte...I swear, he could have beat my ass until the day he died. Went from that, to roofing. Freaking ox!

My dad is 75, still does a little drywall now and again. I still remember him tossing board around like it was nothing. He grew up with 10 kids, single mom in the housing projects in Carmelitos. I wouldn’t have messed with the ladies in that house.

Pops would have been 80 this December. Oldest of 10, his dad walked out on them. Grandma had the house in Bassett until 84ish. 1 bedroom, one bath...the "addition" off the back was cobbled together. That was before I'd heard the term "dirt floor poor", but that's what it was. People used to struggle, and not take the handouts. Pops dropped out of school in 9th grade to support them. He got his HS diploma when he was 50.

Fuk I miss him🥲

Not bad at all! Think we're going to stay old school, free weights and bars. I was trained "yard bird" style, and was fairly successful...it's just been over a decade. There aren't many things he listens to me about, but this stuff seems to be one of them.
