My wife just texted me a little concerned because she received a text from a number she's never seen before and the only thing in the text was this picture. What is it?

Kinda weird I don't know what it is, but I swear I have seen that exact thing in my adventures in life somewhere.

She said she wasn't going to respond. Just thought it was very strange.

It was a 714 area code number. Isn't that SoCal?

Maybe part of an old electric sewing machine motor assembly? Or some sort of electric motor assembly.

That looks like a capacitor on top of that old school transformer.

714 is an OG Orange County area code.
I still have it for my cell phone, don't wanna give it up since they aren't issuing any new 714 numbers.

Looks like old telecom stuff to me...?

I would hope it's just been sent by someone that typed in a wrong number

You probably have. It looks like a step down transformer with a capacitor start for a VFD on a lathe or mill.
Could also apply to a HVAC system.

Looks like parts out of a old 1960's HVAC combo unit I had on a old building.

I'm thinking it's a step up transformer / power supply for an electrostatic hvac filter

714 here too. They wanted to give my kids the new area code. I talked her into 714 numbers as well.

the diodes on the left side (rectifier), and the big starting cap make me think welder, but the transformer looks like a battery charger with 6 & 12 volt windings.

That's part of an IP spoofing unit commonly used to generate duplicate screenames and circumvent IP bans on popular forum software from the early 2000's.

Nailed it! ;)

Dunno. But it looks like you're gonna need a 7 sided gangly wrench and a westley sprocket to tear it down.

It's a high pressure sodium ballast and starting capacitor for a 400w light fixture

Alum panel contains an AMP gauge opposite the black leads. Transformer is a 6/12 volt.
