What is this part that seems to be running off of the outdrive?

This is the drive, behind a small block Chevy in a 75 Charger. Is the 280 designation the (original) horsepower rating or just a model number?

model of the drive. I don't know where the number comes from but you will typically see 280s behind v8s and 270s (virtually identical) behind 4 cylinders.

fun fact, these outdrives were originally designed by Volvo for Chrysler Marine and were put behind Volvo B20 engines and carried Chrysler badging

You might find this history interesting as it differs just a smidge from yours at least at it's inception. 😁

interesting. I've never seen a pre 70 aquamatic that didn't have chrysler badging on it. looks like there's also a dana-chrysler sterndrive from back in the day as well 🤔
My fishing buddy had a 270 with the 4 cylinder Volvo engine in his early 70's Pacific City Dory Boat, couldn't kill that combo and it worked great to heat up our burritos when we were winter fishing on the back side of Catalina Island. 😁

I had a 280 in my 70's 19' Reinell cuddy, with the 305 pushing it. Finally came time to pull the drive, it was clear from the start it wasn't having any of that.
Spoke to my mechanic, told me after it had seen salt water and since it had never come off previously, he'd probably have to take a running start and yank it out with a fork lift.
I decided to try a less drastic approach first myself. Set a concrete anchor in the floor of my shop. Put some blankets under it to cushion it if it dropped out. Put a HD strap around the drive, attached to a cable with a large and stout turn buckle. Then had a big slide hammer rigged in the middle. I'd take up hard on the turn buckle, then start banging the hammer, few more turns, bang bang and actually it came out fairly gracefully using that approach. At least the transom remained intact. 😂

OK, my 2nd boat, my 17' Formula Jr (Think Donzi 16) with a 260 Eaton Interceptor came with this Eaton outdrive ---- seen one ??
That tube with the holes had a pin through it, if you lifted it, you could use a special pole to roll the outdrive either 90 degrees or 180 degress for trailering. Made it handy to replace the prop, or the shear pin which I snapped more than once jumping waves off of Newport Beach.

Mine's a 19 built with a 175 BlackMax. All the Chargers I have ever seen are jets. Gonna have a 200 on it when I'm done
