As I have said, I don't do the whole SXS thing, of course as was said by others if i ever made the mistake of going for a ride in a speed that may change!

To those in the know would there even be a Pro R or a Maverick R if there was no SPEED?

The idea of Robby and Todd sitting down over a beer and have the balls to jump into the deep end and go up against mainstream manufacturers
and actually get where they are is mind boggling to me.

Would there even be a Speed if there wasn't a RZR.

Would there even be a RZR if there wasn't a Rhino.

Would there even be a Rhino if there wasn't a Funco

Would There even be a Funco if there wasn't a Manx.

Would there..... :)

Guess I am a decade or two behind the Joneses.

I believe the mav r was in development before speed even started.. I’m not sure it would have as aggressive suspension though

Both Mav R & Pro R were at some point of development when Speed was born. It was said by a Can Am engineer that the DCT was in development for almost 8 years from the initial authorization to proceed with its design. When the new Mav R transmission was in development, it was not asigned to any one model of vehicle. It was not until a few years into development of the DCT trans when an expected date for implementation was set. Even then the driveline div had no idea what the vehicle design or final production name would be. They just knew it was to go in a 2021 sport model.

The Pro series for Polaris was said to have been a 5 year processes and that only after a year into it did they start talking about the 2.0L engine possibility.

Then both the Can Am & Polaris vehicles were delayed over a year due to the virus. Actually Can Am delayed the Mav R even longer due to supplier shortages and the struggle to even produce the X3 and other established models.

I do believe changes were probably made to the cars after watching & seeing what Speed was doing, and due to Robbys Arctic Cat and early Speed patents being granted.

One well known desert race team had a Pro R almost a year prior to the release as they were given the car to build out into a race car, then corp decided to hold back the release as they were dealing with shortages and factory shutdowns in Mexico.

I was also told by a friend, whose nephew works for Polaris. That Polaris buys every brand of vehicle that Polaris has a competing model. They test and dissect each car they buy to learn what their competitors are building. Makes you wonder which early model Speed that has been listed for sale did Polaris buy? I’d assume they already got one?

Nostradmus, to the white courtesy phone please. 😜

I mean seriously, who would know?

I personally think that we would NOT have the 70k SxS's you see on the showroom today.

The Speed pushed the industry to seriously step up the (development) pace to improve their products AND seeing what people ARE willing to pay for a car, they felt no need to hold back on pricing.

Speed has been Great for the industry as a whole. Everyone involved will reap the benefits of increased competition. 👍🏼👍🏼

Just my 2 cents.

Out of curious, why would you say that?. I don't think Polaris or Can Am even consider what speed is doing. Shit a Can Am almost won KOH overall.

Be pretty long to type, but basically because on all the models before they were happy with the suspension geometry.. after the speed came out they did that crazy over arms deal to basically get the best suspension geometry possible.. which is more or less identical to speeds but achieving it in a different fashion.

Wouldn't it be fair to say the Honda Odyssey started the SXS trajectory?
My Dad bought me one when I was 11. Some of the best memories. First trips to Glamis. My older Niece is 11 and 8 others younger than her. So I got them a 200.

First in my Crew to get a Rhino. My Chick at the time and her friend didn't like the quads they had. But loved the Rhino. Had a RZR. Now been shopping for another rzr but if I could afford it I would get a Speeed. Just don't have 60k on hand for it. Got to build my garage and addition first. No where to store it.

Technically no.
The first Honda Odyssey was sold in 1977, but it’s a single seat vehicle.

SXS implies two seats next to each other.

Polaris actually built the first SXS as we know it today. Yamaha gets the credit with the Rhino as that’s the vehicle that actually created the recreational user to buy a SXS for sport recreation in the deserts. I believe the farmer kids (flat billers in the Imperial Valley) are actually the ones to take dads farm Rhino to Glamis or Plaster City as a way to one up the lifted golf cart guys.

Here’s a bit of history about the Polaris SXS.

1999 Polaris makes the first Ranger SXS. This is before Yamaha made the Rhino. The story goes that Mitchell Johnson, son of David Johnson (David was one of the three founders of Polaris) who was working at Polaris had a conversation with Edgar Hetteen (Edgar was one of three founders of Polaris) Edgar wanted to make a vehicle so he could ride beside his wife, as you could not do that on a ATV. Edgar & Michell came up with this 6 wheeled vehicle and the first Polaris SXS was born!

Wouldn't a golf cart be the OG SxS?

I remember seeing those out in Glamis way before anything else!
