going thru my trailers suspension, lifting axles, removing rims and tires, etc ive kinda noticed that if i were to get a flat in my middle axle and it drops down, there is absolutely nothing i could do on the side of the road. i dont carry a jack in the car usually with the exception of the one that comes with the truck and its muuuch too tall. do you bring a jack with you when you tow long distance or have you ever though about what you'd use?

Would the drive on type work? You drive the inflated tire up the ramp onto the jack and it holds the tire to be changed in the air. I'll check the mfg. of the one I have tomorrow. Generally used on horse trailers due to excessive weight and movement.

Yes it would... But still not as cool as back jacks. :D. Plus with back jacks they are always on the trailer and you don't have to haul them.

I took a 2X6, cut 1 foot lengths then cut 45 deg angles on both ends and screwed them together to create an 8" wide lift and a wheel chalk all in one.
I have never trusted the parking pall or E-brakes when alone on a steep launch ramp. I have tested it and it holds with no other help. I've also forgotten to take it out and spit out a fair distance when the rear tire caught it.

Daves idea is cooler though.

I take an aluminum jack with me every time and I have a compressor and air tank in my boat. Had a couple flats in my day. The last flat I had took me less than 5 minutes to change. I felt like I was the old man in the Christmas Story movie.

When I trailer boat to Ca from Havasu or up to Powell, I take the following.
- 6 18" long 4x4
- 4 jack stands
- 3 ton floor jack
- small bottle jack
- extra bearings
- grease gun
- 2 3' sections of HD chain
- 3 extra tires
- old set of rain gear
- old blanket

I have taken my boat from CA to WI for a family vacation a few times and basically have whatever is needed to fix anything if needed. Everything fits into 2 medium plastic tubes that go in the back of the truck. Might be over prepared, but being stuck in the middle of BFE is something I like to avoid. Did it once and will never do that again (had to leave boat and drive 120 miles to next town to get parts to fix trailer - it sucked).

6 ton bottle jack and the four ended lug wrench. Invariably the tow vehicle has different sized lug nuts than the tow vehicle. A few blocks of 2x6 to put under the jack if I need more height or stability, or as wheel chocks.

I have had three flats on the trailer over the years. A couple cans of fix a flat, and a small air compressor always on long trips too. I have one that plugs into the lighter, and one of those jump start boxes that has a light, USB chargers, air compressor and jump starter all in one unit. It has come in handy on many occasions.

OK, I'll bite. What's a "Back Jack"?

A worthy investment. basically a swing down post that you back into that will lift your trailer up.

Cant find em anymore.

Always bring a floor jack with me in truck.

Like Dave said.. They were posts that had a large radius on the bottom of them. The posts were attached to the main rails on the trailer near the rear. You would pull a pin and they would fall to the ground, and you put the truck in reverse and the trailer would jump up onto the back jacks and the wheels would be off the ground. When done put the car in drive and the posts rotate again and the trailer falls back to the ground, and then you push them up and put the pins back in them..

Can't find them anymore.. Shame because they were bad ass when they were making them. Extreme actually used to offer them as an option on their trailers.

I kept a high reach floor jack in the back of my Escalade. Since going back to an open bed PU, I just carry it on long trips or where I might be in rough terrain or isolated. I've helped more people out than using it on my own stuff. You're a hero when a lady or guy whose not dressed to crawl on the ground sees what you've got to help out.....Very few vehicles come with decent jacks or tire tools. And most are hidden in numerous places if you do have to use them.

Floor jack just needs a decent surface and somewhere solid on the vehicle/trailer and up it goes. And it doesn't take up enough space to be in the way.

Just did this last weekend. Had a blow out just outside of Indio, on the way back from Parker (5+ year old tires, my fault). I carry a costco aluminum jack and a lug wrench. I swapped it in 6 minutes. My wife couldn't believe it when I got back in the truck and asked if everyone was ready. I need to get spare bearings too. Another thing, I usually wear actual shoes while traveling vs flip flops. Just in case some sort of accident happens. Of course, I forgot my shoes in the trailer when we left. Flip flops suck on the side of the road.

Floor jack from haborfrieght
Snapon 18v impact gun
8-24 impact socket kits 1/2
1/2 ratchets ext etc...1/4&3/8 also
And a torque wrench. Always torque to spec.
Throw the 4 way bar away. Most people will break studs with em or have a wheel off
Modis scanner:skull yep had my light come on scan and scoped the vehicle found water build up in the spark plug tube. Most likely from desert monsoon. Told the wife to go enjoy a coffee (Barstow). Back on the road in an hour...lol

I carry a Pittsburgh Aluminum floor jack from Harbor Freight Tools, a large breaker bar and a deep socket set.

Yep! I have the same, along with some pieces of 2 X 10 and a cordless impact. One of the things most people don't think about are lug nuts for the vehicle spare tire. For example if you have an F-250 or Excursion with custom wheels, the stock lug nuts are completely different and the custom wheel lugs won't work at all.

The custom lugs for my Ex look like this...

And the stock lug nuts look like this.

If you don't carry the stockers with you then you'll be SOL.
